I was an engineer for CP Air in the seventies and eighties, I was based in Vancouver...thank you for this beautiful video ...it brings back many happy and nostalgic memories for me as many of the aircraft in your video I have worked on and flown in......What Happy Times these years were.
I arrived from Ireland on CP Air to YYZ/Toronto, Canada when I was four - 1972/a 747. From that time I see images really; a big hole in the clouds possibly over the Atlantic Ocean, maybe. I went back home on a DC8 in 1980, and have often wished that we had the cams and vids that we have today, For I remember everything in my head as it happened then. I remember those beautiful orange and red CP birds so clearly from my youth, and it makes me sad that they are no more. Thank you for this - truly.
Good video!! I was lucky enough to fly 1st class on a CP Air DC10-30 from LGW to YVR when I was 16, back in 1981. It was a truly great experience - big fat white leather seats and continous service throughout the flight.
When I was 8 years old, our family flew C.P.A. immigrating to Canada from New Zealand. Flying on a DC-8 aircraft (The Empress Of Amsterdam) (in the colours of the ones in the video from 3:50-4:15) to Fiji, then to Honolulu, spending a day in Waikiki, then on a CPA DC-8 (The Empress of Rome) ariving in Vancouver June/1967. I'm 50 now and it brings back fond memories to see the pictures of those old airliners in the video. C.P.Air was a great airline. I miss them.
Canadian Pacific was the holding company for CP Rail, CP Air, CP Ships, CP Trucking, CP Hotels and some resource companies. These were later spun off as independents. CP Air became "Canadi>n", and was later absorbed into Air Canada.
Seems mad that this could make me cry if I let it. Yes - a great airline, great memories of London Gatwick to Toronto in the 70's and watching the CP jets coming in low over the Keele and Finch area in the back garden of my in-laws drinking Labatts Blue and sun bathing. Thanks for posting.
- I watched them from arrive from Driftwood Avenue; just to the south-east of Jane & Finch, my friend. Flying on thier south-west route to RW 23. I spend hours in my room as a child as they flew over; and it was priceless!
While working with AN/SYD who ground handled CP on its sched services into SYD. A/C DC8S ops Fri/Sun CP301 YVR/HNL/NAN/SYD a/c and crew overnighted and ops CP302 SYD/NAN/HNL/YVR. I was fortunate to rcv complementary tickets from CP - i got to fly on the DC8, DC8S, B737. My 1st 747 flight way back in 1975 on CP - YVR/HNL, C FCRD(?) "Empress of Australia" I loved listening to those engines starting up. thanks for a great video Neil Donohoe - Cairns australia
I really enjoyed flying CP and Canadian, good people, you try a little harder when you’re #2. The big orange 747’s looked pretty incredible taking off. The Canadian 747’s with the big C and red cheat line were special also. Excellent video, Good memories
I remember those orange jets & this is a reminder of how great they looked. The dc-10 was awesome & ofcourse the 747 was stunning. Seeing this has motivated me to
Great airline. I remember seeing a CP Air 747 ✈ landing at Newcastle (NCL) airport in the 70's, just a few weeks before I actually flew to Toronto on a DC8 ✈ That was my first 'big flight'' Later I flew on several long-haul trips, but the first is always well remembered.
I loved my first flight on CP Air in 1986. Went to Vancouver from Ottawa and return for Expo 86. I kept alot of stuff from the flight that has CP Air logos on it....including the utencils! I miss those orange Boeing 737's bigtime. I wish I got one pic of them when I was a kid before they disappeared.
Mom's favourite colours were orange-red, but she meant in a flower. I wish i could have shown her a CP Air plane, but i didn't have youtube at the time and i tore up all my books on north America years ago
Great airline !! I remember training as a jr. traffic clerk at in 1971 at YVR airport's office and staying at the Skyline Hotel close to airport....great fun!!
@VenomousVitality This picture was on a company calendar. The photographer made a mistake and thought he had to airbrush the extra engines in. No such plane ever existed, but the calendar remained a conversation piece.
Regarding the airbrushed extra engines at 6:08 on the 727: the photographer probably mistook/misunderstood the open thrust reverser clam shell doors on #2 as "two" engines, which led him to believe there was one missing outboard one. However, a 727 with 5 engines did exist, although briefly (see Jodie Foster movie: "Contact") where they added an engine to make a 727 look like a Russian Airliner!
I can't remember where I got this piece, so sorry I can't help you there. If you download the video, there is editing software to isolate the music if you need to. There are TH-cam downloader programs. I use this one found on Google from altervista
@bearpaw72 Wing section is also a factor. The F104 fighter has a thin wing but not a lot of sweep-back. Speed of sound depends on temperature, increasing with temperature.
- The B-727 at 6:08; do you know if this was an experimental aircraft at all? It's seems so unique to see the world's first five-engine commercial aircraft. I always loved the T-Tails, and they are so far and few between now. And as you know; great video!
- And as you know, my friend; I completely adore this video. What I was wondering, is what musical score you put this to? I would love to have that as well.
Until late 1986, when CP Ltd. sold the airline to Pacific Western Airlines, based in Calgary. From April 1987 the airline became Canadian Airlines International Ltd., which operated until 2001 when Air Canada took it over.
The dc10 with the expo paint job on it was a series 10 note it had no centre gear landing wheels they would swap there series 30 with United airlines every year for seasonal work air Canada did with there L1011 s with eastern used to see eastern L1011s all the time in Toronto with air Canada titles on them
Ha !!!!! I remember the premier of Quebec saying to the first nations in an racial tone...."INDIANS CANT RUN AN AIRLINE BUSINESS " after that an white operated airline cp and Quebec air went bankrupt....and air cree first nations air service still flying for over 30 years ...karma !!!

It was nice to see the DC8... flew from Santa Maria Azores to Montreal on 1966.
Was just a little kid then but still remember the flight.

R.I.P Canadian Airlines for serving us a great time on your flight. In Memories with the Canadian soilders and planes.
Great airline !! I remember training as a jr. traffic clerk at in 1971 at YVR airport's office and staying at the Skyline Hotel close to airport....great fun!!
The Skyline and the world are much changed since then. I stayed at the Airport Skyline December 1966.
Worked for Cp Air from 1966 to 1987.....Then Canadian Airlines....best years of my life.

Wonderfully put together
Opening photo was taken at YXY.

Wing section is also a factor. The F104 fighter has a thin wing but not a lot of sweep-back. Speed of sound depends on temperature, increasing with temperature.
Actually, the Canadair aircraft called the C-4 was called the DC-4M, often called the North Star. BOAC also used it and called it the "Argonaut."
The DC-8's wings were swept back only 23-or-so degrees. How did it even reach the sound barrier? (Speed of sound must be slower than I thought).
Cool video. I didn't know CP had a airline division. I like the photo at 6:40.
Thank you, I wanted to share my fond memories as well.

cp rail is cp air too?
Those were the years I was flying that route, so may have met him.
- And as you know, my friend; I completely adore this video. What I was wondering, is what musical score you put this to? I would love to have that as well.
- And as I have commented before in loving this video; what is the music score that you have put it to, my friend? I would love to have that as well.
Remember CP Air from the late 70s and the 80s, great flights and service.

2:22 My dad flew cansos for Transair. A very historic aircraft and at 8:15 Midwest airlines Bell 204's.
where did u get the pic at 0:32
Yes, of course. My mistake.
Was the 5-engine Boeing 727 pictured here real?
@bearpaw72 mach 1 is just over 1225 km/h but I think thats at sea level
Great vid. CP Air, the airline owned by a Railroad.
Until late 1986, when CP Ltd. sold the airline to Pacific Western Airlines, based in Calgary. From April 1987 the airline became Canadian Airlines International Ltd., which operated until 2001 when Air Canada took it over.
@aeomaster32
Oops, pardon me. You already answered my previous post about the 5-engine 727 in response to VenomousVitality.
...try and find some diecast models with the CP orange/silver paint.
Whitehorse N.T. ?????? You mean the Yukon Territory
Slip of the pen, I flew to Whitehorse Yukon regularly.
How about Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Not Northwest Territory
That is corrected on the first page introduction. I flew up there for years, so it was just a slip up.
The dc10 with the expo paint job on it was a series 10 note it had no centre gear landing wheels they would swap there series 30 with United airlines every year for seasonal work air Canada did with there L1011 s with eastern used to see eastern L1011s all the time in Toronto with air Canada titles on them
