So little footage exists for Art Pepper live. Big fan and to see his body movement in the is piece brings ask of the music that I've heard for years alive.. This recording sums it all up. Rythym never stops building. Suggest getting two good speakers on the floor and a pillow and lie down. This is music as it is meant to be. The king!!

I saw Coltrane, Miles, Monk, "Cannonball", the MJQ and many other jazz greats all in person - I do regret that I never saw two other jazz greats in person, Art Pepper and Cal Tjader - All of you "R.I.P." - Coachroche

I was fortunate to see and meet Art before he passed away. Carl Burnett's drumming was so swingin' and energetic with this group.

I got to hear Art several times in the last years of his life, and even to record him at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase in the '70s. Art was a MONSTER player. The last time I heard him was at Joe's, a month or so before his death, and he was roaring! Booked for the Chicago Jazz Fest a few months later, but he didn't live to make the gig.

I was lucky to see and talk the Art Pepper in Stuttgart 1980 or 1981 - one of the last concerts on this last tour in Europe. Great concert - they played form 130 minutes.
When I was in NY I visited and interviewed people from WKCR, when the sad news came in that AP died. They immediately changed the program and played several great tunes. This is the kind of radio I like!

Great to see this clip of Art.
I've never really cared much for the alto sound, BUT, two of my personal favorites are Paul Desmond and Art Pepper.
Two totally different styles, but two Masters who played with absolute honesty and emotion.
Sadly, I feel that Art and Chet Baker - another favorite - would not had been the great musicians they were if not for their troubled lives.
Dig Art's book "Straight Life" if you can.
    Fantastic book ~

Same here, Glenn.I saw him at Carmelo's in the Valley right before he died. He was so high I don't know how he played. He couldn't even introduce the band members. But ... when he started playing, he bought the house down! By the way, he had a pianist with him that escaped one of the soviet states in East Europe. The guy was amazing. I wish I could remember his name. I'd like to buy his music.

If I had a time machine I'd drop myself outside the front door of this joint with an hour to spare. This is a slow motion version of the 18:11 versions on the Galaxy recordings (my favorite) but how good is to to see Art at work and get a sense of his body motion. I also think this is the most kicking line up he had. Magnusson's bass is pure electricity and Billy Higgins is relaxed but so potent. When they lay me down, my last tune is going to be to this. Utterly wonderful.

Obviously late in his career and when he was infatuated with Coltrane.

it is recorded by RAI in Italy... I saw him live and it was on a rare occasion after 1989... Probably 1991-92 ? Cross check his dates in Italy, the group with whom he was touring, and you might have an answer . Post it Here please :-)

The album "No Limit", has a version of this in which he plays tenor, and comes into the studio the next day and plays alto sax, over it , as if a duet. I find it as probably the best sax I will ever hear. Not Joe Henderson, sonny rollins, charlie parker, coltrane, etc. His heart is huge as far as his playing. And his documentary is really trippin.
