    You actually put some effort to speak Bahasa with the locals. I appreciated it. I watched some vloggers that came here over and over again and I rarely heard them speak Bahasa. Some are just kind of mocking "bla bla bla I don't know what they're saying" when there's a language barrier.

    Cucumber mean ketimun or indonesian love to shorten some words, it's timun. Lol
    The one you ate was lupis, it contains of sticky rice with coconut sprinkes and brown sugar syrup. The one that taste like panecake was serabi or surabi, it was made by coconut and rice flour i think, with some brown sugar syrup.
    The best way to eat nasi padang is with your hand bro, no spoon or fork needed. Feel the sensation with your barely hand, after you wash it first off course 😂😂.
    For vegetarian, you can order tempe, tahu ( made from soya bean), some jackfruit soup (sayur nangka), perkedel (fried potatoes), and eggs if you like.
    If you want to take some food away, just say "aku mau nasi dibungkus"
    If you want to order only the curry chicken, you can say "aku mau kuah kari ayam"
    Bravo guys

    I'd suggest trying rendang if you're keen on it. Super popular, literally the star of padang restaurants (to some people). it's braised meat in tons of spices for hoursss.
    I'm no expert but the desserts you were trying are:
    - the pancake looking one: surabi or serabi. Rice flour pancake served with kinca (the sauce made of palm sugar) sometimes with durian kinca
    - rice cake in coconut: kue lupis. Indeed made of sticky rice, coated in shredded coconut served with palm sugar syrup
    - the square "jelly" top: kue talam. made of coconut milk, tapioca flour, rice flour for the white part and added palm sugar for the brown part
    - the pancake in plastic: not sure I thought surabi too?
    - the banana leaf wrapped: I guess somekind of lemet ? I have no idea hehe

    There are a lot of vegetarian option in Masakan Padang. You can say "saya mau hanya sayur" means "i want only vegetables". They can give you casava leaves with coconut milk. It is super delicious.

  • @fransfrancois6233
    @fransfrancois6233 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually, most Padang restaurants serve jackfruit curry and cassava leaves (cooked in coconut milk) for free.
    And the desert with two layers actually coconut pudding on top and the sticky rice cooked with brown sugar on the bottom.
    Oh, and you missed the international best food which is Rendang.
    Cucumber = Timun (tea-moon)
    Delicious = Enak
    Very Delicious = Sangat Enak (sung-ut

    Late comment, the best way to eat local food is with your bare hands (right hand recommended), spoon and fork just optional.
    Cucumber = ketimun/timun
    Cake in plastic = Kue Talam, palmy sticky rice and coconut cream above. The triangle ones is Lupis with palm sugar.
    Enjoy your vacation

    Mark, the white brown cake if you're still curious, the white part made from coconut milk added with anlittle bit of salt (that's why the taste kinda savoury) & the brown part made from casava (singkong yes..not kingkong) + sugar.

    Hi, what a nice video, I hope you enjoy your adventure in Indonesia, but here the thing you should know is, we use fork in left hand to help arrange the food onto the spoon in right hand before it goes into the mouth, but I suggest you to eat by hand when you go to Padang food restaurant, that's how we eat it traditionally :)

    The Dessert you ate:
    5:10 Surabi/serabi, yes basically it's a pancake there're plenty of variations throughout Indonesia and this is the common one, made from rice flour, soaked in with palm sugar mixed with coconut milk.
    6:23 Lupis, made from sticky rice soaked in pandan water hence the green color, with coconut shred sprinkle and palm sugar/brown sugar syrup not maple, because maple syrup is uncommon here, mostly we use palm sugar or brown sugar.
    7:25 Honestly I'm not sure what's the name of this one because there are too many variations to this similar dessert but mostly we call it "Kue Lapis Ketan", the white jelly-like top of it made from coconut milk and the bottom is made from sticky rice mixed with palm sugar, there's also a variation where the top part (the coconut jelly part) is mixed with palm sugar to make it sweeter and the sticky rice part is natural white with a bit savory taste.
    8:12 Apam/Apem, yup it's basically another pancake also made from rice flour and coconut milk, there're also so many variations of this dessert with so many shape, there's one like cupcake, muffins or even brownies, so yeah maybe if you visited another region you'll find similar cake/dessert with similar name but quite different taste throughout Indonesia, it's pretty unique, the one you ate commonly known as Apem Panggang Jawa.
    8:40 Nagasari/Pais Pisang, depends on the region we have so many name of this one but since I'm from Borneo we call it pais pisang, in central and east Java they call it nagasari, basically it's steamed rice flour mixed with coconut milk and with sliced banana.
    Cucumber = Timun/Mentimun = die Gurke

    Best desert on this place is "bubur kampiun" or can be translated to "champion porridge", its actually more like muesli made from flour which has some additional toppings. And its fully vegetarian. You can find it in some other Minang/Padang restaurant.
    Best dishes in Bopet Mini for me is "ayam bakar" grilled chicken and beef rendang, they have that smoky flavour that came from "arang batok" coconut shell charcoal they use.

  • @RePhantomz
    @RePhantomz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    We rarely used maple syrup beside on foreign or fusion dish. As for traditional desert, we mostly used brown sugar either melted, crushed or even powdered. Even the bottom part of yours rice puding is also made from brown sugar.

    Next time when both of u come again to 'warung padang' u can order nasi+sayur 'nangka' aka. jackfruit or 'daun singkong tumbuk' aka. mashed cassava leaves+'perkedel kentang' aka. potato fritters+'terong balado' aka. aubergine/eggplant w/ red chili sauce for Lara and they also served 'telur dadar' aka. omelette.
    I would recommend u to try Rawon Soup (beef soup w/ dark nutty broth originating from Surabaya-EastJava) and Makassar-SouthSulawesi cuisine like Coto Makassar (beef soto variant w/ nutty×spices seasoned broth), Konro Bakar (grilled beef ribs served with peanut sauce×broth) ask the vendor to served only meat version coz on their menu they also served innards or meat×fat version.enjoy ur meals

    what Lara ate (the one that has 2 layers) is "kue(cake) wajik(diamond-shaped)".
    the one that Lara said "maple syrup" actually that was brown sugar sauce (it is a common sauce for may dessert in Indonesia). Some people also call it "Java Sugar"
