My Great Grandfather helped build this railway line, this was before Woodville even existed. He also helped build the road and was the last toll keeper for the road, he was there when the first car ever went through, took them a little while to figure out what to charge for it, I think it was the same fee as for 2 horses and a large carriage. Evidently the road was built with pick and shovel but the railway was mostly done with dynamite. Thanks for the journey.
Did the trip from Hastings to Porirua (?) in the 1970s. Also did the trip both ways as part of an excursion, 1979 or 1980. I also have a vague memory of a car trip, and seeing a railcar near the now-daylighted tunnels at the Woodville end of the gorge.

Amazing that the rail line is still viable, but we'll never drive through the gorge again...
