I love the way you played the song, you seem to have emphasized some second guitar parts that really added a nice personal touch. Also it’s crazy how relaxed you are when playing this song, awesome job man !
The thing you absolutely nailed is the rythmic placement of the parts. For example the Arpeggio Section in the intro or the Triplet Rythm Parts you played in the middle register. It is not easy to master those parts, especially at that speed. Congratulations, I hope I will be able to play this song this well at the end of 2017. Keep it up :) Best wishes from Germany!
Petrucci's such an elegant guitar composer, wildly fast parts but never speed for speed's sake always with a purpose. And the rhythm parts at the chorus and the ending, just perfect. You've nailed it Nonato, thx!
This is hands down the most impressive cover I have seen. That song is 13 freaking minutes and there aren't many parts for you to relax and lose focus for even a moment. I can't imagine how much skill and patience it requiered for you to nail it. Just unbelievable. Also, that cover makes me want a 7 string soo badly but I'm afraid that the B string is going to be in the way when playing 6 string songs. What's your opinion on that?
Ohh bro thank you very much. I Don't think that the seven string guitar will be a problem for you to play six string songs, unless you are used to play with you left hand thumb on fretboard like John Mayer or Tommy Emmanuel.
its actually not that hard to keep the 7th string muted. depending on where you're playing. either your palm can mute it well along with your right index finger if you're on the 6th
Def get a 7 string. I started playing them pretty much exclusively around 13 years ago. After the first week or two of playing it and getting used to it, I never found the B string in the way when I was doing 6 string chugging/chords.
I recommend the Ytse Yam video from him as well. one of the first videos I saw from him. Or the Overture one. @ Nonato I wonder how you achive that voluminous fat sound - at that speed. When Im becoming faster I always have the feeling that I havnt enough time when pressing the string to let the string vibrate proper, you know what I mean? Or do yo compensat that with reverb? Sorry for asking so direct XP
@@endeshaw1000 I would say that it's not only a technical problem. When it comes to the guitar tone, the technique is important, but guitar tone also. At the time I recorded this video I was using a POD HD500 which had a decent nice, crispy and defined distortion sound. Like a good mesa boogie. Also consider the quality of the guitar pickups. It will make a huge difference regarding the definition of the tone. Sorry for the late answer!
That smile and breather at the end... I surely can tell how hard this song is and the length of this song is super long which makes you tired... But you nailed it man! That was phenomenal!
Im a Dream Theater fan since over 20 years but I bought this CD just because of this intro of that Song XD especially from 1:25 when it starts kicking. Thanks for that video :)
holy cow first time seeing this. my god. u fuckin killed it bro. this is how to play guitar!! edit: wanted to add, youre relaxed, well practiced, notes are all in tune and align well with the backing trackl.. and the difficulty level required to pull this off so flawlessly is ridiculous. i commend you sir, great job and i'd award you if i could! :)
Man, so much respect for trying this one out... kind of a huge challenge in one shot. Very impressive and cannot imagine the work you must have put into this before getting it right. Congrats, this is amazing. Cheers from France :)
+Vastug wow, thanks a lot. Yeah, it has been a long journey to learn and to record this song in only one shot... but I think that everything went just fine. I did my best! Thank you so much! Greetings from Brazil!
Superb man!!! I think you should make another video with JP’s guitars isolated.. that will be awesome! You just made me wanna learn this song bcos u are so relaxed executing this song!
@@nonatomusic Can you give me a little advice? i've been playing arround like 15 years atm, but i have trouble to remember all the little parts from a long riff. How's the best way to remember long phrases and long riffs like the ending of this song, for example?
@@AbelTana I like to study by chunks. I repeat every single chunk of a long riff or phrase as slow as possible. Also I usually start by the last chunk, because normally it is what we may practice less. After becoming comfortable with each slowly played chunk, you can try to join couples of chunks and repeat the same process (from the last one, until the beginning. I do like this and works for me, I believe you can try this approach. Maybe using this strategy you can improve your "fingering memory". Besides that, I do recommend you to listen a lot the parts that you're studying and try to sing, even if you're not a singer (I'm not too...). This can help you to memorize in another way, more deep, more musical.I hope that this can help you! Have a nice day!
+GoodSirBanzo it's a very simple lick, but done fast. It is totally based on the blues minor scale (Bm). I'll try to write the intervals that I play in order: (P1-m7-p5-a4-p5). This group of intervals I play 4x I think... I hope that this can help. ;-)
I'm learning this song for a performance with a group of friends and I'm using your video to learn it. Really amazing work my friend! One day I really would love to be able to sweep pick that clean. Do you mind me asking what kind of pickups you had in the guitar?
That's awesome my friend! I'm glad you are having this video as a resource. That's pretty cool to know! Thank you so much. This is the original pickups of this guitar which is an Ibanez RG 7321. 😁👍
You can see the first seconds how he's preparing himself mentally for whats coming
Oh yeah... After lots of failed takes all the time that I restarted the song from beginning I take a deep breath and try to relax.
XD

Hey man thanks a lot! I was so focused into the song that I play almost frozen... Thank you so much for watching. ;-)
You killed it man! Those sweeps in the intro were so well done, one day I hope I can do them as well as you
You'll do it too. Just keep practicing!

Thanks a lot my friend! Oh yeah, it's a very difficult song to play. I was working a lot to play each part as best as I can. Thanks again!
Stumbled across this while looking for the song but y'know, I think I want a guitar now
Man you'll get the guitar and want to learn Petrucci stuff, you will give up the guitar, that guy makes me want to give up on playing eveyday.

hey, what amp and what guitar are u using?
I used a Pod HD500x via usb connection. No real amp.
Is that an Ibanez or a luthier marked?
This is an Ibanez RG7321 with slight modifications. I added a Floyd Rose system and a scalloped fretboard with my Luthier.
