Hey Destin, put a light source inside the laminar flow, it will act just like a fiber optic cable, the light will only escape when the flow becomes turbulent.
What? Imagine you’re stirring a pot of water and putting a laser just beneath the surface pointing down. I don’t think the red dot on the bottom of the pot will move. Light passing through turbulent flow, but unless it gets refracted by the surface of the water the dot will stay in place.
You may not have gotten laminar flow in your first attempts, but you DID show exactly why you never take an object (such as a knife) out its wound cavity! When you put the pencil and the rod back in the amount of water coming out was instantly much less than leaving the hole empty and why you need to let the hospital take the things out! Two learning opportunities in one video!
Not only is laminar flow awesome, but it's also an integral element of the human physiology. Normal blood flow is laminar. Turbulence of flow can result in vascular disease. Great video!
Destin you forgot the bloodstream, which is always laminar in our arterial vessels, and any damage to the endothelium, like say atherosclerotic plaque, creates a turbulent flow and it causes further damage to the arterial wall. Blood is pretty viscous liquid, and any disturbance in its flow causes all the blood particles to collide with each other at a greater rate and that causes thrombosis. So, keep it laminar, keep it healthy!
I've always been a bit dubious on that claim, since they use Reynolds number criteria on a pulsating suspension in elastic walls, where they shouldn't really apply.. Normal bloodflow is pretty stable and it's clear that problems arise when it get's disturbed too much, but characterising it as "laminar" is getting challenged quite often, as it probably isn't that in the classical sense of the term.

You should go to a manufacturer of fountains that use laminar flow. I'm sure they would be glad to show you the development work they put in to designing their laminar fountains. Fire departments also put stream straighteners on their large master streams (usually mounted on the top of the fire engine) to smooth the flow of water. This not only keeps the stream from bending sideways, it will flow farther since it's not breaking up with turbulence.
Development process: listen to Destin talk about "all the variables" for 10 minutes, and then they just fill a tube with lots of little straws to make the flow more laminar, and then try a bunch of random flow rates until it looks good.
MikeBramm this reminds be of something related! The nozzles are actually designed to break laminar flow because that type of water is less effective for putting out fires.
This is a really good point, as a laminar velocity profile within a tube does not necessarily translate into being a nice "laminar flow" on the outside without some precise manufacturing of the opening. My dynamics professor gave us a whole 20 minute spiel about how he thought the Detroit Airport fountain was made, and when he talked to the company who made it, they more or less confirmed that he had the right idea.
I was about to make a similar comment, I felt as if I had water in my ears. It was a weird experience, I almost actually went to tilt my head sideways and try to get the imaginary water out lmfao.

Thanks for not only bringing us along your own journey and teach us, but also showing that even after all these years on Earth and making videos for us, you STILL have that "child like" excitement for science, which really should just be "excitement" for science. We adults could use a little more of those moments in our lives, so thank you for sharing one of yours with us.
Ditto that one! I love that I still have that ability, and I do my best to spread it...kinda like the plague. :) Make more people unashamed to exhibit joy and wonder!!
Agree. Probably raised in the South or a military brat. I was both, and when I moved to CA in 6th grade and called my teacher Ma' am, she thought that I was being a smart alec. She actually told my Mom that. The problem was that the kids would laugh when I said "Yes Ma'am" and she didn't realize that they were laughing at me.
Bro ever since I worked at a restaurant and played with the non-aerated faucet of the sink, I couldn't stop seeing how cool and almost perfectly still the laminar flow was. It pushed me to learn more about it.

Go sailing. The sail has streamers on it to assist the skipper in trimming the sails. Ideal trim will give laminar flow on both sides of the sail. It's easy to see and feel the difference.
Well, the streamers tell you if the flow is attached or separated. If the flow is separated, there is a small region close to the sail where the flow is going backwards and that is not good for performance: the surface where the flow is separated do not contribute to the overall lift (for a wing). Streamers help you get the highest angle of attack that do not lead to flow separation. Furthermore, laminar flow is more likely to become separated (but yields a lowest friction frag), while turbulent flow is more resistant to separation (but yields a higher friction drag)==> when you increase the angle of attack, turbulent flow (boundary-layer) is wanted to prevent separation, while at lower angles of attack, you want a non-separated laminar flow with a lower friction drag. Hope I made an interesting point :)
Hey Destin. I really hope you read this comment. Going through a divorce. Had to move into a motel recently. So feeling down as I have ever been. Got off work went to the bathroom sink and up to half power it has perfect laminar. For some reason this has always peeked my intrest. I've seen these videos many times but made me watch again. "Weve all stabbed pencils in our pools just for that laminar flow experience, but once youre done, what are you gonna do about that hole? Introducing flex tape, the ultimate post-laminar-flow-experiment cleanup tool!"
Hello, Destin! I love laminar flow too. The thing is, that it is absolutely vital for our body, too! If our blood starts flowing turbulently in our veins (it happens in some pathological situations, the most common could be atheroma), it has the tendency to clot, therefore endanger our organs with thrombosis or embolism. As a last year medical student I cannot stress it enough - laminar flow is love, laminar flow is LIFE, literally!
Also surprised he didn't mention Reynolds number below 1000 is laminar. 1000-2000 is transition. Greater than 2000 is turbulent. If you like this, there is a really easy to observe phenomenon called hydraulic jump which involves laminar flow. Turn on a your kitchen tap so the water lands on a flat area away from the plug hole. Watch the water spread out in a flat ring then rise in level suddenly. THAT IS A HYDRAULIC JUMP AND IS THE PLACE YOU SEE LAMINAR FLOW EVERY DAY. The water in the lower region is laminar. The ridge is the transition region. Beyond that is turbulent.
0:51 Hi, Phil Swift here with Flex Tape! The super-strong waterproof tape! That can instantly patch, bond, seal, and repair! Flex tape is no ordinary tape; its triple thick adhesive virtually welds itself to the surface, instantly stopping the toughest leaks. Leaky pipes can cause major damage, but Flex Tape grips on tight and bonds instantly! Plus, Flex Tape's powerful adhesive is so strong, it even works underwater! Now you can repair leaks in pools and spas in water without draining them! Flex Tape is perfect for marine, campers and RVs! Flex Tape is super strong, and once it's on, it holds on tight! And for emergency auto repair, Flex Tape keeps its grip, even in the toughest conditions! Big storms can cause big damage, but Flex Tape comes super wide, so you can easily patch large holes. To show the power of Flex Tape, I sawed this boat in half! And repaired it with only Flex Tape! Not only does Flex Tape's powerful adhesive hold the boat together, but it creates a super strong water tight seal, so the inside is completly dry! Yee-doggy! Just cut, peel, stick and seal! Imagine everything you can do with the power of Flex Tape!
I cannot overstate how excited I was when a new mall was built in our area that had a _laminar flow_ fountain. And then, one day, some tedious bean counter got together with an architect to make the mall larger (i.e. squash in more sellers into the middle of the walk way, not just the shops on the perimeter) and it was gone. My beautiful, clever, fascinating laminar flow fountain was gone. I just about cried. The children would try to catch them, run around between them, and generally have fun.

Hope I made an interesting point :)
nice, someone is wealthy
I knew this trick when sailing my dad's dinghy but never realised the science behind it. Thanks.
if you have laminar flow sailing then youre losing a lot of speed and wind and power

Taylors number explains why we often have problems with aim. The best way to wash your car, hold the hose to the surface and the impinging jet/circular laminar flow uses the least water with quickest removal of surfactant.
Pack it up boys this guy won!
Laminar flow would be the ideal situation as it forms a steady and organised stream. I think you meant to say turbulent instead of laminar.
I think this is the most relevant example to most males - we see pee physics in action all the time
Was waiting for this to turn into a flex seal ad
*I saw this laminar flow in half!!*
What I appreciate at the start of the video was that it wasn't pre rehearsed or staged. It was improv and you rolled with it well
Surprised that you didn't touch on how water with laminar flow acts like fiber-optics when you add light. Very cool.
you just blew my mind i didnt think of that one.

I would take my then pre-school aged daughter up there and prattle on to her about how amazing it was and how it worked and all the blah, blah, blah. And then, one day, some tedious bean counter got together with an architect to make the mall larger (i.e. squash in more sellers into the middle of the walk way, not just the shops on the perimeter) and it was gone. My beautiful, clever, fascinating laminar flow fountain was gone. I just about cried. I remember seeing a laminar flow fountain on TV a few years back. The nozzles were recessed and it was open for people to walk through the fountain area. The nozzles were controlled by computer, and would make short bursts which would arc thru the air and land without splashing. Sometimes long streams of water, sometimes short bits about an inch long. The children would try to catch them, run around between them, and generally have fun.
