What's your projection on how long this pond will last given that it's being built from wood which will be exposed to outdoor elements such as water and termites? Thank you. Cool build!!!
Jack Nguyen I’m moving house next March so it will last until then most likely, if treated annually and vented underneath then it could last anywhere between 10 & 30+ years I’d estimate but I’m a management consultant not a carpenter so I’d do some research, also I built this to house 4 goldfish that were basically being kept in a shoe box, if you want a serious fish pond that will last for years then you’ll want to look at circulation, drainage and filtration, that can all be built in during the construction, I'm currently filtering the pond with a 60l per minute air pump and a big sponge, although, I’m about to build a box filter as I have some wood and some spare time and I can practice on this pond ready for the next which I’ll probably build from stone, hope this helps 👍
@@Alexander6749 if not sitting directly to ground or if on top of a gravel/drained ground it will outlast some people. if untreated wood give it 4-6 years
How did you attach the liner before putting on the wood trim cap? This is where stuck. I like the way you finished yours so really interested. Thank you!!!
2x4 stud doubled in corners then 8inch next stud then 12inch on centre just over 8 feet square then all of the cladding and screws. I had no plan, just had some free time and energy
The foam in between the frame acts as insulation? Or what's the purpose for that? Really great video although I learned nothing because of the timelapse lol the ending results are amazing.
Big 👍! Hi my friend, nice pond! Keep up the great work! If your interested I always go video for video full watch and big 👍 from the Animal Papa family! Hope you have a great rest of the week! Take care, happy fish keeping and God bless! Animal Papa! 😎🐠❤️👍🙏
No sorry I don't, I had no plan just found a place that sold wood and screws and winged it from there, one of the interesting parts of this project was finding a place that could provide me with wood and screws and then working out how much room I had to build it
Hi it looks pretty solid, well done, just wondering why you had so many layers of wooden sheets be it particle board or plywood in your build and also styrofoam is to prevent freeze up?
Thanks, I've had an air drive sponge over the winter with 5 goldfish in the tank. I will build a pump house in a few weeks when it gets warmer with a bucket of media and waterfall
@@Arks123 lol! 😂 .. just a simple tank, no biggie hehe...It turned out really nice. I need one in my backyard too! I like your 'just doing it' attitude. I'm just knocking out my todo list lately myself. I set up a 55g 3 days ago and moved some rescued silver dollar fish into it. Its looking good. They are definitely happier! But there are only 3 and they are skittish so im getting 6 more. I just want to quarantine the add'l fish 30 days, so i need to set up my other 55 just for quarantine fish. I do like the bigger tanks. I spent an hour just watching them check out the new tank and swim and swim. They had been in a small tank way to small for them. I liked how you insulated the pond. I wish a lot of my projects were fast forward like yours 🙂
MONICA LYNN I’m going to start the build of my fish house behind the pond this Sunday....should be complete by summer fingers crossed, I’m planting a nano 15 gallon tomorrow and should have a video of that next week
+Evan Watanabe the insulation will only really work when I cover the top of the pond during winter months and again only marginally but just enough to prevent freezing
would love to make an outdoor koi pond like this with a tunnel so they could swim indoor during the winter... i don't think the tunnels is possible? any thoughts by anyone? Like a 10" diameter aprox 6' long GIANT PVC pipe or something.
I would say between 400-600 upper (600) was with tools I bought...roughly. I've got 5 goldfish in there with a sponge filter at the moment but I want to build a filter and fountain unit on the back but I can't get any wood at the moment! As soon a s i get some wood I'll finish it 👍
Scott Solar I expect you could go 4ft the stud work was 4 x2 and 12inches on Center. I doubled this on the corners. it ha 12mm ply front and back of the stud frame and then cladded with scaffold boards, it hasn’t moved. If you wanted to go deeper than 4ft I’d start to dig down in to the earth. I had no plan I just built it without much thought.
Having that plywood in contact with the ground will be rotting in a few years. Do not known if marine plywood were use or were the wood sealed. Nice project but it will not last long.

really cool build , Built my pond with cinder blocks figured it would last way longer .
Forget fish pond. I'd build swimming pool with this video. :-D
great idea!

My god man! If you made a DIY video of this it would totally get millions of views 😅
How did you secure the pond liner to the sides of the pond, glue or screws? Thanks
Thank you for sharing! Great build!
Thanks for watching 👍
do you need a wood seal for this kind of wood?
Do you have a nontimelapse version? I want to mimic your every move!
Nice... how does it support all that water?
2x4 stud doubled in corners then 8inch next stud then 12inch on centre just over 8 feet square then all of the cladding and screws. I had no plan, just had some free time and energy
How’s it holding up?
Why did you put tempex in the inside of the frame, the white stuff. Im geussing for the water temperature
David Wonder yes, it’s a level of insulation, in the winter I have covers over the top, without covering the top insulation would be minimal
Is it all depending on the black plastic sheet to hold the water tight? What if there’s some scratch or poke a hole? The pond will leak right?
The foam in between the frame acts as insulation? Or what's the purpose for that? Really great video although I learned nothing because of the timelapse lol the ending results are amazing.
yes the foam is insulation however the top must be covered in the winter to achieve any real benefit, thanks for watching sorry it didn't help you

What’s was the total cost of just materials for the build?
Hi @Thomas Stiglic about $600 so I saved around 50% on a store bought equivalent here in the U.K.
