People don't realize the importance of this right here. Monty recorded before ska happened. The Jamaican RnB, Ernest was a master during the ska and rocksteady periods and sly and robbie changed the sound of reggae. These are the originators all together in one room.
I don't know how they do it. Sly & Robbie are some of the world's greatest contemporary musicians. They must love music so much because they play, and play, and play. They will explore every genre and do not put themselves above anything. If I were a musician I would be so honored to play with them. I don't know the full list of musicians who have but it must be the longest list out there.
I've had the good fortune to see the "Immortal" Ernest Ranglin and Sly & Robbie live on more than one occasion, but a live performance by Monty Alexander has always eluded me so thanks GB for this upload - truly appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed! BTW a visit to Blue Note Tokyo is on my "Bucket List".
The Blue Note is the classiest place we've ever been playing at. The sound is pristine, the staff, both technical and for the restaurant / bar, is ultra classy and super professional. Japanese quality at its best
I'm not sure but this might be the superlative of all music ever... the best cover of a song and best interpretation of another instrument I've ever the pleasure of listening to...
How absolutely addictive. All four masters of their craft and what amazing collaboration? Never heard of Monty but looked him up and he has an outstanding repertoire and he is a "yard man" and fellow Kingstonian! Music to my ears, must see Ernest on his farewell performance at the barbican later this month. These men have done so much in their lifetime to bring joy and unity through their music. BIG UP and NUFF RESPECT!
You can't do much better than this lineup, like a force of nature! Thanks for sharing this precious footage Guillaume, means a lot to me and I guess many others 🖤
Four the hardest ruffest tuffest And superb way... The greatest of all times on one stage wat a tings off the hook....boooooooom shooooooooot......greater than great they are the greatest.....
the whole concert will be released on DVD later this year and the audio (much better than this video) will be on iTunes and all the other online stores.
Guillaume Bougard I cant find this album on iTunes or Spotify as you mentioned ? Also could you give me the name of this tune that they are playing ... many thanks in advance !
Big UPS to all the real Jamaican musicians like Monty Alexander and Ernest Ranglin! Catch a vibes with Jaime Hinckson on reggae/jazz piano: Miss Mac (Official Video)- Jaime Hinckson www.JaimeHinckson.com
Cool nice to hear from you. Go to listen Ernie's album Below the Baseline and you will hear it. Check the Skatalites as well with the title and listen. I know all of them personally and they are on the older and forgettable side, lol. Check me out on TH-cam too, bless
My question, Why is Sly Dunbar always wearing an industrial safety helmet? I have watched lots of videos, always wearing the safety helmet. Will be interesting to know.
The only thing steady about the beat is the kick. I’m talking about the groove that Sly goes into at 1:30, 2:27, 3:40, 5:40, 6:40, and 7:20. These times aren’t exact BTW. Sometimes, when Sly comes out of this groove and back into the regular groove, Robbie and Sly have trouble locking back up. It’s subtle, but I’m a bass player (40 plus years), I can hear it. And the triplet groove Sly goes into at 5:07 throws Monty off in the middle of his piano solo. Monty is forced to follow Sly, but maybe I’m wrong about that. Sly goes into a third groove at 8:30 which works great. Thanks for posting this.

Hell yes!
Yup
Not forgetting the Alpha School for Boys and the Sister's of Mercy
Masters At Work...
Musically, it just seems like they are talking to each other - without even saying a word - truly awesome
Obviously 🔥🙌🏾😎💫
I just love that little combo with Ernest and Robbie towards the end, so much talent. What a combination of truly talented musicians.
Time waits for no one, except these gents killin' the classic Ball of Fire.

I think they've been associated with production of over 500,000 songs. This is pure awesome, Jamaica's best pianist, guitarist, bassist and drummer.
Ahhhh ... just what I needed. Nothing like Ernest Ranglin in the groove !!!! As always......

Those percussive effects Ernest Ranglin gets on his guitar during the piano break - sublime

I've been a fan of all of these guys forever and they just seem to outdo themselves with the passing years. Stupendous!!
Just discovered Mr. Ranglin today; it's his 80th birthday!
Holy Cow....
Sly & Robbie just stay on that groove... rock solid...its hypnotic.
You can't do much better than this lineup, like a force of nature! Thanks for sharing this precious footage Guillaume, means a lot to me and I guess many others 🖤

Listening in the Lockdown of 2020- Amazing Tune
Being locked down with something like this isn't that bad after all....
There is an orgy in my ears! I'd die a very unhappy man if I never ever get to witness a little corner of heaven such as this live!
This kind of music is when you let the instruments do the singing, just listen to them.👌👍
I could dance day and night with this superb music!
Four the hardest ruffest tuffest And superb way... The greatest of all times on one stage wat a tings off the hook....boooooooom shooooooooot......greater than great they are the greatest.....
When a man with guitar meets a man with a piano, the man who listens is a happy man. Ernest the eastwood of guitar, Alexander the van cleef of piano

Guillaume Bougard again with a mindblowing video. It has your fingerprints all over it, G...
The song is Ball of Fire, not Ram Jam. Ernie is a ball of fire as usual!

Guillaume Bougard Where can I purchase this in DVD / Bluray?
Nowhere unfortunately...
Nothing like this
Could anybody help me please!!
The initial melody.. to which original song belongs? I can't remember.. thannk you!
Write Monty on his Facebook page.
WICKED !
Irie Guliaume B, the title for this song is incorrect, ti is called Balls of Fire and it was originally by the Skatlites, please correct
I know, but that's how they called it among themselves so I kept it
Cool nice to hear from you. Go to listen Ernie's album Below the Baseline and you will hear it. Check the Skatalites as well with the title and listen. I know all of them personally and they are on the older and forgettable side, lol. Check me out on TH-cam too, bless
loved it, but this is ball of fire. not ram jam >_
My question, Why is Sly Dunbar always wearing an industrial safety helmet? I have watched lots of videos, always wearing the safety helmet. Will be interesting to know.
Because he sas he is a worker, like a road worker, somebody who does physical label day in day out. A working man has to wear a helmet!
Guillaume Bougard, do me a favour and ask Sly on my behalf.
@MrJingobop Ok, I realized, sorry....
This song is "Ball of Fire" not ram jam
You're right, but that's how they were calling the tune when they rehearsed and how they wrote it down on the set list
!
I can’t understand what Sly is up to on the drums. Is anyone else having trouble with his drumming?
making sure people can dance with a steady beat
The only thing steady about the beat is the kick. I’m talking about the groove that Sly goes into at 1:30, 2:27, 3:40, 5:40, 6:40, and 7:20. These times aren’t exact BTW. Sly goes into a third groove at 8:30 which works great.
Thanks for posting this.
@@evensteve284 yeah agreed. Still really lovely
@@tabou1 It's called " variations on a cross-stick ska"!.
i was until i listened through cans - extreme offbeat.
why is the drummer wearing a hard hat? lol
@LOL? TH-cam's most perfect reply.
Not like that I can't...
Too bad the drummer loses it so often.
great sense of humor, hopefully not inadvertent, but not sure...
No...around 1:30 and 2 minutes his goes off, catches it, then goes off big time and even has to stop altogether at 2 minutes to get caught back up.
I see what you mean: at 2 he does something all Reggae drummers do often. It's called syncopation
@@peteorthmann3183 you are talking about the mighty Sly Dunbar. He was in reggae 9 months after his birth. Not his best show anyway.
