And as for JS, yes, I prefer any Node.js backend rather than PHP, for example, Fastify. PHP used to have really bad reputation for being messy and unmaintainable for big applications. Which is why it's barely used in big companies.
      But today's PHP has evolved. I haven't used it for more than 3 years, but last time I do the version 8 is a fantastic programming language.
      Symfony and Laravel IMO brings a lot of goodies to the language that allows PHP to shine. Without them, we may be stuck with wordpress mess 😂

    I create small uncomplicated web applications full-time. I came to PHP when a tech suggested that if I converted a Perl app to PHP it could go on the website. Never heard of PHP. That was a Friday. Monday morning I had the app rewritten in PHP. Never wrote another line of Perl. My world is small, I live in PHP, JavaScript, SQL, CSS and create tools for my use in a half-dozen other languages. All my PHP and all my JavaScript are object-oriented. Transitioning from MySQL to MariaDB and to using PDO in PHP made me feel "modern"...Ha !!! I am very happy with the world in which I live...For me, PHP is a true family member.

    good video but there were some minor errors unless I misinterpreted. php 7 did not introduce exception handling, it improved it. it allowed errors to come in as exceptions, improved error hierarchy and introduced the "finally" keyword try/catch blocks. However, try/catch blocks were introduced in php 5 with its improvements with OOP. php 4 did have some built in ways to protect from xss and sql injection like addslashes and strip_tags but the comprehensive solution PDO was introduced in php version 5.1. I have been writing php since version 3 so some things said in this video stood out.

    I really think PHP played an important role in the industry as a development platform. The rage around it, I guess, is not 100% its fault.
    Even though PHP had several limitations, I guess what made people angry about it was the state of the software people developed for it. Even while programming and maintaining many services with ASP 3 classic, I've never had/noticed so much trash code piled up as in PHP. I had to maintain a few PHP systems that were basically 10k+ lines in a single index.php(plus HTML), and yes, I have never seen this with ASP, Java 5, etc. I just can't tell if PHP was the first programming language of many people or it was like an scorched earth strategy from freelancers to hold the projects with them.
    Honestly, I'm really into 're-learning' PHP 8 and always enjoyed working with a few frameworks such as Symfony.

But now days almost every programming language can create a web application easy, even Python can run web app as small as few lines of codes and has another strong point which is datascience and AI. Javascript on the other hand has strong point on the frontend side, while the node js backend also on the same language make it easier to substitute between frontend and backend. Due Memory Safety Concerns, the FBI, along with other U.S. government agencies such as the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), have recently recommended that software developers transition away from memory-unsafe languages by January 1, 2026. The reason for their recommendation is that these languages allow direct manipulation of memory addresses without built-in safeguards. They specifically target C and C++.
    They recommend transitioning to the following languages but surprisingly, PHP is not amongst them:

    There's a 2012 article called "PHP: a fractal of bad design" that really made me want to avoid this thing like the plague. It seems to me the easy languages to choose now are Python, Go, JavaScript. Maybe Rust if you want to go low level.

      It's true, PHP has its place, with many of the "fractal of bad design" problems having fixed, though not all of them. I don't really code much anymore (teach, mostly), but I don't feel like I'd recommend this language to new coders.

    • @Winnetou17
      @Winnetou17 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@modolief I'd still say that PHP is the best for new coders in general, until they get to know better what they want.
      PHP really grows with your knowledge. Starting with it, it's dead simple, no need to include anything, just write directly procedural code. Then you have manual includes.
      Then you can start with classes and autoload. And so on. Really, PHP can be used at all programming levels, which, I think, makes it top 3 good languages for new coders.
      Personally I'd also say that it's syntax is among the cleanest. Perfect balance between terse and verbose. Not too cryptic, not too verbose.

    • @davidfally5449

      php doesn’t need to be asynchronous. as every request uses its own php thread. need to scale php? add more workers in your webserver. need to scale nodejs: run multiple instances behind a load balancer and carefully manage listening ports. i’m not specifically rooting for php, as i usually use C# and Rust, but php makes life easy, when low latency isn’t a strict requirement
