My family always gets mad at me for collecting all these movies, saying how i could use a free movie website and stuff, and i understand that physical copies could slowly start dying down. But i dont care, i still always head over to fye or best buy and get whatever i can find. Ive only started collecting. I still love digital copy, and THANK GOD for blu ray + digital combo packs, i would die without those. So i like digital, but i still need those awesome physical collector's sets.

I prefer physical copy. With this video being almost two years old now. One can clearly see that DIgital is the future. Seeing as how DIgital HD comes out two weeks earlier than the Blu-ray & DVD. Digital HD does Have it perks because it simply is just a click away. I came across this video because I needed some good pros and cons on physical copy vs digital copy due to the fact that the Star Wars saga was just released on Digital. I am contemplating on purchasing this because one of the blu-rays from my 6 film box set is missing and that box set is out of print.

When you watch something on netflix you don't own it not even Netflix owns it. But when you have it in your hand it gives you a sense of ownership. A big downside to physical is that their more expensive. I'll keep on buying physical.

With physical media, many of them come with a code that allows you to get a digital copy. So you get the best of both worlds with many blu-rays. Also, Blu-rays will be HD throughout from the moment it plays. When I play a movie on my phone, it can sometimes take a while for the HD to kick in. And as you mentioned, the special features and blu-ray exclusives. Also, some of the blu-ray packaging is cool (lenticular covers, steelbooks, cover art,...) Of course streaming has it's place, very convenient, portable, and doesn't take up space so I like that too. But if I had to choose which is better I would go with physical media.

I definitely prefer physical better, but I have noticed outside of the youtube community, most people seem to prefer digital copies more. A lot of people don't buy movies at all, they just download them either legally or illegally and put them on their hard drive or stream them. I would save a lot of money doing that, but I am a collector and I like owning physical copies of my movies. Really good topic and video, Brendan!!!

Totally agree. Also, you didn't talk about how the lesser films that nobody talks about might disappear forever on the digital format. Take a movie like, idk, Night Flyer, a pretty obscure vampire film that not that many have heard of. It was released on DVD but is now out of print u can still get the out of print version, might cost some coin but it still exists. Flash forward twenty years from now, no company wants the rights to it because its unknown, the film will be lost forever.

I agree with you whole heartedly! I grew up with VHS too and it was great to go into a store and rent a movie you wanted over and over and over. That was my childhood. I'm still collecting VHS and of course DVD and Bluray. I don't like digital copies. It takes away the experience. It takes away from the fun. Nothing better than to go out hoarding at your local favourite store (Target, Best Buy, ETC) and buy something you want for your collection and add to it. I will collect til I die. ;)

  • @LilannB
    @LilannB 11 ปีที่แล้ว

The main down side to the physical format is storage of a large number of discs. What I like about discs is that you buy the movie once and its yours forever. Also unlike VHS, dvds do not deteriorate. For example I purchased "The Man In The Iron Mask" starring Leonardo DiCaprio on dvd in 1998. I've owned the film for 15 years, it plays the same in 2013 as in 1998 and I own it free and clear.

Good to see you comment on this, been wondering what your stance was and when you were gonna talk about it. I just like owning the movies I really like as a physical copy. Also the quality is better, especially the sound. Most countries don´t have fast enough internet connections to stream real blu-ray quality, but it will definetly happen at some point in the future. Right now several countries however, have really slow internet connections. So I think digital copies will be around for a while.

Luckily I think the idea of a world without physical media is a long time away. When they do start phasing it out I think we'll still have companies out there who cater to people like us. Look at VHS, there are still a select few labels who are putting stuff out on that format.

Definitely I prefer physical copies specially with the special features most videos come with and the special edition packaging. Netflix is a good way to sample films I haven't seen before and saves me money from doing blind buys. As for digital copies, it's a good way to take your movies with you on your tablets specially if you go on road trips and if you like to keep your DVDs and blurays from getting scratched or damaged

I much prefer physical copy media too digital. For many reasons that should be obvious.
First, the quality is much better for both picture and sound. Second, the extra features. I base a lot of my purchasing decisions on whether the title has a commentary track and worthwhile making of/features. Lastly the ability to take the title off the shelf, look over the cover art and find just the movie you are looking for. With streaming sites you have less variety and to find an obscure title you have to know it beforehand then search for it. Their predetermined lists cover only a select group of titles.
Only benefit of digital is convenience and it's not worth it. But it will improve hopefully.

  • @KevinKlineisawesome

For me, I always preferred physical copy of mostly everything that I come across. As a kid I became a movie buff and once I earn the money throughout my junior high and high school years, then I was able to buy the DVDs myself. The only time I would buy a Blu-Ray it's when it's in a combo pack. I have a software that can transfer from DVD to a device that you can think of for a smaller size without taking up a lot of space on your computer. Sure watching movies and TV shows through digital is great and all, but there are some titles that are not available or haven't been released yet. Some people I know would point out that they can watch something on Netflix. What I'm trying to do is protecting my DVDs from getting scratched and dirty so that I don't have to waste a lot of money. It's the same for the hard to find, out of print titles

Ok. Well, I don't think the physical copy should ever leave. I like the digital world, but like you said there are downsides also. I personally think both should stay. The option for, should I get that movie at the video store to own or should I just download it and watch it. I like both and I think both should stay. The key is options. I love physical. But the movie studio's are wanting people to switch to digial. First they took away special features to dvd to push to blu ray, now they are putting more special features on the digital copys. Also blu rays are getting less extra features if you notice. Mark my words in 2 years blu rays will only have the main film, all your bouns features will be digital. Then in, the next 10 years I think only big blockbusters will be put on blu ray. Its sad, I dont want this to happen but the writing is on the wall. But like VHS beofre the physical meida age is coming to an end. The movie stuidos want this. This gives them full control of how long they want you to have your copys. I see people say oh blu rays will never ever stop being made as there is still demand for them. But they said the same thing about VHS and Laserdiscs. Its not about demand as there is still demand for those formats from collecters. Its about maximum profits. They make so much more profit on digital then they do physcial. I dont like digital but unless people stop buying digital copys I dont see how physical will be here in 10 years from now.

Also about the licensing thing, that is where digital purchasing and vudu etc. come in. Once you buy that digital copy it's yours forever. If you use a service like Netflix/Prime that is a whole different ballgame but i actually like Vudu etc. Whenever you buy a blu-ray it with that digital code.

I agree on all your points. As hard as it may be to believe, I think there will always be some for of physical copy because not everyone has the internet (I know it sounds weird).
But, for example, they have a new disc/tv format (4K) coming out that is like 5 times better than blu-ray.
I guess we will have to just see what happens.
In the meantime, thanks for the overview.

You see, with devices like Apple TV or every Xbox One games being available for digital downloads, digital purchase is clearly going to be the future of media distribution. I personally prefer the digital distribution to optical discs, though this way, I'll need to understand how the digital right management works, so that I can play a certain media on a hardware beyond the hardware with which I have that media bought.

I think you are right on both accounts. I think for me it will always be a hybrid between the two. There are movies i love and want my own copy and have all the features. Then there are movies i can watch on netflix etc which i want to watch but i dont think are worth owning or if i do i buy them later on physically.
I think this is exemplified by Netflix putting their homemade tv shows out on dvd. The digital era still respecting the physical era.

What pisses me off is that if you invest in a digital copy most physical copies come with one
