And while the water is extremely deep where such tunnels had been proposed, such as from Ireland to England (500+ ft, well a bored tunnel in Norway extends 940 ft below sea level. So a tunnel from Ireland to England is achievable.
Hi, thanks for your question. That's correct, Main Beam (aka Open Type) machines are in most cases not used with a tunnel lining. We have provided Main Beam TBMs where invert segments are placed behind the machine, or a concrete floor is poured behind the machine. We have also used steel plate liners with our Main Beams.
