If you want more info about CRPGs, check out the CRPG addict. He's playing every CRPG in release order and writing about the play experience in his blog.
I also picked this up after enjoying the JRPG bitmap book so much. It's absolutely fantastic - the cover just says it all, so much love for the genre in that alone. Frankly I'd love to see you dive into some CRPGs on the channel. I really hate how as time has gone on this gulf has grown between the CRPG and JRPG community (potentially understandable as the genres have grown apart) when it used to just be a big lovely mess of complex stat driven games. Is there really all that much difference between a game like Mass Effect and Vagrant Story? or Xcom and Final Fantasy Tactics? As for where to start - I'd recommend KOTOR, Oblivion or Planescape Torment. All were huge moments in the genre's history that essentially broke new ground - Kotor brought the formula to consoles, Oblivion brought the big budget production and Planescape elevated the writing. Anyway - I'm sure you'll enjoy the book as much as I do! It's a great reference!
Excellent! I like this style for the unboxing. Allows you to be more free by switching camera angles and has a natural flow. I enjoy the JRPG book so much! It's been a great resource and something to read during down time at night. I think I will pick this up in the new year since the Christmas budget is already taken up.
Couldn't help but come running to watch your unboxing, specially because the author is Brazilian like myself! Cheers from Brazil Super Derek! Have a nice day a love your videos :D
I started my journey into RPGs by playing gen 1 Pokemon back in elementary school, but at the time I had no idea it was an actual genre of games that was based on turn-based combat, stats, items, etc. I'd later play Diablo 1 and then Chrono Trigger on an emulator (we never had a SNES in the house) which was when I realized there was a whole genre out there with an unprecedented amount of variety! What made my interest in the genre truly take off, though, might've been the quintessential CRPGs Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. I played those so much despite never having finished (I was young and unfocused but just loved creating these characters and messing with the class system, gear, etc). I really need to revisit them and finish them this time... Lately I've circled back to mostly gravitating towards JRPGs, though, but still absolutely love CRPGs.
While I have vastly less familiarity with CRPGs compared to Japanese ones, it still makes me really happy to see all parts of RPG history getting this gorgeous, full treatment
Ha! Literally got both these books recently myself. I bought the Jrpg one and my mate bought me the crpg one for my birthday along with dark souls books. Awesome dude :D
Man, these books look great. I was going to get the one for JRPGs and the CRPG one is interesting just because it''s a blindspot of mine. But then I remembered that I have limited shelf space in this cramped apartment of mine.
I ordered mine a bit over a month ago, and it finally shipped 2 days ago, so it should be here soon! I first read the CRPG book as a pdf file, but then I bought the JRPG book and I know the quality of this will be amazing.
I just ordered the Super Famicom visual compendium and the Atari 2600 visual compendium from Bitmap Books just yesterday. I already own the NES/Famicom visual compendium from them!
Looking forward to those RPG videos. :) Change from paper to PC happened before my time or just right around I was born so I don't know much about that era. Btw Final Fantasy Union YT channel is making unofficial guide/book to Final Fantasy right now, The Legacy of the Crystal.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is the best CRPG I've ever played and one of my favorite games of all time. The amount of customization, the builds you can create, and the world that Obsidian created is nothing short of fantastic
Holy crap those books look absolutely beautiful! Also, if you want to start delving into CRPGs, theirs two entry points imo. Just like how jrpgs have their og 3 (dragon quest, final fantasy and phantasy star) crpgs also have their big og 3 series as well; Ultima, Wizardry, and Might and Magic. Theres also the crpg renaissance in the late 90s which started with fallout and includes stuff like Balders gate, Planescape Torment, arcanum, gothic, vampire the masquerade, kickass stuff like that. Fair warning if you want to jump head first into the classic stuff though. They can be grueling and obtuse, ao much so they make Dragon Quest 2 look like a self help guide.
I've been reading Game Wizards: The Epic Battle for Dungeons & Dragons It's a history of TSR, Arneson, and Gygax. It's only business focused. There is U.S. map art & financial earnings that look like d&d rounds\maps. It's a real page turner if you have even a slight interest in the history of TTRPGs, it covers pre TSR like Avalon hill, and other stuff but only how it relates to leading up to TSR, early gencon stuff, Hollywood, board games, etc 386 page count
I highly recommend Knights of The Old Republic 1&2 if you want to get the feel of CRPGs, but you are used to using a controller. Being a Star Wars fan is not required, but does help. The stories are 100% self contained, and do not require knowledge of the movies other than Jedi = good, Sith = Bad
@@SuperDerek I'm only a casual fan. I like the original 3 films, besides that have no interest. They are great games regardless if you are a Star Wars fan. Being a big fan probably makes the lore better, but the story is all self contained
I was concerned when I first seen the package. I really need to get my hands on these books Ehem…. I mean tomes The camera is set up fine, personally, I’m a fan of the table. But then again, these are your videos
The delivery service seems to be incredibly bad for those books in every country. My delivery person left my package in the rain despite me being home. The book didn´t get any water damage thankfully, but looking at the state the package was in made me age ten years.

Chet was also a contributor to this CRPG Book. His blog is fantastic and I've discovered so many games on it.
He'll make it to around 1998 before father time approaches
Excited to see these upcoming videos!

If the shipping cost wasn't so high for India, I would have bought one in heartbeat
I can't thank you enough for the JRPG book because I was able to get my own. I love it so much.

That background music is so funky.
I've never heard anybody say "Relaxing the spine" before, but it would make a great band name.

I wish you could get a commission but I'm now on the list for the JRPG guide. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
I know this is an older video, but I just ordered the CRPG Book, the JRPG Book and the Art of Point and Clicks. I can barely contain my excitement!! 😁

Yeah that's totally understandable. I'm pretty fortunate to have an entire room in my house to dedicate to RPGs and production shenanigans. :)

I've had that one on my Amazon Wishlist for a quite a while!

About time 😊👌I also own the jpg and crpg ones. They are awesome! Enjoy
When you avoid unboxing videos like the plague but then realise it's a Super Derek video 🤔👌🏼

Love the vibe of this video

I’ve been eyeing their art of point and click adventure book. Now i have two others to look at too =D.
A great book (Both) to smack your friend head, figuratively and literally, who said RPG is uninteresting.
NOOO!! the guide to JRPGS book is on back order!!
Ah man thats so cool im gonna have to start collecting some stuff that isn't just games
man I love bit map books, I've gotten their JRPG, Neogeo and Meal slug books the past few weeks, all such top notch quality!
What's the name of the metal slug & NeoGeo book? I have a lot of interest in those. I've been looking for a good metal slug model kit to build & paint
I've been reading Game Wizards: The Epic Battle for Dungeons & Dragons

I love these guys books
Do you have an affiliated link to buy the book?! I would love to support you while buying a great book :D
Nope, no affiliate links for me, appreciate the thought though! :)
i try buy jrpg for 6months now -.- all time out of stock, and sold out on new stock in moment ;D

@@EriesAston yikes, it’s nice to hear your package wasn’t damaged either. But it looks like they took some precautions with this in mind
Oh, another book we can't get here in Mexico unless we sell a kidney for shipping. :(
friends do not let friends upload unboxing videos.
nice
Lighting was dark on camera 2 otherwise great video
Thanks dude! I'm wrangling in my new camera's settings so by the next video things should be better than ever before. :)
Need more lighting, its too dark I think...
