Great review Zach! One comment/suggestion: the grip test ramp you do generates great data, but it seems to only evaluate static friction (i.e.coefficient of static friction). It may also be interesting to measure the time it takes for the shoe to reach the bottom of the ramp (kinetic friction) which would indicate how easy sliding is after the sliding has already begun. This may be hard to do accurately but perhaps with camera footage, it would be feasible.
Just say it loud and clear Zach. This is not a good update. I know it's dangerous to say what you really think but based on your review, which is once again top notch, this is obviously a wrong step from Asics. It seems to me they think that all tennis players nowadays are fat, huge and heavy. But it's the opposite at least on a certain level. Gel-Res is not some average sneaker. It should be state of the art tennis shoe. But this update looks worse also in terms of design and build quality. It looks bulky, heavy and not very responsive. What's with all of the protection? The Gel-Res 9 was protected like a tank, no need to make it even more robust. And the extra space inside for wider feet is exactly what made me to switch from Asics to Wilson years ago. Asics did start to make Solution Speed line of shoes too wide and now they are doing it with Gel-Res. Well, this will be a dissapointing update for many. Especially for die hard fans of the line. Hunting for the sales among "big, huge, heavy" hobby players is not the way a premium brand like Asics should go. I hope they will learn a lesson with this dissapointing update. Peace.
I love the new ASICS Novablast 5 and the ff2 and gel res 9 with me all time favorite shoe is the speed solution 2 from ten years ago. I’m gonna stock up on 9s but I’ll give these a shot vamos!
Thx for the review! Having weird feet, the only thing I'm really allowed to care about is fit, so I'm actually excited about the wide, straight forefoot.
Halfway through the video, but I wonder why more shoe companies don’t try implementing an exterior shank/truss system like Dynawall for basketball shoes. You could theoretically even do a drop in mid sole while still maintaining really good support.
2nd lol! Thanks again for the great review, doc! Always nice to know about more new tech from other kicks! I don't play tennis, but seeing all these tech makes me wanna try them and the sport lol!
they need to sell that vader black colorway. little worried about the clunky weight compared to gr9/8 but this shoe looks great for people who wear out shoes fast. looks like I will go down half size again like with previous models since gelres run long awesome review thanks for vid
I have always problem in my toes, which shoes would you recommend? I was wearing asics speed ff and ruined my nail, now im with the babolat jet premura 2, better but not 100% confortable for my toe, any suggestions? Thanks great channel
Great review. With the higher medial ankle collar, can you get a runners knot on that side and how would it affect wearing an Aircast A60 ankle support too please?
Sounds like I need to start trying some new shoes out once I go through my 9s. I definitely do not have the footwork to make the most out of these new 10s. Shame--I found the 9s such a well rounded, confidence-boosting, wear it and forget it quality. I'm just not the target audience anymore.
I agree totally about re the 9. I have no idea why they’d go this route for the X. This is a maximalist shoe in a line that was a very versatile shoe. I’m buying more 9’s right now.
I bought the 9s on your recommendation and have loved them...but that bulbous feeling was still there, I sometimes think I should have bought a half a size smaller too. Guess that translates to the Xs as well. I did get mines on a smaller sale, but nothing like the current sales for pushing out inventory of the 9. Still have plenty of life in the current ones no idea if I want to buy another 9 taking up the current sales offers, or try the more chunkier Xs later on.
@ ASICS website here for Mexico has them on sale and haven’t announced the X yet. Having said that with taxes and duties they’re over 160USD regular price here accounting for exchange rate shenanigans.
Q: Tried GR9 in standard D width bc everyone seems to love them and my flat arch, sort of wide foot made sense. Bzzt. So tight in toe box felt like a soccer cleat! Thus tried GR9 in 2E wide. *Still* too tight in toe box. Anyone think GRX might be ticket with this wider "anatomical" toe box? (FWIW defaulted to K-Swiss HE2 in D for now, not even Wide or the HSupreme as on-paper would suggest for flat arch, wide and fits waay better.) WTF!?!
I had the gel res 7 and nothing felt better on foot except the GP turbo. But the problem is that their cushion only lasted a few months before the shoe became a brick. Does anyone know if things have changed?
The 9 is a great shoe and the cushioning lasts. I play 4-5 times a week and have had 6 months with no loss of cushion. You can’t compare these to a GP turbo. Nothing ASICS does compares to that shoe in terms of cushioning.
The Gel9 has been pretty disappointing for me, heal support rips after a 3 months of wear and the bottom of my heals tend the to be sore after a couple hours of play.
9 was my favorite ever. I'm disappointed by the X. Honestly though, I might be forced to try it. The 9 is protective and heavy enough. I liked the GP Turbo, but the tank of the new Gel Res looks to be too much shoe. Any suggestion? Maybe downgrade into the Dedicate?
The resolution 5 is still my favourite shoe in this line. The 10 are my least favourite. The 9s are pretty awful too. The whole line has gone downwards over time.
No chance I’m buying these. Huge fan of the 9. The versatility of that shoe is what made it so great. Not too light, not too heavy, not too much cushion. The Joker shoe is the tank of the line. Why make another tank of a shoe? Why widen the toe box? It’s the shoe no one asked for.
I own previous Gel Resolution 9 and thought they are clunky. I've never understood what is the purpose of covering the whole upper with TPU in tennis. The only part that goes for me is outsole. I get it for soccer shoes where you use the upper to actually hit the ball. Thus the weight is almost 17 oz and 120 heat...
Couldn’t disagree more re the 9 being clunky. It’s definitely not a minimalist shoe - ie speed and no cushion - but no way this shoe would be as popular with high level players and pros it were clunky. The upper on the 9 is super flexible. This X absolutely looks / sounds like a brick. Not a chance I’m buying this boot.
You can get all the cushioning you want with a custom insole. If you build it into the shoe you’ll make it unplayable for almost everyone. In tennis most people will prefer a less cushioned shoe as the response is much faster and feels more connected. Perhaps at the level you play at it’s not evident but this is the common rule for (most of) the rest of us.
@@bounce_hit3534 You'll probably be fine. They're still selling Gel Res 8s on their US website, I would not be surprised if they kept the 9s in a couple different colors.

Don't all these shoes' coefficients change a lot when they're used and broken in?
It'll be interesting to see if Asics continues to push in this direction with the line or if they revert back based on feedback.
Thanks for the video! These look promising, but also waiting for your (hopefully upcoming soon) review on the Nike Vapor 12’s.

Not really. Many people complain about the toe box being too narrow in Gel 8 and 9.
Not really, some of us just have wide feet lmao agree with the rest tho, the 9s were perfect so I'm sticking with them
wish Asics released their basketball shoes in America, I've heard great things.
Honored to make my Foot Doctor Zach debut 🙌
Been waiting for this review! Thanks for all the great work :)
I still use the Gel Resolution 7. It's my go to stable shoe
I love the new ASICS Novablast 5 and the ff2 and gel res 9 with me all time favorite shoe is the speed solution 2 from ten years ago. I’m gonna stock up on 9s but I’ll give these a shot vamos!
Yes it is that time of the year, new tennis drops!
Thx for the review!

Amazing review doc! 🎉

Looks like I’ll be sticking with my 9s for a while lol.
Agreed, these seem terrible!

Great review doctor. At least the Gel-Res 9 will be easier to catch on discount. Any reviews on shoes for like standing up all day and walking?
I have always problem in my toes, which shoes would you recommend? I was wearing asics speed ff and ruined my nail, now im with the babolat jet premura 2, better but not 100% confortable for my toe, any suggestions? Thanks great channel

Since you couldn't stop heal slippage no matter what lacing configuration the containment should be at 3 of 5 score at most
Nah once they broke in they were just a moderate - side to side is so good though so only one point off IMO
Thank you, FDZ - So glad I watched this before buying, I will be skipping this model.
Same with me. Now I’m back to the drawing board

is the tongue still attached to the inside of the shoe with the strap like gr9?
Can you please review an anta running shoe such as the bellero?
Great review as always man! Really appreciate your job! Up to now what’s your top 3 clay shoes that combine speed and stability? Thanks a lot!

where are you seeing sales on 9? tennis-point still has them at $130+
@ ASICS website here for Mexico has them on sale and haven’t announced the X yet. Having said that with taxes and duties they’re over 160USD regular price here accounting for exchange rate shenanigans.
@@zeroelus gotcha. Hoping i can score another pair on the cheap here in US.
Is this okay for basketball too?? Any thoughts??
Not keen on this shoe, but I like the simple all black color scheme. Hope they produce some speed w/ the same design.

Did that weight says 16.9oz???!?! That would be the heaviest shoe on your sheet. Thanks again for another great review.
Can you please review the asics sky elite ff mt 3
I had the gel res 7 and nothing felt better on foot except the GP turbo. But the problem is that their cushion only lasted a few months before the shoe became a brick. Does anyone know if things have changed?

Gel res 9 were way better and better looking. What have they done?!

yo this could be my hoop shoe!
The resolution 5 is still my favourite shoe in this line. The 10 are my least favourite. The 9s are pretty awful too. The whole line has gone downwards over time.
Man that outsole looks like my Michelin tires 😂 rugged!
where are all these tennis shoes coming from lol. last version had this huge build up. I havent heard anything on these.
Thx for the video! Sounds way too heavy and hot for a Texas based 50+ singles player ;-)
Finally a tennis shoe that’s designed with human anatomy in mind.

Asics makes Gel Resolution X a hybrid shoes because they foresee the retirement of Djoker?!
Still think resolution 7s were the best ones
FDZ!
Their cushioning (imo) sucks. They need to have some ff turbo pucks in the heel and forefoot.
You’ll be happy when they weight about 1kg
@ those are lighter foams… it would also make it more forgiving. Don’t comment if you don’t know what you’re talking about

Heals slippage is a no go period thanks for the heads up period these are a hard pass
Is it worth upgrading from the Gel-Resolution 9?
Doesn’t sound like it if the Gel Res 9 is working out for you. The issue is supply of those will eventually dry up
Doc gave GR9 36/40. I guess the answer is no?
@@bounce_hit3534 You'll probably be fine. They're still selling Gel Res 8s on their US website, I would not be surprised if they kept the 9s in a couple different colors.
IDK but these look big, heavy and uncomfortable... I think they are too much shoe, lol
Not sure about these. Shame.
this is a horrible shoes, Asics blunders this time
