$143 million at the box office on a $40 million budget, an Academy Award for best sound and Daniel Day-Lewis voted the British Actor of the Year ? This is not what I'd call underrated. The movie crazed my whole generation, with all kids wanting to sleep in teepees on summer holidays the whole mid-90s.

To say the Cameron family were "not strangers" was a vast understatement by Hawkeye, who would have to be fighting to suppress his emotions. As made abundantly clear in the earlier scene, these people weren't just friends, but like family, who openly and warmly greeted them into their home. This was the equivalent of coming home and finding your own family viciously murdered.

As a woodsman, and a hunter and a former US Army Infantryman, and a Michigan backwoodsman for all my life...the pre-revolutionary war/colonial days of America fascinate me. I feel a connection with these people. What a terrific film about those days!!

A very affecting, powerful scene from a tremendous film. First time I watched it in Fall of 1992 I was moved by it like few movies before or since. And yes, the soundtrack is as big a factor here as the setting, directing, acting, and editing.

I think Daniel Day Lewis is retired from acting now - fortunate for him, unfortunate for us. He was an extraordinary actor. One of the best.

I love this scene. It's clear that Hawkeye and his family knew these people. They definitely feel their loss but they know that time is of the essence. They didn't have several hours to dig graves and bury the dead. They are in a pure survival situation and will do what needs to be done. Plus the way Hawkeye tells her the situation without shouting histrionics like I've known these people all my life and without being condescending is well done.

It's not just -- or even primarily -- the time lost. A later scene makes it clear that burying them would have revealed to other Huron Indians, with whom they were at war, that their party had passed that way, and that would put the Huron on their trail, which was not something they could afford.

    • @MrLantean
      @MrLantean 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Hawkeye later explains the reason why they did not bury the family that got slaughtered. They are traveling across hostile territory and did their best to conceal their tracks. By burying the dead indicates that they did pass through, and the Hurons will pick up their tracks after a thorough search. So for their own safety, it is best to leave the dead as they were.

@@MrLantean Not to mention detection and pursuit would have meant they'd have had to abandon their passengers or die defending them as they would not have been able to move as quickly through the country as natives do.

It's an interesting take in this film that Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye is on his way to Kentucky with Chingachgook and Uncas, considering that 20 years later he would play Abraham Lincoln, a Kentucky-born U.S. president!

As a real Native from Canada - How i see this Scene
War Party could come back to Loot = Caught
war party Catch them in the act of burying
The war part finds them and tracks them quicker because of the time spent in Buring.
War Party Tracks then from time of burial from wetness to freshness of burial and tracks around burial
They left them to have more time to go and create distance from Warparty and not create anything to be tracked.
And remember, in these times, you lived or died by tracking animals to eat.
If I were the war party? I would just wait 500 years to be the only people in North America to live free on the land. Pay no tax and collect tax to live free.👺

As a not "real Native from Canada" the reason you leave the bodies unburied is that you don't know how many war parties are about and whether they are ahead of you...or behind you. If you leave evidence you were there, a following party can determine how long ago you were there when they arrive...and then they can determine how far ahead of them you likely are. You endanger yourselves disturbing a scene that will do the victims no good and, in this scene, they can do more good arriving at the fort with word that the homesteads are being attacked.
Doesn't take a "native from anywhere" to use common sense while prioritizing how best their presence can serve the greater good.
