From a utility guy its great to see how much care and attention you put into finding the lines you were crossing and exposing them without any damage. Another great job!
Thank you very much Cableguy. We appreciate you guys. I think these marks were off because the ground was frozen when they did them. Thank God it all worked out. Have a good evening, Tom
Wow that sure would have been frustrating with all those lines being mismarked . Really like how you explain each step of your job . Thanks for a great video and see you next time.
That is a big job and you two make it look so easy. I can't wait for Part 4. I can't believe the town dragged their heels on this and did not complete this sooner. And those mark out guys are a joke.
Wonderful holiday gift three that's right three videos to watch on fixing water build up in the yard. I want to say thank you so very much for teaching how the problem can be solved especially since my mom's yard is starting to have a similiar problem. Thank you for making your video such a teaching tool so we are not like babies learning Greek. Thanks from the Richardson Family ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉 M
Thank you for a spectacular compliment Rosalyn, I hope you like them. This was a nice project. Hopefully we can finish it soon when the weather cooperates. Thanks again, Tom
Great job with the locate and the air ! - I can say from experience in my area that 99% of the locate people are just hourly subcontractors looking to check off an address as fast as they can. Thr fiber locators for AT&T and Comcast are generally right on point, but the generic location people are hit or miss. And like you, we video or photo every dig that is near any utilities. The second guy and the third guy you had come out sound like pros who actually care. the first guy....not so much. And FWIW -- That is a spectacularly beautiful ditch. Another great job y'all
Thank you Dirtworx. You are right on the money. I was so bummed when I hit that phone line. We did everything we could right down to trenching with compressed air and we still damaged a line. I’m thinking, now I have to fight to prove it wasn’t marked. It’s pretty crazy and now there are all these old unused phone and cable lines we have to deal with because everyone is going to fiber. I’m sure you have the same issues. Thank God it turned out ok. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Tom
Those utility marking guys seem like cowboys. How can it be so difficult to find cables - it's literally their job to find and mark them out. They should work for the City as they both seem as hopeless as each other. Can't want to see Part 4. Great work!
Wow! That is a Big job! You Guys are Killing it! Gotta Love that Marking Guy, They tell you to call them and he is all Mad that you did! Lol! Some people are just never happy. Cant wait to see it completed. Dawn is doing great with Kubota as well. Maybe she can be in next years Calendar!
Thank you very much John. Like you said, the markout guy was mad and took it personally that we questioned his work. We're just trying to do the work and not loose money to utility repairs. So far, it all worked out. Thank you for noticing Dawn's improvement. She got a bunch of seat time on this job. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your weekend, Tom
Very interesting again, my dears! I can hardly wait for the last part of the series... All the best for the new year, see you soon... Best wishes from cold Germany, Oliver
Hello from NJ Oliver. We always look forward to hearing from you. I hope you are doing well and staying warm. We are ready to finish this project, but we are waiting for the ground to thaw. Hopefully the soil will workable soon. Thanks again and Happy New Year, Tom
Thank you very much Lee. We’re waiting for the weather to cooperate. The next job is a dry well and we’re looking forward to moving on. have a great weekend, Tom
Thank you David. I hope you are enjoying some nice relaxing down time, before you have to get ready for next season. Thanks again and have a great weekend, Tom
Nice work using that Shop-Vac to vacuum the dirt I ran into the same problem use the smallest pressure washer and vacuum up the slurry it will get messy but dumped it into buckets you'll collect most of the dirt... or if you're getting serious use the 55 gallon bucket vac head
Thank you for your insights, compliment and great advise Rob. We are looking into the 55 gal bucket vac head right now. Thank you again and have a great weekend, Tom
Another great video! Love the detail and detailed explanation of what you’re doing and when. That air tool seems to be a great investment especially if you don’t want to have accidents and having to paying out for repairs!!? You have to just shrug off those utility guys that have attitude. Someone will see this and explain to him why he’s there!?! Take care Tye Landscaping and Happy New Year!!! (From Raleigh, NC)
Thank you very much Jim and hello from frigid NJ. Although it looks like it's just as cold down by you. Thank you for another outstanding comment. The air spade worked great. We are very happy with it. I also don't understand the one utility guy. We're trying to work without breaking lines and doing damage. He took it personally that we were questioning his work. Maybe he was just having a bad day - lol. Thanks again and Happy New Year, Tom
@ yessir cold here as well. We had a little measurable snow this week that we haven’t seen in 4-5 yrs. Lol. Yes, “Air spade”! Yes, sometimes employees make it seem that you are bothering them…….you work hard and try to follow state and local laws to avoid issues and these services are put in place to help with that. You and I pay for these services as taxpayers…..:
@jimbeck820 we’ve only had a couple dustings of snow. I haven’t had to put the plow on yet. You are 100% right Jim. Thanks again for your insights, Tom
Hi Matthew, That's what we are trying to avoid. It's one thing to damage the customer's service. It's a whole other world of pain when you take out service for a street. Thank you for sharing and have a good evening, Tom
Thank you mama. We’re ready to go. We’re waiting for the ground to thaw. Hopefully no more snow for awhile. Thanks again and you have a great weekend too, Tom
I used to work for the actual company for about 20 years and I was a Trainer before I left a year ago. The Locator that came out seems to have his locator turned up too high. If you have any questions about Locates, let me know.
Thank you for your professional insights Larry. I am still learning how to use our locator. I wasn't able to connect to the fiber line. I couldn't find a tracer wire and ring clamping it didn't work. I watched the UCIS guy. The tracer wire was in the conduit, not the actual fiber line. So, l learned something. I appreciate your offer and I'm sure we will need advise as I continue to learn. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your weekend, Tom
This locator has saved us several times. Utility finding takes a lot of practice and learning. Even that pro in the video got the mark out wrong. That could have cost us big time. I was even happier with our purchase after this job, because I found the cable line more accurately. The whole trick comes down to knowing where and how to connect the transmitter. I bought the 130 because I wanted the additional frequencies. You need 512 for locating sondes and cameras. The locators the pros use are more than double that price. I know what I have is not as good, but it's been good enough for us. This new setup - the locator and air gun, lets us work for the homeowners that have many underground utilities. In the past I would mostly pursue the jobs with utilities in the air or maybe 1 utility line. This opens up a lot more work. So we'll make that money back quickly if we haven't already. There is a place by us that rents this equipment and provides some basic training. You may have one by you. I looked on market place for a while, but I was leery on buying used electronic equipment. With Amazon I could try it and return it if I didn't like it. Good luck, Tom
so if the lines are mismarked who is liable if they are cut? that locator is not cheap, $1600-$2600. ouch. who makes the gun you hook to the compressor?
First, I believe if you can prove they were mismarked then the excavator is not liable, but we were nervous when we hit the unmarked phone line. I wasn't sure what we would need to do to prove it wasn't marked. We had video and pictures. You're right. The locator was an investment, but it's allowing us to take on more work and dig with more confidence. I try to always say what tools we use in the description. Air Spade makes the pneumatic excavator. Have a great day, Tom
It is possible to rent them. We have 1 rental store that rented the air spade and a locator setup, but it was almost an hour away. I plan to use them often so we purchased ours.
That’s the plan Nic. I made sure the engineer knew we were taking a sidewalk square out and then putting it back. Sometimes the towns have a rule that you have to pour new if you remove one. Weather permitting we start on that tomorrow. Wish us luck and thanks again, Tom
