A normal dad would be happy for his son when he gets a girlfriend. But he’s so mean to Gabriella the only time they interact just because he’s mad at Troy. She didn’t do anything don’t yell at her

I feel like the worst part about this kind of manipulative person is that he genuinely thinks he's doing what's best for his kid, because he's convinced himself that his perfect idea of basketballer Troy following in his daddy's footsteps is the right thing for Troy. When he gives Troy a hard time about theater, he sees it as "tough love", helping to keep Troy "on the right track". He genuinely cannot see what he's doing wrong, and based on the end of the series, probably never will. He never apologized to Troy for trying to force a specific future onto him, he just hugged him after he realized he wasn't going to get his way. No doubt the minute Troy has problems in college, or he and Gabriella have issues, he'd slam Troy in the face with "I told you so".

When i was a kid i loved sharpay, but unfortunately i was peer pressured to hate her so i kept telling everyone i liked gabriella instead (i still like her but shes not my favorite) so i was really happy that there are people that like her as much as i do. She's not perfect i dont like how she bullies her brother and the others, but for some reason i cant hate her 😅❤. She rekindled my love for pink and "girly" outfits (i was so emo back then 😅) I think what really sealed the deal for her as my favorite was when i watched film theory's take on high school Musical.

It’s actually confirmed Coach Bolton had Troy when he was 18, he was a teen dad.
Once you get older you realize he wasn’t all that much in the wrong, he didn’t want Troy to go through the same thing he did, and to not make the same mistakes.

I don't think you'll know who this is, but to me, Bart Johnson, the man who played Mr. Bolton, resembles Brian Cant.
Brian Cant was a British children's television host who hosted a television series "Play School" from 1964-1985 alongside an entire cast of other hosts. He was also the main host for the spin off "Play Away" from 1971-1985.
He died in 2017, but if you look him up, you can sort of see a resemblance between him and Johnson. It's really strange.
    Also, great video.

I think "villain" is probably a bridge too far. Coach Bolton is what I'd call a "passive antagonist:" not the main problem by any means, but still willing to throw gasoline on the fire.
HSM is (obviously) a coming-of-age story, where the driving conflict is the characters figuring out what they want out of life. Bolton's role in this regard is that of a force trying to pull Troy in one specific direction, not noticing or caring what else might be going on in the rest of the story, i.e. the life Troy is living when outside his father's presence. But even then, I'd say he isn't malicious about it, just severely tunnel-visioned; those scenes where Troy talks back and Bolton stays silent, I interpret that as him having a mini "My God, what have I done?" moment, realizing he'd pushed Troy too hard and trying to come to terms with it.
I have no doubt Bolton has his own baggage and hangups that he's, by no small measure, exerting onto his son. But he's not really a bad guy for it, just someone who needs to dial it back a notch or three.

He never seemed bad to me compared to lots of high school coaches lol he was tame compared to coaches who were also dads to my teammates. Sports are intense esp for ppl who’ve started young. Coaches/parents forget that all the time unfortunately. (It’s still wrong obviously, and very damaging)

Most of the cast are a bunch of teenagers who as you said are impressionable, and aren't fully emotionally developed yet, overly concerned with cliques and finding identity in role playing rather than in themselves. Of course the villain comes down to the most developed adult character/s. Even the theater teacher plays a role as an antagonist when she makes it difficult for Troy and Gabriella to audition. Sharpay's not nice, but she is also just fighting to remain relevant in the cursed system.

Everyone around Troy was quite manipulative to him. His dad and his team put this massive pressure on him to be what they wanted him to be, disregarding his feelings and needs for their own. It baffles me that people see Troy as the villain and Sharpay as this misunderstood character when she was just as manipulative as everyone else. She only cared about what she wanted, she was just more brazen about it.

I agree with you, troy's dad really the villain here, but he's kinda realistically right....
scholarship & nba money are amazing, if troy get's to the nba they'll set for life
their lack of communication to see both sides (bball & theater) & trying to compromise are nonexistent
that's why troy compromise going to berkley to pursue both
troy & his dad only speak on practice court are just a guy thing, maybe some kinda safe space for both to speak out their feelings, lot of athlete are more emotional on court instead of off court
troy's dad being hyper all the time are typical athlete behavior that they have to be constantly on edge for the game but they tend to don't know how to turn it off at home to the point in some case domestic violence happen
