    Really interesting. He plays exactly 2 snare hits in the whole of the song, that's why he is unique and his metronomic sense of rhythm is fantastic.

    • @JamesBos
      @JamesBos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Nope! Not double tracked, but running through a tape delay (Roland RE-201 space echo IIRC) that would have been on an aux and mixed to another track. Very reggae! Fuck I love Stewart Copeland!

    • @Diax1324

  • @jckhammer

    2:12 - 2:18 kind of bums me a bit. I rememebr learning this song for our band and i had to practice and thought it was one of the hardest parts to learn as a polyrhythm with 8th notes on the rim and a swing pattern on the hi hat. But im listening to this on here and it really sounds like its just echoes on the rim spaced to make it like he is playing 8ths against the hi hat shuffle. Bit disappointing after 30 years of when i learned this ...not taking anything away from him as a drummer but effects look they can fool you

    • @mikereseigh
      @mikereseigh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      well it advanced your playing though. I know it seems like a lot of work for nothing but it really improved your skills sounds like.

    • @steve16823
      @steve16823 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It was never any secret that Copeland’s track relied heavily on the echo. I remember reading an interview back in the day where Copeland mentioned that he had to learn how to duplicate the effect without the echo so he could play it live.

    Alternate/guide vocal..?

    • @austin78993
      @austin78993 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably a scrap track where they played live. Vocal is the easiest thing to redo and they probably redid it and overdubbed it constantly until they got it right. They probably scrapped everything but the drums from that initial take and rebuilt the song on top of it everyone playing a track at a time so they could have the best bass track. best rhythm guitar. Best lead. Best vocal. I hope that makes sense.

      @BeesWaxMinder 4 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @jaggass
    @jaggass ปีที่แล้ว

    Sting's voice can be heard due to mic bleed and is mostly singing the 2nd verse and sounds like he's figuring out the melody on the fly. I guess it was kept so Stewart didn't have to re record the drum track but luckily the final lead vocal track drowned out Sting's guide vocal. Tape machines and mic's picked up everything back then.

  • @lucatn
    @lucatn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Seems that Sting in the background is singing just to let Stewart know where he is in the song, as he doesn't sing like that in the original version

    • @austin78993
      @austin78993 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's because they probably did a live take, wiped out everything but the drums and maybe Andy's simple guitar riff. Then, they took out sting's vocal and redid it last. Probably some bass and guitar. You can hear stewart say often that "The drummer has to get it right live, nobody else does" and he's right. Unless you use a metronome which they probably didn't, you can pull everything out and redo it except for the drums. That's likely what they did I would guess.
