You have just explained what people want to hear. It's hard to find all the information needed and you have covered it all in simple terms. I pitty all those that have to go through this farce as I have grandfather rights but still think over 21 the entitlement should be automatic.

A useful guide. Everyone should go on and do a larger vehicle test, if just to appreciate the differences a bus or lorry driver has to compensate for - and to learn some new road craft.

Congrats on passing your C1. Lucky me I'm that old to have the former licence and am already allowed to drive up to 7.5 tons. However - if I'd really have to drive a HUGE one, I might take some lessons just to make sure I could handle it and not be of danger to anyone out on the streets. Suggestions on why you took your test....? .... maybe you've had some offers on trying out some of those "beasts" and vlog about it? Wouldn't want to miss that!

Great video explanation, even for those that don't need it. Well done. And also gives an insight into "driver training" - we should all be trying to improve our driving, whether it's RoSPA, IAM First, HGV or PSV - or whether we have pre-1997 licences or not. Driver training is the most important thing. Oh, and nice New Defender Lego Technic by the way! Cheers.

Same here, the only restriction is the 101 code 'not for hire or reward' (to make a profit). To get that removed you have to do a driver CPC.

With regard to your mention about putting on your provisional license application to get all the categories, there may be a limitation on timescale. I'm not 100% certain about this, but when I had a provisional license (so many moons ago I have them all anyway), it was only valid for 2 years. If that is still the case, anyone getting those categories would have to take their test within 2 years or lose the right to be able to drive those categories as a learner.

Hi. If I passed my Cat B test in 1992 and I am wanting to add Cat C to my driving licence am I right in thinking I do not need to take the Cat C test and I just have to apply for Cat C using the D2 application form and send that with a D4 medical. Whereon the application form do I have to tick to indicate I am entitled under grandfather rights to automatically have Cat C put on my licence. Basically I want to become an hgv driver. Basically as far as my knowledge goes the route I think I am going to take is apply for Cat C using a D2 form send that with a D4 medical get Cat C provisional, take CPC (No need to take test as passed Cat B in 1992) send CPC proof to DVLA and get full Cat C? I'm really looking for guidance on that. Many thanks.

Hi there. I looked into this today and it looks to me like mine lasts 5 years until I’m 44 and then I have to renew it every year from the age of 45. I don’t think I have to retake the test though, I just have to send off a renewal form. Once I reach the age of 70 I have to renew my medical as well. I think I’ve read that right

    • @mckrc

@@ABusAndBeyond that’s the bit I wasn’t sure about. It’s not really clear anywhere if you have to take the test every year or like you say just send off a renewal form, even on the dvla web site. If it’s a re test every year then if we uprate our van I’ll be doing all the driving as I don’t think my wife will want to do that every year! There is talk of the Gov upping the basic weight limit from 3.5 to 4.25 at some point but goodness knows how long that will take to come in🤷🏽‍♂️

Hi Paul. If you can afford to do a C1 license, you may as well skip it and do a full C. Only the size of the wagon is different. Everything else is the same - medical, theory etc.
To answer your question, you need to do a B+E license for towing a caravan that makes your train weight in excess of 3.5t and below 7t. A C1 will only let you tow 750kg over the 7.5t (making the train weight 8250kg).
      I hope that helps.

Shawn, hello, so I see things are changing there, with my auto license , I can drive a Lorry up to 18,000 lbs GVW, but I had no problem with one of my jobs , good pick up, towing a very heavy scissors jack. With a 2 axle short trailer , . Now SCHOOL BUSSES, HIGHWAY TRACTORS & trailers, require a CDL license, issued by the FEDERAL GOVT, through the states, 1 beer , will put you OVER THE LIMIT, which. We can all feel safer on the roads following all this form filling.. I suspect international visitors are exempt. Are there Brexit implications?

thanks for making this video, absolute wealth of info! Quick question though, can I go ahead and do my theory before I get my provisional?

I think you need a provisional to book your theory as far as I can remember. Thanks for watching 👍

Hi just asking maybe a daft question I have C1 and I think C1 + do I need to go through this process I have D1 on it as well

C1 is basically the large van/ small box truck type of vehicle. D1 is a minibus which I think is 9 seats and over. We have a 7 seater VW T5 which my wife drives on her standard car licence.

Hi. Really good informative video. You're so right about watching the prices, not so much Google but the companies who want your money more than anything. I'm fortunate enough already have the license as I'm an old git. But seriously I'd heard about these companies that take as much money as they legally can. So it really is worth checking every option. Regards Luke.

In the UK, it’s licence, not license!!! Please don’t promote the Americanisation of English, the standard of which is already down to a rather alarming level.
