I was black in this game. I was thinking way too much about where to settle and ended up overthinking it and placing wrong. Watching this back now though, I don’t think I could have played the position I was in any other way. I tried my best to get the board co-ordinated to stop DyLighted, but unfortunately we couldn’t get it working! Still a very fun game! Pleasure playing with you dude!

I think players who are more pleasant to play with tend to be better players;. Maybe because they are more likely to get trades.

@@wakelamp I don’t know man. I’ve played against some real nasty people that win too. The only reason I’m nice is because it makes me enjoy the game more and hopefully the players I’m playing with too.

Seeing first player skipping 10 5 9 double wheat ore was a little weird but not crazy... Seeing all three players skip it is INSANE! Can anyone explain why no one seemed to want that spot???
No telling what red was thinking. He didn’t talk, and his spot doesn’t fit any of the common heuristics for either new or experienced players.
It doesn’t set you up for all five resources. It’s not high production. It doesn’t point towards a relevant port strategy. It doesn’t set you up for a road game since there’s no obvious pairing with brick. No clue what he was thinking.
Based on what black wrote he was thinking wood was valuable for some reason??? There were two high producing wood spots, one of which was already rose by red, so I’m not sure why he thought that. Also wood has to go with brick every time, and there was no easily accessible brick on this board. Seemed obvious there would be a glut of wood, not a scarcity.

When i saw the board i would never imagined that you as 4th would get those spots. Yikes.

I wish I had a button that I could press each time Dylan talks bad about a dev card he just popped, and replace that card with a knight. Surely he would think twice before undervaluing his cards, if he knew that it would give us the option to replace them with cards of our choice!

Why not road building to the wheet port? The brick can be handy since no one has better brick and the wheet port would be huge. Also the 8 wheel 4 sheep can be great in the future 8:38
I won a 3 wood 3 ore initial placement in 1v1. By a mile too. Was great.
I was going to say you must've started on a wood/ore port or the very least a 3:1 port.. Obviously with 3 hexes producing means they were land-locked placements so you didn't even have that.. At the very start at least, your numbers must've absolutely been hitting without 7'ing out (2-player helps here albeit) or the other player was just mindlessly taking trades with you.. Either way though, no doubt the other player wasn't a good player. Being on only wood/ore means there HAD to have been some pretty killer spots for the other player.. All bordering wheat/ore tiles or wood/brick tiles would be left wide open surely with some very high-producing spots; not to mention the ports would've all been free if the layout of the board made it a powerful option for starting placements (rare). You started with miniscule capabilities for expansion on top of having zero dev card game as a safety net, what the hell was the other player doing?
I would've liked watching that game live, no way should you have won that without some serious consecutive strokes of luck and/or (likely and) a very weak opponent.
@@ballaking1000 I took a screenshot of the board 8/5/10 and 8/4/10 starting spots for me, and had both wood and ore 2:1 quickly enough to snowball a lead. I recall getting a settle before, so just really lucky rolls. There were no trades with the other player, but I’d say they made some pretty bad decision.
But it was a super interesting game being locked out of so many resources at the start.
VPs 2 road buildings 4 knights, just enough to get the army. Cant ask for anything more

i think mainly he didnt need to; he had all his important settle spots secured. also it’s quite hard for white to build settles. blue also wasn’t too big of a threat army wise i think at that point. rather to save the road building, which got him the win
I was wondering this as well. City on double wheat, road settle to an 8 wheat it should have been considered, but then again, trading the sheep at 3:1 as well as wheat a 3:1 is maybe better?
at 14:50 ish you say black needs to play rb, however you already got both of them
I don't understand why you went to the 3:1 port and not ploughed blue to the wheat port which you have a ton of.
Two reasons I can think of.
The first is that he had identified black as his biggest competitor, so it was more important to cut him off than blue. More wood does nothing for black, so it basically denies a settle.
Second, the 3:1 port is probably slightly better than the wheat port in terms of average production.
If he takes the wheat port he has 10 ore, 16 wheat, and 19 sheep production points. Porting the extra wheat gives an average of 12 ore, 12 wheat, and 19 sheep. Since the focus is dev cards, that’s an effective 12 points each that can go towards dev cards with the extra 7 sheep points doing nothing.
If he takes the 10 ore 3:1 port, he would have 13 ore, 16 sheep, and 13 sheep. That’s 13 points that can be put towards dev cards on average. Not to mention that the extra sheep can be ported if necessary.
These are substantially similar numbers, but the edge still goes to the 10 ore.
Combined with the fact that black is the threat, I think it makes sense to cut of black here.

@@SpencerTwiddy that set up was so insane, he wouldve won even without a port. But thinking only result-oriented doesnt get you long-term success. Im sure the wheat port had a higher EV

red bot placed and blundered with road placements otherwise it wasn't too bad for them.
Why not play the knight before the turn at 6:51? First, you were blocked anyway, but second, it would've put you at 9 cards with a guaranteed city in hand even if you did roll the 7.
I think he either wanted to keep the knight to defend 10 ore or didn't see this option.. I watched the game to the end now so don't remember which cards others have in their hands but in case you'd be likely to steal an ore after 7ing out, I'd also roll first.
He explains his rationale at 5:22 - wants to save it for when his ore gets blocked. Still has 4 sheep whereas that's blue's only sheep resource

If red had not taken 4 9 11 as his second pick, you and blue would have had nearly the exact same setup. Of course your starting cards are better though

Your numbers rolled WAAAAAAY above expectation, especially 3 and 10, which both rolled early a ton and pretty much gave you the game. 6 only rolled twice in 52 rolls? Without good rolls this setup isn’t going to do nearly as well because the numbers kind of suck.
But you could say that about literally every setup. It doesn't matter if you're on a 12 or a 6, wood/brick or ore/wheat/sheep...if your number doesn't roll, you're going to fall behind. Dylighted had 6 different possible numbers to keep up production, but no one can control what the dice does.
Something has to roll and the only ore numbers were 3 and 10 so if he doesn’t get ore nobody gets ore and he’d just port the excess other cards
This is not a coincidence. Dylan simply avoids uploading games that he lost horribly because of bad luck. So you can expect that the dice distribution will be favorable for him in the majority of the uploaded games, because of the selection bias.
I think you need to redo your intro for the series, you're not exactly on a brand new account for this season.
8:04, I don't understand the decision to use the knight after instead of before buying the dev cards. If the knight gives you an ore, you would have the city. Seems like a near strictly worse move, since no dev you can draw makes the decision to use the knight all that much better or worse (no knight draws and you prefer to keep, but chance of that is low and isn't that awful)
