The Bulgarian team definitely got overconfident. They’d just beaten the last two World Cup winners! And Italy had looked very beatable until that semifinal. Italy played their best half of the tournament in the first half. The Bulgarians turned it on in the second half but it was too late. There should have been a penalty whistled against Italy in the second half they would have tied the game. But those types of calls don’t go against a giant like Italy when there are medals at stake. Unfortunate but true.

If it wasn't the French referee Quiniou at semi-final (gutted because Bulgaria kicked out France off the World Cup Qualifications), who knows...... Bulgaria could've beat Brazil in the final. I remember Brazil didn't play very well vs Italy and needed penalties to win. Both Brazil and Italy looked very tired at that final match. But Bulgarian players would've forget about fatigue and "eaten the grass" and fight like a Lion vs Lion. You never know what could've happen, we can only guess. Of course - FIFA arranged the "better" final match - Brazil vs Italy, the two countries each had won 3 world cups by that time. This match may look more intriguing, yes, who will win 4th title, but Bulgaria vs Brazil could've be the ultimate game for a small country that gave everything to reach the semi-finals. And could've make even people who don't watch Football - to watch that match. That golden Bulgarian generation deserved the chance of their life. But FIFA played very nasty placing a French referee, that's how they roll.
These Bulgarian players were legends, literally all household names in Bulgaria still, almost 30 years later. Sadly, Bulgaria's national team has been a complete embarrassment since this generation of players, with the singular exception of Berbatov. I don't know what happened... They haven't qualified to a World Cup since 1998 and keep getting worse it seems, they literally got beat by Kosovo a couple of years ago. Even with the new expanded World Cup format, I don't see them qualifying in 2026. What exactly was it that produced such outstanding players in the late 80s and early 90s that culminated in this quarterfinal, and what's different now that it can't happen again... would love to know the answer to that one.
Good team, yes. Campos was a good goalie and they played possession football well. But they were gifted a phantom penalty and the Bulgarians played with 10 men (ridiculous red card to the Bulgarian fullback) for an hour. And the Bulgarian team was already playing without their starting fullback, center back and defensive midfielder. They had a winger playing center back (he happened to provide a great assist for Stoichkov’s goal). The full match is on TH-cam, although it’s with Bulgarian commentary. I re-watched it recently, had forgotten about the horrible refereeing.
@@SKa-tt9nm the 1st half was superb. Fantastic football from both teams. Stoichkov midfield general. But the referee completely ruined the game in the 2nd half giving a string of free kicks and yellow cards for non-existent fouls.
Socialist Bulgaria never won a single match at the World Cup in 6 tries. Free Bulgaria finished 4th and beat the last two World Cup winners. If it was up to the “socialists” in Bulgaria, Stoichkov’s career would have been over in 1985 after the fight against Levski. He became one of the best players ever precisely because he was allowed to go to Barcelona. That would have never happened under socialism.

If it wasn't the French referee Quiniou at semi-final (gutted because Bulgaria kicked out France off the World Cup Qualifications), who knows...... Bulgaria could've beat Brazil in the final.
I remember Brazil didn't play very well vs Italy and needed penalties to win. Both Brazil and Italy looked very tired at that final match. But Bulgarian players would've forget about fatigue and "eaten the grass" and fight like a Lion vs Lion. You never know what could've happen, we can only guess.
Of course - FIFA arranged the "better" final match - Brazil vs Italy, the two countries each had won 3 world cups by that time. This match may look more intriguing, yes, who will win 4th title, but Bulgaria vs Brazil could've be the ultimate game for a small country that gave everything to reach the semi-finals. And could've make even people who don't watch Football - to watch that match. That golden Bulgarian generation deserved the chance of their life. But FIFA played very nasty placing a French referee, that's how they roll.

These Bulgarian players were legends, literally all household names in Bulgaria still, almost 30 years later. Sadly, Bulgaria's national team has been a complete embarrassment since this generation of players, with the singular exception of Berbatov. I don't know what happened... They haven't qualified to a World Cup since 1998 and keep getting worse it seems, they literally got beat by Kosovo a couple of years ago. Even with the new expanded World Cup format, I don't see them qualifying in 2026. What exactly was it that produced such outstanding players in the late 80s and early 90s that culminated in this quarterfinal, and what's different now that it can't happen again... would love to know the answer to that one.

The fact that Mexico took this Bulgarian team to PK’s in the round of 16 actually shows how good that Mexican team was.
Good team, yes. Campos was a good goalie and they played possession football well. But they were gifted a phantom penalty and the Bulgarians played with 10 men (ridiculous red card to the Bulgarian fullback) for an hour. And the Bulgarian team was already playing without their starting fullback, center back and defensive midfielder. They had a winger playing center back (he happened to provide a great assist for Stoichkov’s goal).
The full match is on TH-cam, although it’s with Bulgarian commentary. I re-watched it recently, had forgotten about the horrible refereeing.

@@SKa-tt9nm the 1st half was superb. Fantastic football from both teams. Stoichkov midfield general. But the referee completely ruined the game in the 2nd half giving a string of free kicks and yellow cards for non-existent fouls.

If it was up to the “socialists” in Bulgaria, Stoichkov’s career would have been over in 1985 after the fight against Levski. He became one of the best players ever precisely because he was allowed to go to Barcelona. That would have never happened under socialism.
