      as far as Arturian mythos goes it's the Roman Britons defending the land, & in the later Roman times often armies raised out of Britain playing key parts within the greater Roman Empire, though the loss of the Druid is perhaps one of the great losses in human history because of the history they may of kept alive through oral tradition otherwise.

      My mother does the same thing. Drives me crazy sometimes. Like you don't have to say it every two seconds, maybe once every five.. please? I'm Finnish btw, and its not a thing over here, I don't think. But acknowledging or showing that you're at least listening to what a person has to say is definitely good manners, in my book.

      hasmatiks I’m Chinese and it’s not the norm for me and my family. I’ve noticed the difference between Japanese style and Koreans. Japanese is a short acknowledging feel but mmm every word you say felt a little mockingly. If it’s the Korean style, it’ll be like mhhmmmm mhmmmmmmmm mhmmmmmmmm, super drawned out and annoying.
      The passenger I drove for the Korean I was talking to mhmmmmmmmmm mhmm mhmmmmm mhmmmmmmmmmm, wait for 3 seconds then answer.

    • @nealsterling8151
      @nealsterling8151 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the books say basically nothing about that iirc. Only some fans assumed the elves having straight swords. Since i started being a tolkien fan when i first saw the movies i had no preconceived opinon about that. But i think it's not such a bg deal as some "fans" make it look like, Peter Jackson could have made much bigger mistakes if he wheren't such a big Tolkien fan himself.
      (Just imagine LotR being made today by a super political correct committee of executives... yucks)

    • @duchessskye4072
      @duchessskye4072 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know they say nothing, and do they even say anything about weapons in general? I've always associated elves with spears... It's weird I know
      Well PJ is also kind of politically correct, but definitely not as bad as it could have been

    • @nealsterling8151
      @nealsterling8151 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as i know Tolkien only mentions Swords and parts of elven Armies using spears and the usual Medieval weapons in the Silmarillion imo.
      There is one example of a Elven King using a named Spear though, but i never considered this to be something unique imo.

  • @MrManifolder
    @MrManifolder 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great Video. Here are some other points to consider.
    1. *The biggest difference between Japanese and Western polearms is their construction.*
    *Western polearms,* in general, use a single piece of wood for the haft and the blade/head is secured to the haft via long flat strips of metal extending from the head which are riveted to the shaft. *Japanese polearms,* in general, use a haft consisting of a laminated composite with a wood core and bamboo exterior which is covered in many layers of flexible (and shock-absorbing) lacquer. The haft is then reinforced with metal rings, bands, and wire wrap. The head is attached to the haft via a long tang running down the middle, i.e. a portion of the haft is hollowed out and secured to the head with a very tightly fitting peg which required a tool to remove.
    Additionally, western spear tips tend to have symmetric/diamond-like cross sections and often terminate at a very fine point, which is good for finding gaps in armor; whereas Japanese spear tips mostly have triangular-ish cross sections, which are very rigid, and tend to have broader points, which are less likely to be deformed by an accidental blow to an armored surface.
    2. *The biggest difference between samurai armored combat and knightly armored combat is in their use of cavalry.*
    *The 15th/16th century knight* used his polearm (a lance) couched under one arm and charged into the enemy, delivering a devastating shock attack, after which general melee would ensue. The knight's big armored horse provided extra weight in the initial charge and an elevated armored platform to continue with the melee combat. The knight's own heavy high-coverage armor made him virtually blade-proof in close quarters, but its bespoke geometry/construction allowed the knight to fight with unrestricted range of movement. Later on, firearms were used as well.
    *Japanese cavalry tactics (in the Sengoku period)* are believed to have mostly focused on general combat, but not on any particular specialized maneuver, like the charge. Some samurai had hooks on their breastplates where they attached the horse's reins, allowing them to wield their weapons with both hands while steering the horse with their knees or by swaying their body left or right, as witnessed by Florentine merchant Fancesco Carletti (I can provide a reference if desired). The samurai stirrup covered the entire bottom of the foot, allowing the rider to stably stand up while riding and fighting. Thus, a samurai equipped with a yari (or other long weapon) could take a vicious two-handed swing at an opponent's helmet, like a baseball player, without falling off his mount. Such a strike would likely concuss even an armored opponent. Initially, the most popular mounted primary weapon was the bow and arrow, but later branched out into various two-handed weapons (yari, nodachi, tetsubo, etc.) or arquebus.
    Japanese horses were small, but extremely powerful climbers and swimmers. In the battle of Ichi No Tani, Yoshitsune lead a successful cavalry charge down a steep cliff-like incline to surprise a Taira fortress, one of few recorded charges in Japanese history, but which was only possible due to the tough little horses. An example of the Japanese horse's swimming prowess occurred during the battle of Yashima, when samurai Nasu No Yoichi (who was fully armored) rode his horse out into the Seto Inland Sea in order to shoot a fan from the mast of a Taira ship with his bow, which the Taira had challenged his army to try. Thanks to their horses and their own ability to swim in armor, most rivers, except those with raging currents, were not a significant obstacle for mounted samurai.
    The important thing to remember is that knights and samurai, like any elite feudal warrior, had a wide variety of equipment, training in a given skill set, and wealth. Thus, not all knights were armored from head to toe, and not all samurai could ride a horse with no hands. Therefore, all generalities are to be treated as trends and not as absolutes.

    • @MrManifolder
      @MrManifolder 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is the quote on samurai horsemanship I mentioned:
      "And when they are fighting they tie, or attach, the bridles to their breast and control the movements of the horse by swaying their persons this way and that, leaving their hands free for the management of their weapons, which are arquebuses, spears and bows and arrows. They also make use of those scimitars of theirs of which they always wear two or three, stuck in their girdles, one being larger than the other and made in the fashion of a sword, and the other smaller in the shape of a poniard, but all alike being curved in shape and with only a single edge."
      -Francesco Carletti (1573 - 1636, Florentine merchant, explorer, an writer)
      This quote comes from page 223 (an excerpt labeled "Horsemanship") from the book "They Came to Japan: An Anthology of European Reports on Japan, 1543-1640," edited by Michael Cooper (ISBN 0-939512-73-4).

    • @danielelseth4106
      @danielelseth4106 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very helpful, but 1. I’m skeptical about ALL Japanese pole weapons being lacquered and wrapped in metal. Sounds very expensive for the average soldier.
      2. The Japanese samurai WERE trained in a specific tactic, which Metatron as spoken of often: archery, which you need both hands for (and is mentioned in your provided quote).
      3 if at all possible, a knight would avoid getting stuck in a melee; once they’ve lost momentum they’re surprisingly vulnerable to footmen.
      4 Lastly, any proper war lance would be designed and constructed to last more than one use; the common idea of lances shattering on impact comes from jousting, and those ones are designed to break relatively easily.

    Matt is wrong about thrusting with a falx over a shield. He is thinking only forward motion for the thrust like a rapier. With a falx you can do a rotate motion that matches the falx curve and it will indeed thrust into whatever is on the other side of the shield. It won't be a devastating thrust past the shield but wounding if there's no armor. Though a wound can guarantee you win and the more you can inflict the higher the chance of a win.
    Also a falx is an excellent thrusting weapon when there is no shield. Again you have to create the arc in your thrust, your thrust is almost a cut swing and you are not thrusting straight on but from an angle. Since they have a really long handle you can swing it for a cut then use the handle to pivot it for a thrust bringing the tip onto the target at a 90 degree angle or if your curve on the falx matches your natural cutting arc so the point is at 90 degrees you can do a cut or thrust with the same exact motion.
    This is why he is wrong about any curved blade being useless for a thrust. If they could not thrust then there would be no point in putting a sharp point on the tip Better would be a quarter circle if it was cut only. It wouldn't be a rapier thrust but an arc thrust so the point contacts at 90 degrees. Any straight blade would suck at an arc thrust but a curved blade could have more power behind the thrust than any rapier because the thrust would have more momentum. Any saber he sells regardless of curve can be thrusted by holding it in a hammer grip and swinging like a cut regardless of blade curve by simply adjusting your wrist so the point is forward in the arc.

      Well axes are rare weapon in general if you don't account halberds/pollaxes etc. Even in Europe.
      They were used extensively in the early middle ages but not as much as spear.
      In the article there is a brief explanation why they weren't mainstream in Japan!

    Raf, I am surprised that you didn't take the challenge of the name as it's from an old Latino poem I read years ago. Eques de Ventus Occasus. I was told by the man who owed the book it was a reference to the horseman who rode the pale horse. (Or was it simply more fun to watch poor Matt try ecclesiastical Latin?)

    On the kabutowari thing (the cut done to the kabuto), it was meant as a skill test for the kenshi, not be used in a combat, although you can try.
    Also, on the topic of jujitsu/wrestling in samurai armor, there was something called yoroi doshi, which was a kind of dagger for that kind of situations.

    Seeing you two in the same video is amazing! I have a question, I'm not sure which of you to address too. I think you have both played Kingdom Come: Deliverence. Could either of you talk about the games "combat jacket"? The game prides itself on accuracy and I have never seen this, other than surcoats, which are different. Apparently, this is second layer of gambeson, worn over the metal layer, mainly for fashion, but some added cloth layer. Seems like a fiction invention, as anyone who could afford it would probably show their own colors, correct?

    Adding to that sword-handle-equal-length weapon category, some Falxes were probably around those proportions, but its cousin weapon the Rhomphaia (more popular in Thrace than Dacia) seems to have had those proportions almost universally. From what I understand the Rhomphaia may have been used at some points in the Byzantine Empire, though there's some debate on whether that was the Rhomphaia of the Thracians or a mislabelling of a different weapon.

    Considering bald vs long hair in combat:
    there is a written account from the time of the First Serbian Uprising (Feb 14, 1804 - Oct 7, 1813), telling us about the leader of the rebellion, Karađorđe (Turkish for "Black George") ordering all Serbian freedom fighters to shorten their hair, because the long hair that was popular among the Serbs gave a clear advantage to the Turks in hand to hand combat. (In a free translation, the Serbs were often grabbed for their braided hair by the Turks while saber and yataghan fighting, and that was described as "much punishing").
    This order was so unpopular amongst the freedom fighters, that it even caused a small rebellion on its own, that ended with Karađorđe mounting a military force and forcefully haircutting the unwilling long haired fighters.

    You missed one rather iconic polearm that predates much of the Japanese and European weapons listed off, the Chinese dagger-axe or gē.
    Would've liked to hear some thoughts on this curious weapon as it would appear the Chinese manufactured it in isolation and seemingly without particularly specialized employment of it given its proliferation in an era of Chinese warfare that was largely centered on infantrymen lacking substantial armour.

    I would say if you want to see how the gladius would react to history, look at the development of Byzantine weaponry. Same people, same weaponry, other half of the empire. It wouldn’t be exact but its a decent historical example.
