Yamaha FGDP 30 Review - (Acoustic Kit Presets & Other Features) ||

- Best Self-contained drum thing I've found so far...to be honest. This review contains performances using only the "acoustic" -type kits found natively in the unit. That's more or less what I typically use all the time anyway.

Here's the unit in action, with some other instruments, like a hits based riff to play on top of th-cam.com/video/-XGLHYp5Xys/w-d-xo.html
Damn, woman. A virtuoso guitarist AND a virtuoso stenographer? You never cease to impress.
I actually thought about studying stenography due to this realization label 😂
"" Oh are you a drummer? what instrument do you play?"
"it's complicated"
I think it's also important to note that at one point not too long ago the drum set itself did not exist.... It's a relatively new instrument
I bet you are better than anyone at Yamaha who tested out its responsiveness! Super impressive as always!!!
I don't know if it's possible to quantify who's better at anything, but I will say that I probably use this thing more like another instrument as opposed to a workstation, which is what other people tend to do. I just kind of think of it as an alternative to an acoustic drum kit, and basically want to help develop it as an instrument unto itself... There's obviously some pushback from the regular drum community but, it's kind of a paradigm similar to that between the acoustic piano and the synthesizer... Anyway, I still really like checking out regular acoustic drummers, that's pretty much all I watch, so whatever I'm doing is informed by actual players of the instrument, to put it succinctly, not so much what people are doing on the electronic music scene.
impressive drumming skills . i guess your tapping skills come in very handy here .
I'd like to think so.... 👋😁
Amazing playing, I'm glad Yamaha came up with something that can keep up with your skills. ❤ Thank you for sharing
I don't know why it took so long for someone to design this kind of thing, to be honest
Golly! Insane drumming skills, and that device sounds so realistic!!!
Holy moly that’s amazing dexterity on that thing
you're insanely skilled
i used to do that on my old yamaha ma-150 🙂
Really Impressive. For a drummer, it's intimidating too.
I mean, I know of at least two acoustic drummers who are also finger drummers, one of whom goes by the name of David Haynes. To say that that man is nice with it is a gross understatement. And his weapon of choice tends to be the Akai MPC.
God damn you are so good on that drum pad. Crazy. Super fun watching you play it.
I'm glad, maybe I can get more people to tune into this thing, the drumming I mean
Better than most 'real' drummers !! Yamaha should pay you for marketing it! Fantastic!!
I'm not averse to such an idea... ☺️
Hell yeah ~ shredding on that thing!
That unit is so groovy Tory, now I want one, thank you for the review & demo Tory ❤❤❤
You’re exceptionally good on that! 🥳As every instrument I’m sure! But this is impressively fun, woah.

Génial !
Merci pour cette démo !!
Very cool how well your tapping chops transfer over!
Very cool - Thanks for the review. Interested in this!
So impressed with your playing, enjoyed and marvelled at how you created such a great drum performance. Yes, I'm giving a lot of praise but it would be wrong not to, you deserve it 🏴
Would love to see you make some songs with the China, India Pop, Percussion Master and Japan settings.
Very talented and inspiring as always. 🤘🏽🤘🏽
We'll see what happens
Looks and sounds badass! I had a MUCH bigger and less fancy Yamaha version from the 90's that I hooked into a delay pedal and my Gorilla amp lol!
24:52 heheh sounds like some Mario game w/o any melody. Just a jungle area with lots of traps. nice piece o' gear. I was messing around with drum machines waaaay back in the 80s. The sample quality has improved and pad sensitivity. I don't use them anymore but I use Addictive Drums 2 and a DX7 keyboard to do all my MIDI stuff but I don't really play drums much. I try to find beats from presets but eventually I go in and add stuff etc. keep a rockin.
That was an impressive review. I hope we'll be hearing more of this in the future.
👋🙂
Really amazing musicality Tory! So impressive. I'm just about to pull the trigger on the Roland HPD-20, but it's so expensive. You've got me thinking about the Yamaha now. I had dismissed it because it didn't have 1/4" connector and didn't seem like a professional instrument, but under your fingers and with your heart and mind, it sounds very professional. Thanks for the demo!
I'm very impressed that you can actually choke the drums. I don't think you can do that even on expensive e-kits. Cool that they would think to include that.
The sounds are fantastic too.
Yeah, I thought so too.
Wow! This thing looks sweet! And sounds great! Really nice demo and review! 👌
P.S I remember my dad bought me a Yamaha keyboard when I was like 15 or so, around 2000 i think. It was one of the first with proper display. I could tune it and even record 6 tracks + 1 more if I recorded live on top. I used it so much, and made a lot of music. And also, I was blown away by how good the drums were on that keyboard. So I know for a fact that Yamaha really knows these things well.
Just bought one because of this video. Yamaha need to pay you commission.
Have fun
I really like how you work. I use as drums, bass and everything I need Vst plugins (EZDrummer) etc
Thanks, I used to do everything with sequencing but now it just isn't fun for me to do it that way anymore. Also, when I listen back to recordings or videos or something I get sort of an extra dimension of a kick in realizing that the drums are real time. It's also pretty cool how you can listen to a tune twice in a row and focus on a different instrument etc versus just knowing that it was sequenced and it's kind of ultimately not really an interactive thing
Cat meow at 2:22 nice
Just bought one! Yamaha need to sign you up!
I wouldn't be against it if they did
Wow! Of course you got skill so results may vary for rest of us, but this unit sounds great . Was looking at an E drum set like Simmons Titan 70 but don't have the room. This may be the way to go! Thanks for showing it.
I still have a Zoom drum machine. It looks alot like this one! I still need to practice freestyling more on it. You are able to incorporate far more than I'm able to with tapping. Thank you for the inspiration!
So this isn't a drum machine, it has no sequencing or anything like that, this is for playing drums with your fingers, that's what it is made for
@@TorySlusher oh ok. Mine has the tap feature with the sound banks. I just never learned how to set patterns, so I just tapped on the pads. That Yamaha looks so much like mine.
Let’s goo.. that’s insane
Man can you cook on that thing!!!
Sounds great!!
Such an impressive finger drumming skill! I want some lesson videos...
Thanks, definitely check out my other channel which is nothing but finger drumming...
Wow your amazing ❤
That's a great technique. I'd like to listen to a song with music in it.
One more thought. The fingers can get to the pads so much faster than hands finger and sticks move across space onto drums. It has a quality of it's own.
Excellent playing! I've had my FGDP50 for few months and wouldnt even know where to start on some of those riffs! Any chance of some tutorial videos? Much appreciated! Thanks

@@TorySlusher the YT algorithms beat you to it :) am watching now thanks for all your great work
This is first I have heard of this thing. I was a mildly tempted to buy a Roland Handsonic back in the day, but I demoed one and you really had to wail on the pads to get any sound out of it.
Alas, they haven't solved the electronic drum Achilles heel of "machine gun" sounds here, but the pad responsiveness and fun factor and affordability still make it kind of tempting :)
NO LIE. when I saw the video talking about this product. I thought of you
👋🙂... So did I, which is why I immediately bought one
hell freakin heck yeah
This will be perfect for making demos
You have it all fingered out! A little levity there.
Well, this thing has a lot of depth to it and playability, so I plan on doing a lot more with it in videos
@@TorySlusher 👍
I love it. It's a trap set with tympani should you wish or want? Using fingering as a layout that works and I am sure getting the final layout has been a ride, must be programmable for sure. Training an instrument. I dunno, I don't own one, but it's nice to wonder. I have an old KORG synth that does drum stops, but... This form for fingers is real nice. Tapping shit is definitely your thing. lol
Yeah, ever since I discovered this finger drumming thing I've been into it. This is the first actual unit that I've ever played that I felt like actually is about 99% there, at any rate it is definitely usable as an instrument unto itself, in fact, if you didn't tell anyone that you were using this they probably would think it was regular acoustic drums... In most cases, probably not the audiophiles but, that can be neurotic anyway
@@TorySlusher Gotcha. That timbali stop is so interesting. To think of super humans smacking drums at super human speed is way off my radar. I love peoples time though. An adagio is quite nice at times.
Thanks!
Welcome 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
You are a master ‼️‼️👍👍
Je viens de réécouter et franchement vous devriez être embauchée par Yamaha parce que votre démo m'a fait commander la FGDP 50 ...
Multi Purpose Full TAPPING
Wow Tory, thanks for the demo. Looks next gen! Hard to find units geared to folks that can actually play, and play with a light touch... Do you prefer the 30 over the 50? Best, Daniel
I think either is probably fine, I just didn't really need all the extra functionalities like the trigger pads and the USB slot. I can literally just plug in my sample pad and use that, not to mention that I usually just stick it on one kit and leave it there, so the extra stuff just kind of is superfluous.... And probably causes the battery to run down faster
@@TorySlusher Thanks! 🤙🏼
Hi Tory, I was already thinking about buying an Akai MPX8 because of you😃, but now you made me change my mind again and I think I'll buy a Yamaha FGDP😂. I don't know how playing the fingerdrum it will just be a hobby form me to try yo learn and enjoy a bit. I wanted to ask you why you didn't opt for the Yamaha FGDP 50? The price difference here is not very big (70 dolars), and the Yamaha FGDP 50 has a display that makes settings easier. In your opinion, is there any disadvantage on the Yamaha FGDP 50 in comparation with the 30? Thank you so much for sharing all your talent
🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Yo Whiplash! I need more cow bell please. Now from the top and two and three on you.....🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 I SAID MORE COW BELL!!!! 🤪🤪🤪 (sorry couldn't resist! 🤣🤣🤣 🤘😝)
✌️😋 🥁🥁🥁 😘👌
Youre good at that gdamn
need a full version of percussion master!!!!!
WoooW! Great sense of rhythm!
Awesome! Love the sounds. I've got an old Boss Dr Rhythm that sits gathering dust, as the 'false" triggering just drove me nuts. I didn't hear a single false trigger in your playing
Before really getting into guitar, I played Drums in a Band, and there's something to be said for how the sticks bounce on the skins. Do you play physical drums as well? If you do, are you missing anything critical when playing on the Yamaha FGDP 30? You play it extremely well, and it sounds much better than your other Drum Modeler. It looks like Yamaha did a great job with the pad layout.
For guitar, I use an HX Stomp, so I have no problems with Modelers. Do you have any videos where you talk about your signal path/chain, gear, recording software, etc.?
Subscribed. You should send a link of this video to Yamaha. I'm sure they'd be delighted and surprised to hear what you can do with their Drum Modeler.🙂
Yeah this thing is more or less perfect to me, I didn't get any kind of weird notes happening at all
This was an important piece of kit for you. The bad midi drum sounds were the worst part of your productions, despite your good finger drumming. This is going to make everything you do sound more legit.
I don't know, the stuff I was using before was kind of.... Well, I was originally thinking of just using like hand percussion like a cajon or something, and then I thought well why not just take it the next step... So it was never really like a production thing for me it was just like, what can I add that is like percussion for videos etc trying to compete with these big multimillion dollar studios is just ridiculous and something I'm not even interested in the first place
Hi Tory, thank you for this amazing demonstration. Can the speaker be muted or turned down when listening through headphones?
Yeah. The input output routing versus when you're recording etc and just using the tiny speakers and monitor, they also thought that out as well... You can even use the onboard monitor as a recording monitor through USB when you're recording into a daw.... I don't know why you would want to do that but, you can
@@TorySlusher Thank you 🙏
What kind of review is that? Oh, I see, a groovin' review!
This is what you used on the last album, Right?? You got that unit mastered.
Actually, no... That was an Akai
Can you set up your own 'custom kit' using the internal sounds? I'm really impressed with this in every way, shame it doesn't have a sequencer!!
I believe you can, I haven't messed around with it because of the layout is rather well thought out as is. As far as the sequencer goes, I mean, this thing actually was designed to just be played with the fingers. Having said that, I believe the fgdp50 actually has the ability to record what you just played, so in essence it's the same thing as a sequencer or a looper or something perhaps
@@TorySlusher yes, correct - the 50 let’s you record and add to each recoding too, so you build layers or just record say bass and snare then go and do hi hats etc

Cool!! How sensitive are the dynamics on each press? Is it adjustable?
I literally mentioned that in the video. .... sensitive
Sounds cool. Miss my old SR 16. I used to be in a band where I was the drummer and played it live. Do you play a real kit? Seems like you could.
I prefer the fingerdrumming, tbh
@@TorySlusher me too. I can get three things going pretty good, but that damn hihat foot always gets me

🤩 Is there any way to configure the snare sound to morph into a roll when you hit it really fast?
You just do it with your fingers

Can you tell me if this device has any effects like Reverb for example?
I think it does, yes
you are better at finger drumming than me.
Well thanks
It's kind of subjective too, though
You are not Alone.
Well no, of course not
Did you look at the fancier 50 version too?
Yeah
👏👏👏👏👏👏🌷🌷🌷
Is there a display? How do u know what preset your on?
There's like an announcer voice, haha .. but since I only basically stick to one or two kits and it has a favorite button.... Don't really need the screen. Is probably yet another drain on the battery too.
I ain't no nothing bout drumming butt I watch yo vid, support, yeah, support.
Bro, what the fuck hahaha. You could replace so many drummers I know

@@michaelcreel106 TH-cam generally allows you to post links unless it's to a site that's shady or competitive. I told Tory a few others gave positive reviews, she clearly could play it better, maybe she was right regarding negative reviews coming from software users and I recommended she seriously consider looking into affiliate marketing programs because her opinion on any topic related to music is relevant and if we purchased this pad through her it wouldn't cost us a penny more but give her a chance to earn an income she deserves to make because Amazon or whoever would give her a percentage of their profit. It's pretty clear to all of us here she's world class. She just hasn't been discovered yet. You agree right? I want to see her do well. This was one of the better reviews and it was definitely the best physical presentation on what this pad was capable of. Google's AI may have thought my criticism regarding software users was too harsh? I don't know why they deleted my comment but my comment was definitely deleted and this is all I discussed.

i'm pretty sure that isn't what it was designed for....but...okay
I think this is exactly what this unit was designed for, actually
well yeah maybe....there IS some evidence to suggest as much. in fact i think they should make a Tory Slusher Signature Model!! @@TorySlusher
Got one because of this video.
At the very least it's a great recording tool
