On the last play Jordan decided he was going to guard Grant Hill. He even fought over the screen to stick with his man. He was determined to not let him get a good shot. What a player !
the play at 2:50 vs the Sixers is my fav one. He gets beat badly but somehow he miraculously recovers and stops the drive. Not only does he recover he switches on Chuck for the steal. He defended two people in the same possession something that very few people in the history could do. And not one of them could do as consistently or effectively as MJ.
dude was tenacious as fk. I literally can't believe we try to put anyone on his level. He simply dominated everything everywhere all the time. LJ on ball defense isn't even in the same stratosphere as MJ's. LJ is great at passing lanes, chase downs and weak side help. On ball defense LJ isn't even good. He's gotten better but nowhere close to elite. If Jordan didn't want you scoring you weren't going to score period.
Yeah dude LeBron really shouldn't be brought up with anything mj, NBA needed a new star after kobe it was LeBron now its steph and in the future it'll be someone else LeBron years are over with
🤣 are u srs ? i’ve seen bron do everything mj did in this video to better offensive players and scorers. they are both great defenders and neither is vastly better than the other. tenacious is the word tho to describe mj on defense
Solid proof that MJ is the GOAT. The guy played the whole floor, the whole game, and with the whole of his intensity. He had the killer instinct on both ends of the court.
I hope nba teams start prioritizing defensive based teams more. For example the 2022 Celtics were so good. I think the spurs have the potential to be a defensive powerhouse too
Greatest scorer ever (both in the regular season and playoffs), greatest finisher and clutch shooter ever, quite possibly the greatest on ball permitter defender ever, and a very underrated and overall excellent passer. 6-0 in the finals with 6 finals MVP's. Michael Jordan is quite simply the greatest basketball player ever, and that is no disrespect to Lebron, Kareem, Magic, Wilt, Russell, Bird, Kobe, Hakeem, Duncan, or any of the other all time great legends. MJ was just simply better than all of them.
Those were some great players he was guarding, Bird and Thomas and Magic. You have to admire his determination and man what technique he had. Textbook.
My dude was really slowing down to guard everyone at their paces. His athleticism was on alien and at 6'6 with that wingspan he could virtually guard 3 players at a time in 1 possession, it only became stupid when MJ wanted to guard guys full court and ball hunt all game. 40 was a walk in the park for him
it’s easy when all they do are weak ass crossovers and backing people up. the only reason most of them are good because they are tall. almost none of them can dribble the ball
Pretty obvious why he would be so good at defense. Killer instinct, athleticsm, footspeed and more importantly great footwork, huge wingspan and giant strong hands with good hand eye coordination and very physically strong too. He also has very high basketball IQ and court vision and can anticipate what moves are gonna be made. That's a nightmare to deal with on the court.
No professional team outside of Bill Russel Celtics (they only had to beat like 7 other teams to win though 😒) dominated a team game like Jordan's Bulls. But Jordan haters want to give all the credit to Pip. The year after MJ retired Pip was mediocre at best on a talented Blazers team. Brady is probably the closest winner in the modern era of sports with his 6 titles in 20 years. Jordan won 6 titles in 11 full seasons as a Bull. Combine that with his blend of individual dominance (10 scoring titles in 11 full seasons, 5 MVPs, DPOY) and team success (6 rings in 6 straight seasons in which he played a full season) and his countless highlights of him dominating on both ends of the court and I dont see how hes not the GOAT in people's eyes. He was a drill sergeant on the court and pushed his teammates to be their very best and people say hes not a good leader. He made his teammates mentally tough and you need that to Win. Not gonna say no names but some of the other people that get considered the 'goat' have shown many examples of lacking mental toughness. Great players are great players but if I'm starting a dynasty from scratch and my life depended on them being successful, MJ is my number 1 pick. He never took a game off and wouldn't let anyone else take a game off. I'll take that over a player that wants to be everybody's friend any day. You play to win
Know whats crazy? Mj has a longer wingspan than iguodala.. and iggy could lock down lebron.. and kwahi has the same wingspan of pippen (he also locked down lebron) Wellp so if mj and pippen played lebron... The result would be similar or even better
Red Demon Kawhi when Kawhi was a baby and LeBron was in his athletic prime. Check the #s when they were 1 on 1 against each other. LeBron had the stats of the 8th man off the bench. Kawhi ate him alive. I hate the spurs but that was pathetic on LeBron behalf.
Don't be one of those people who throws out stats without putting any context or looking into anything in depth at all. People like that will say Iguodala got Finals MVP for his defense on Lebron despite Lebron averaging 36/13/9, as if Iguodala was on Lebron for every possession of the entire series. Anyway, let me put a little context and get SLIGHTLY more in depth. In the 2015 Finals, LeBron went 18-54 FG (33.3%) in the series when guarded by Andre Iguodala. You could get more in depth and talk about what happened in post-up situations of Lebron vs Iguodala, Isolations, Pick and rolls, etc., but as you can see from me getting just SLIGHTLY more in depth and in context, getting more in depth of what happened on possessions between the two will make Lebron just look worse and worse.
Because of him my defense improved. But even before him, I took to defense like a duck on water. I was always looking for the steal or preventing them from getting to the hoop. After watching how Jordan defended, I got into people's passing lanes and timing when a person would post up and throw up a shot then I was on my way up to block. I made so many people angry doing that lmao 😂. To me he's the example of perfect offense, perfect defense and he worked HARD on both. The fruits of labor
What plenty of people don’t see is Jordan is the best because he was also the greatest defensive player. Game in and game out, season in and season out Jordan played as hard defensively as he did offensively.
Jordan will never get the full credit he deserves for his defensive dominance. He was the one that guarded the best player most often, not Scottie. “Michael Jordan *always took it to a point that he wanted to guard the best player* even with myself, even if I start talking trash to him he would always tell Scottie Pippen ‘look, I’m taking Gary tonight’,” Payton told First Take. “He would always take the best basketball player..." - Former Defensive Player of the Year Gary Payton and with Harper injured in the middle 3 games of the 1996 Finals, Jordan was the one against whom Payton mainly struggled offensively in that series, after a great first 3 rounds. Isiah, Drexler, KJ, Payton, Stockton, Tim Hardaway, Penny, Rice, Steve Smith, Reggie, Rod Strickland, all struggled much more when guarded by Jordan in Playoffs or Finals series. Players like Joe Dumars 1991 and Terry Porter 1992 had huge playoff averages entering series against the Bulls but got shut down against Jordan. Even in the instances where a perimeter player had better averages against the Bulls, they were mainly lighting up the PGs like Paxson, Vincent, Hodges, Armstrong, Kerr, Harper, or Brown and struggled with Jordan switching on to them. Ricky Pierce had the highest scoring average of any 6th Man in history (23 PPG) in 1990, but got shut down every time Jordan switched on to him in the 1990 Playoffs despite his great series averages. Another good example is Reggie having 22 points on 7/12 FG through 3 quarters in Game 7, but 0 points and 1 shot attempt with Jordan switching on to him in the 4th quarter to win the series. Countless examples of Isiah, Drexler, etc. lighting up the other Bulls only for Jordan to switch on to them and shut it down. The only reason people believe that Pippen guarded the best player is because of Game 2 of the 1991 Finals (and Jordan still primarily guarded Magic for the overall series). and Magic never "lit up" Jordan consistently. Jordan also held Magic to 0-0-0 on 0/2 FG with 2 TOs in the overtime of Game 3 with Pippen fouling out at the end of the 4th quarter. In Game 5 Magic shot in the 30s and Jordan played a hand in all 6 of his turnovers, as well as more that were not credited to Magic himself. In only a few series did Pippen mainly guard the best player - Dominique 1993, Penny 1996, Rice 1998, and Jordan still did the better job when guarding the latter 2 for shorter stretches. Penny had 1 total point on Jordan in the 1996 ECF, and Rice only made 1 FG on Jordan in the whole 1998 ECSF. MJ only guarded Nique briefly in 1993, but still did well, albeit too small a sample to compare to Pippen. As far as versatility goes, Jordan also held his own against Barkley, Laettner, and Vlade Divac for isolated stretches. Though nobody could really guard 1-5 besides Pistons Rodman. Real recognizes real, that's why Gregg Popovich, one of the best defensive and overall coaches in history, compared Leonard's perimeter defense to Jordan. Fitting, as they're the 2 best perimeter defenders of their time (and Jordan the best perimeter defender ever) "He has the ability to do what a Michael Jordan did at both ends. I don’t mean he’s Michael Jordan, but *Michael played both ends of the floor*... You think about the best players in the league, *they’re not two-way players*. He wants to do that, and he stays after it every day." - Popovich comparing Leonard's defensive dominance to Michael Jordan's 1988-1993 and 1996-1998 Bulls always ranked 1 or 2 in least playoff PPG allowed (minimum 10 games played) under Jordan's leadership. Even as a Wizard, Jordan shut down Paul Pierce and Vince Carter, two of the top scorers in the 2001/02 season. and the Wizards had very good defensive numbers prior to Jordan getting injured in his 46th game of the season. Immediately after the injury, their W-L record and defensive numbers plummeted. Jordan's defensive accolades - 9x All-D 1st Team (T-record with Payton, Kobe, Garnett) - 10x Top 8 in DPOY voting (T-record with Duncan, Hakeem, Garnett) - 7x top 5 in DPOY voting (9x Mutombo, 9x Robinson, 8x Hakeem, 7x Rodman) - 3rd place in 1992 DPOY (Robinson, Rodman) - 2nd place in 1993 DPOY (Hakeem) - 1988 DPOY (ahead of Hakeem, Eaton, Cooper, Robertson, Ewing) - 10 Playoffs averaging 2+ steals/game (record) - 3 steals titles Are fully deserved, corroborated by the eye test, defensive matchups, opposing players consistently struggling, and never because of media hype or popularity. Kobe and LeBron would have matched that if that's what it came down to. At the very least, you have to rank Jordan one spot ahead of Pippen as perimeter defenders, since they faced the same opponents and Jordan usually guarded and did the better job against the best player.
Jordan was a unicorn. A guy of tremendous work ethic and physical ability, but he also played utterly phenomenal fundamental basketball. The only time he deviated from the fundamentals is when he took off into the air, and those moments were what made him artistic. But his overall game was just a guy taking basketball fundamentals and utilizing them at peak performance.
That's the difference between MJ and Lebron. When MJ played defense you had to really bring it otherwise he'd be all over you until you let him have the ball, or he just takes it from you anyway then jets down the court for a monster Jam. This is how many plays led to fast breaks for those Chicago Bulls. Harden or none of these shooting guards today wouldn't stand a chance.
He’s known for playing the passing lanes & being a great shot blocker esp for a guard, but his on ball defense is criminally underrated imo. Dude was a menace
Do you remember which game the play against Charles Barkley at 2:50 comes from? I know Jordan had isolated possessions where he had success guarding Barkley in Game 4 of the 1990 ECSF and some possessions in the 1991 ECSF.
Now if you listen to Pippen, it was him doing all of that, what we just saw was an illusion! That was really Pippen in disguise, he borrowed Arya's Master of Faces kit and played as Mike!

the play at 2:50 vs the Sixers is my fav one. He gets beat badly but somehow he miraculously recovers and stops the drive. Not only does he recover he switches on Chuck for the steal. He defended two people in the same possession something that very few people in the history could do. And not one of them could do as consistently or effectively as MJ.
Dude is so fast the offensive team felt threatened and hesitate to shoot thinking MJ would jump and slap that ball away from them lol.
Fast af
Scottie Pippen has a say on that
@@mozdaboz He's not as fast/quick as MJ.
@@andgar923 he may not but MJ is not as long as Scottie and just as I'm trying to say he's just as effective and consistent as a defender...
dude was tenacious as fk.
Capitalhill27 damn right
Stop being up lebrons name. He obviously is nowhere near Jordan. He doesn't deserve to be brought up.
@@terrogz2159 lol Kuzma had to push Lebron just to play defense. Tf outta here with those lies
The GOAT of Jordan videos is back!
He had such great anticipation, quickness, and leaping ability. And he really worked at playing defense.
Unlike lebum
Solid proof that MJ is the GOAT. The guy played the whole floor, the whole game, and with the whole of his intensity. He had the killer instinct on both ends of the court.
No. It's just solid proof you are glazing.
1:49 🤣He didnt even let this man take a step 🔒
Michael Jordan is the greatest defender of all time
Defense wins championships 😌
Say it loud for the young casuals who don't know the defense lol

MJ was just simply better than all of them.
his positioning and lateral mobility were amazing
Thanks for sharing Hanamichi's classic RARE videos. Much appreciated. I would love to see more of MJ's rare plays. Hope you can upload more?
The GOAT and the greatest two-way player ever
Those were some great players he was guarding, Bird and Thomas and Magic. You have to admire his determination and man what technique he had. Textbook.
Jordan's last shot of his Bulls career came from his defense...let that sink in.
MJ was like Deion Sanders on defense..can’t run a play on his side or he gone clip you
Better than all the dunks. He hardly allowed his man a dribble. When they do dribble they have to do it behind them.
2:47..he was actually beat at first.. Look how he made him change directions and look at that recovery speed.. My God!
My dude was really slowing down to guard everyone at their paces. His athleticism was on alien and at 6'6 with that wingspan he could virtually guard 3 players at a time in 1 possession, it only became stupid when MJ wanted to guard guys full court and ball hunt all game. 40 was a walk in the park for him
I thought it wasn’t real when I received the notification
Thank you for still remembering me.
Same here!
This is one of the responsibilities of the GOAT.
All the years jordan won scoring title all of those years it should have been mvp's .
This is kawhi Leonard on steroids
this man has been making michael jordan videos for years this dude is elite
that switch to chuck was crazy
It's crazy how well he stays in front of the ball handler. His reflexes and lateral movements are unparalleled.
it’s easy when all they do are weak ass crossovers and backing people up. the only reason most of them are good because they are tall. almost none of them can dribble the ball
@udYi Q “virgin” i’m typing this while clapping some cheeks😭
@OIP ! i was dawg😭
@OIP ! it’s okay if you don’t get pussy just wait
Gilbert Arenas needs to see that grant hill stop. Quickness and strength holds true in any era.
I love Jordan but he retired 3 times lmao. That is an example of "lacking mental toughness", not to mention physical toughness. Be real bro.
This is simply beautiful basketball
Rasheed Wallace should take a look at these clips.
Defense leads 2 offense...MJ Greatest ever!!!
he was long and as quick as lighting and phenomenal timing. Defensive nightmare

Know whats crazy? Mj has a longer wingspan than iguodala.. and iggy could lock down lebron.. and kwahi has the same wingspan of pippen (he also locked down lebron)
Wellp so if mj and pippen played lebron... The result would be similar or even better
Lalambz no one has locked down LeBron.
Red Demon Bruce Bowen definitely locked down LeBron in the 07 finals.
Wtf is your definition of locked down ? The 28.2 / 8/ 4 on 57% shooting he avg on kawhi or the 35/13/8 on 40% shooting he avg on Iggy 😂😂😂 foh
The one and only goats Michael Jeffrey Jordan
Now days its called a blocking foul smh , this is true defense by the Goat ‼️
My buddy said MJ was a great offensive player but that his defense wasn't good. I asked him what NBA games he was watching
Hanamichi for the win, YES!!
What plenty of people don’t see is Jordan is the best because he was also the greatest defensive player. Game in and game out, season in and season out Jordan played as hard defensively as he did offensively.
Facts the GOAT is literally the best at everything he’s flawless elite lockdown defense and otherworldly unmatched offense
This was real basketball with real basketball skills. Nowadays players get fatigue because of a physical series 😂
I wish nba still allow players to play like this today
Observe how well he defends without hand checking even though it was allowed for a majority of his career
you’ve got jordan, pippen and rodman.. my god the defense is suffocating..
Makes you wonder who actually got 10 games out of them in the 96 season..🤔
Absolutely
And Ron Harper! That was the best perimeter defensive team ever by a mile.
“He would always take the best basketball player..."
- Former Defensive Player of the Year Gary Payton
and with Harper injured in the middle 3 games of the 1996 Finals, Jordan was the one against whom Payton mainly struggled offensively in that series, after a great first 3 rounds.
Fitting, as they're the 2 best perimeter defenders of their time (and Jordan the best perimeter defender ever)
"He has the ability to do what a Michael Jordan did at both ends. I don’t mean he’s Michael Jordan, but *Michael played both ends of the floor*...
You think about the best players in the league, *they’re not two-way players*. He wants to do that, and he stays after it every day."
- Popovich comparing Leonard's defensive dominance to Michael Jordan's
1988-1993 and 1996-1998 Bulls always ranked 1 or 2 in least playoff PPG allowed (minimum 10 games played) under Jordan's leadership.
Jordan's defensive accolades
- 9x All-D 1st Team (T-record with Payton, Kobe, Garnett)
- 10x Top 8 in DPOY voting (T-record with Duncan, Hakeem, Garnett)
- 7x top 5 in DPOY voting (9x Mutombo, 9x Robinson, 8x Hakeem, 7x Rodman)
- 3rd place in 1992 DPOY (Robinson, Rodman)
- 2nd place in 1993 DPOY (Hakeem)
- 1988 DPOY (ahead of Hakeem, Eaton, Cooper, Robertson, Ewing)
- 10 Playoffs averaging 2+ steals/game (record)
- 3 steals titles
Are fully deserved, corroborated by the eye test, defensive matchups, opposing players consistently struggling, and never because of media hype or popularity. Kobe and LeBron would have matched that if that's what it came down to.
At the very least, you have to rank Jordan one spot ahead of Pippen as perimeter defenders, since they faced the same opponents and Jordan usually guarded and did the better job against the best player.
This is the reason why I wouldn’t put anyone ahead MJ in the all time list
Just spectacular defense.
EXCELLENT DEFENDER !!!!
Damn he is a menace on both ends😂
I mean look at the danm quickness man. Mans not even noticing that he no longer got the ball for a split second
3:50 Is that Doc Rivers on the commentary? Literally the clearest I've ever heard his voice sound.
Michael Jordan's defense is so underrated
Welcome Back
LeBron James never played def like this.
He’s known for playing the passing lanes & being a great shot blocker esp for a guard, but his on ball defense is criminally underrated imo. Dude was a menace
Brooo you were able to be so physicall back then. Would be interesting to see how he would play defense now.

Are you going to upload again?
Do you remember which game the play against Charles Barkley at 2:50 comes from? I know Jordan had isolated possessions where he had success guarding Barkley in Game 4 of the 1990 ECSF and some possessions in the 1991 ECSF.
It's November 2, 1990.
Now if you listen to Pippen, it was him doing all of that, what we just saw was an illusion! That was really Pippen in disguise, he borrowed Arya's Master of Faces kit and played as Mike!
