The 12-Step Programs are unquestionable systems of thought for those who get involved with them. If someone happens to succeed in overcoming whatever problem they have, the credit goes to the 12-Step Program. If they don't succeed, then they are blamed for not performing the program correctly, sufficiently, or sincerely. It's a "Heads I win, tales you lose" proposition. And the purpose of the 12-Step Programs is hidden as well. Ostensibly the purpose is to help people abstain from addictive behaviors and other compulsive problems. But besides the fact that the success rate of this program is appallingly low, the real purpose is the establishment of for-profit treatment centers that charge exorbitant fees using the 12-Step Program as the basis for their treatments regardless of the fact that they know full well that their industry is nothing more than a merry-go-round that in reality constitutes insurance and public aid fraud. Not all cults are malevolent, and one could argue that no matter how good a leader's qualities and intentions, leadership as a rule always has its dark side, seeing as its societal context is a dark world of perennial confusion and conflict. All of our actions are subject to the butterfly effect and by extension the law of unintended consequences. There is no such thing as a totally benign leader, and we are all members of at least one cult, whether we realize it or not. The trick is supporting the right ones.
Fun fact from me: I work a third job that is owned by a cult (Eastern Star Homes). They're actually a good cult, who simply perform weird shit in private (we saw a picture of their ceremonies back in the 80s). A friend of mine that works there too told me she almost shit herself once, when the room door opened and she saw a guy in a black robe peaking out and holding some sort of noose, and then closed the door. We all laughed hard after she told us this in the break room.
