Nice Vlog Hayley. I use to use the mid axle to guide me. Great explanation. The worst thing as a new driver is reversing off a busy road. The test learns you the basics. When you get sent somewhere with a sharp reverse on a busy road it is a nightmare. People are impatient and it will stress you out. You will sweat LOL. We all went through that phase. I was bricking it about the reverse in the customers site and watching this video the night before helped me massively. Thumbs up and a subscribe for you and again MASSIVE THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!
What an excellent vlog. Hayley's very good at demonstrating things and explaining them. A couple of months ago one of our trainers told me that the biggest mistake new drivers make with artics is over steering, and here it is, perfectly explained and demonstrated. I shall watch this again a few times before I take my Class 1, early in 2022 hopefully. I would never have guessed Hayley had been a school teacher, the thought wouldn't have crossed my mind. 😂😉 I would think her lessons must have been quite interesting, even for non scientific brains like mine. But teaching's loss is our gain. Keep it up Hayley. 👍
That was excellent. My dad taught me, his favourite expression is “Stop waving the unit around like a flag” and “ Don’t turn the steering wheel”. Basically as you have said get the trailer going in the right direction at the start, and take the lock off as you go backwards. One other tip if you have oversteered, pull forward a little bit, dont pull the trailer all the way out, and have another bite at it.
Watched a few of your videos recently to help with my class c&e test, which I passed today 👍🏼very helpful thank you for the time you take to help others out 😁
Having done a 2 week course to pass my class one and 2 start of this year I can honestly say I've learned more watching your videos than I did on the actual driving course. I think you would make a great instruction at a driving school .
Thank you so much, Hayley, your videos make it so clear and easy. I'm headed to do my artic training. I'm a bus driver, and you made me pass my PCV reverse maneuver so easily by just following tips and tricks from this video. 2 years later.
I passed my CE (i.e. Truck+trailer in Holland) drivers exame with more luck than knowledge and will start working as a truck driver within a few days. I am very nervouse where my reversing will bring me. However your video has boosted somehow my convidence or at least made me think that… ok, it will be difficult but i will get it done. THANKS!
During the training process there is VERY little practice for the reverse. I felt like I was a literal danger being sent on the road with absolutely basically no skill, practice or experience in reversing. We can all agree reversing is 100x harder that forward. Therefore 40% even more should be around reversing I ended up doing a weekend reverse course after passing and what a difference it made
Thanks for sharing your explanation of your reversing your trailer. I'm not a trucker but I tow a 23 foot caravan and a similar set of rules. You do talk in a common sense way and I do love your videos. Following from Sydney Australia.
Mate, I have said it for a long time. Anyone who is confident with reversing a caravan, including left and right reverse turns, will find reversing an artic (or semi in Australia) a piece of cake. Its exactly the same method and understanding which is required. No need to spend months driving a rigid truck which will give you zero understanding of reversing an artic. Get yourself a caravan and practice. For example, if you were to drive a Mercedes Sprinter van or similar (which can be driven on a car licence) and stuck a similar length trailer on the back, you wouldn't be a million miles away from the minimum length required to take an artic test, yet you are gaining the exact same experience and understanding of reversing whilst only holding a car licence. 31 years Class 1 in the UK and 13 years MC (road train) in Australia.
Hi Hayley! Ive just completed my first day HGV driving (going from a car straight to artic) and the reversing has really blown my mind. All the issues/mistakes you raised are what I experienced today and I came away quite frustrated. Thank you for being so great at carefully explaining these manoeuvres. Fingers crossed I can take them with me tomorrow and going forward. ❤
Excellent Hayley, clear and concise I am sure that a lot of people will benefit from watching this video💚 *Unlike how I learned in an old yard driving a clapped out Seddon (no power steering} a short trailer and no guidance other than laughter from the mechanics.😫
Must comment again, as a former driving instructor in cars, the explanations of why its going wrong ie leaving the steering on too long, over correcting etc,is bang on, we all learn from our mistakes, exceptional knowledge for your experience 👏 hayley, im far better at reversing after one weeks experience thanks to you
Wow, this is just what needed to see. I passed my class 1 9 months ago and having never driven one since then, i have an assessment in the morning for a job. This has helped so much! Thank you
Really good video, very well explained, its just a shame you didn't get it out 4 weeks ago so I could use it when I first passed, lol. I'm still new to driving class 1 but I found a better way to approach steering that may be useful for some people. Drive the truck, not the trailer. I stopped trying to turn the trailer, and started thinking about where the unit needs to be to influence the trailer, remember you're steering a truck that's pushing a trailer, your not steering the trailer. As soon as I started thinking like this I stopped having to think about which way to turn the wheel, because it was the same as driving a class 2 or car. This also helped me learn when to take off the steering, because I was focused on the unit just as much as the trailer. Luckily I figured this out on day 2 of my training, so have never needed to learn the rules you mentioned, although my instructor tried to teach them to me, but since then I have never had to think about which way to turn the wheel, it was just natural. which made the whole process a lot easier.
as a new pass I've been struggling with reversing into bays and getting the truck set up correctly. your demonstration using this toy has be been brilliant. thankyou.
Ive not even started my lessons yet and already Hayley has really settled some nerves excellent tutorial will def be watching more of our "H" invaluable x
Hayley this is such a fantastic resource thank you so much! I'm off to rewatch again 🙈 if you ever get time you amazing mummy machine I would love to see the same again but for blind siding in 🤞👍🏻
As a new pass in my first HGV role this video is solid gold, so incredibly helpful & informative. Thank you Hayley for taking some of the mystery out of the dark art of reversing.
The only thing I would say other then excellent Hayley is be very careful when driving along the front of already filled bays getting too close to the front of other parked up unloading trucks when you sweep past upto the rear wheels of your tractor and then doing your hard left hand down can cause the rear end to swing into an occupied bay damaging the front of the parked truck , watch your own video and you will see the rear corner drivers side sweep into bay one as you hard left for bay two sit away sufficient distance and make your turn, 35years experience now and a few minor mishaps have taught me to concentrate at all times and have a good look round first , good luck in your new career stay safe stay sharp and never do anything faster then your guardian angel can fly ,lots of love
I'm doing my reversing test on Tuesday again failed first time. Just watched this video and I've understood more watching this video about reversing than I did from my instructor. Will be watching it several more times to help it sink in before my retest. You've explained things in simple terms rather than over explaining things. Thank you. Have watched several of your videos now. Keep them coming.
Good info for starting HGV drivers!!! But no vlog, book, teacher or school can teach it like actually doing it.... one learns with experience!! One thing I’ld like to mention.... when manouvring: Open the windows. Switch of the radio. No distractions like cellphone or talking passengers. To me these are also applicable when driving in busy traffic with pedestrians and cyclists (they are the truckers’ biggest worries!!!) I wish you and everyone else safe and joyous journeys.... Driving HGV to me is one of the nicest ways of making a living!!!! Kind Regards,Henk,Dedemsvaart, the Netherlands.
I passed my class test three weeks ago. Last week was my first class one job with the agency and I was spoiled with a new Scania V8, which was an absolute joy to drive. Flatbed with heavy site metal supports. Also rear steering axle on the trailer, all brand new to me. I ended up in a housing estate twice looking for the site and I can assure you all, take your time and you WILL reverse it and have the trailer going exactly where you want it. Also sharp bends, just go for it and you'll be amazed what you can get it around, definitely easier than a rigid. After debating if i wanted to drive class 2 (which i do enjoy) or class 1 I definitely want to do class 1. Seeing that trailer follow you around is so cool. I also drove a pick up with a triple axle trailer and what a pain in the arse that was, way more difficult to reverse!! Although after a day of it be prepared to drive your car home still thinking you have a trailer hanging off the back 😂😂
drnh444, what agency did you join?, I have got zero Class 1 experience since passing in Jan 23, as everywhere I look they are asking for experience in Class 1, and even most cases Class 2, those who say "new passers welcome to apply", I never get beyond the CV stage, which to me proves they don't take or want new passers, otherwise I'd at least get an Interview and then not be offered the job, I could accept that, far more, but getting into the industry seems absolutely impossible for me, and I am seeking any help i can get
Thanks for the video, as a new pass I have been finding it hard to get my bar reversing right. Using your tips has helped me to reverse better into bays
Hi, Ive been shunting trailers around the yard for a few years, love my job and I'm currently halfway through doing my test, don't think I will struggle too much but your videos are great, helped me loads!!!!!
I’ve been driving rigids for 5 year and I’m with a new company that’s going to pay for my class 1 this month. I’ve been dreading the reversing as it looks insane on some of the bays we go to but this video has really Helped me calm my nerves a bit thank you. Also without sounding misogynistic I find that a woman’s perspective much more informative that a males - I’ve watched a few videos with males and it’s a ‘bing bang bong there it goes easy’ type where as yours you are willing to admit you’re not the best driver and show helpful tips rather than expecting people to know everything so thank you
Very good information about reverse 👍 I start my first driving semi trailer on my own this weekend, this video help me get more confident. Thank Hayley!
Excellent video, very well explained,I’m not a truck driver but I’m comfortable reversing tractor trailers, van trailers etc,but couldn’t explain how to it like this, very helpful video👍
This video is great for new drivers. I sat there nodding my head in agreement with everything you said. I remember making all the same mistakes when I started my HGV career and I wish this video had been about back then. Reversing is the most under taught subject in HGV training. Well done and keep it going.
Thanks a lot Hatley. I'm a new driver and struggling with the reversing.i have watched many videos and by far your one is the best. You have saved a Amazon building having a HGV going through its walls 😂
Well I think you covered that subject pretty darn well. Plenty of examples in the classroom and out. I bet it's a really tricky subject to try and explain hence so many different methods handed down from driver to driver. I think this should help a lot of new drivers. It will offer them more information, another drivers perspective, and I think the fact we all learn slightly differently will help with that pool of advice that people can use as reference material. Your live demo really explains where I was going wrong on my driver evaluation and how I massively oversteered. I also wasn't aware of the delay from turning the wheel to the trailer moving, this now explains so much as to where I messed up. I was making the mistake of transferring the steering wheel movement from my car to an artic with disastrous results....... and the cat just vanished at 07:24 !!! magic cat
As a newly qualified class 1 driver who has yet to do his first shift alone. Thank you I have just learnt so much and will watch again and again before my assessment next week with Boots.
Again another excellent vid based mostly on technique's for new drivers, and well worth studying studiously till they become second nature. I would err on the side of caution though on following Tyre tracks especially at major hubs/yards, as most of them will have been created by Shunter drivers who have much smaller driver units and tend to use much more acute angles when backing onto bay's. By gum, wish this young lady was around when I first started.
Great Tips and tricks about reversing in this video Hayley, ive done 4 class 1 lessons and been struggling with the reverse around the corner. My instructor doesnt really give any hints or tips like this about steering during the reverse, he just tells me im doing it wrong 😂
I was lucky , worked with my dad when I was young. Was shunting at 13 in the yard. Best advice my Dad gave me was if you see too much trailer in the right mirror. Steer right. If you see too much trailer in left mirror. Turn to the left. Ut as I said I was lucky... lots of practice before I was 21
That was amazing, how he knew the exact time for you to take the steering off and straight with the trailer, right out there! This video has helped me a lot, my reversing has been progressing verrrry slowly....🙄
I passed my CE around the same time as you Hayley and I can totally relate as I was making hard work of the simplest reversing from over cooking it lol. I'm getting better now simply because I'm taking my time which allows me to correct myself easier. Brilliant tips btw and I'm sure you'll be a great instructor with your patience. Happy belated birthday too 🎂👌
clear explanation of what people find the hardest part of artic driving , surprisingly something like ETS2 can be quite a good learning tool as regards the way artic's move & reverse
yes I agree, and play the SCS games since 2006. they are a great learning tool, hense why a driving instructor said if you have never learned to reverse an artic before, then I am really shocked that you learned that from a computer game.
I live in the states and we refer to those knobs as suicide knobs. They are handy. Have one on my New Holland tractor. I taught myself backing up using my vehicle with my longer utility trailer. I would go to a mall on Sundays (when parking lot more empty) I would practice until it became “ second nature”. I didn’t have anyone to teach me so that’s how I learned. Nice video, very good instruction.
Best easy tip I ever got, which takes almost no thinking about when reversing a trailer of any size, place any hand at 6 o'clock on the wheel, if you want the trailer to go left turn the wheel left, right turn wheel to the right.
Wish I'd seen this yesterday, would be delivering parcels tonight. Couldn't get it on that bay between two trailers for love nor money in that distribution centre, plus my test time for the job was midnight, think I drew the short straw there. Thanks Hayley gonna ring and ask for another go at it 👍
I was doing the same mistakes at the beginning and I wanted to get to the bay in the first attempt- most of the time it was a disaster:) I felt soooo embarrassed and I was crying in the cab later on:) Now it's been a 3 years- reversing is a different story but I must admit- I'm struggling sometimes- when reversing on services or blind side. You are a really good driver - shame I wasn't that calm- that would save my hair (turned grey:))). good luck with everything Hayley!!!
@HanaMontana: You have my sympathy. I started to get better - then started to get in the bay in one go, then it just got steadily worse and worse. I'm developing a fear EVERYTIME I pull into a yard thinking WTF is going to happen his time - I was making a mash of it and so reversed back in a dead straight line to the ready bay. got out and asked them - they told me what the other drivers do so I had a good idea then. Then somebody talked me through it, nice chap, fellow driver, but that never works if they make a mistake like, right from left etc. So, I guess, at the end of the day it's up to Number 1 and you don't have to like it, but you have to get it done. G.O.A.L get out and look - is very, very helpful especially if you are not sure whether or not you might clip something. One thing, when reversing 45 footers, be very cagey, or they will go through the unopened bay doors 💯% of the time!
That is a very well put together video Hayley, I am sure many drivers will take a lot of benefit from your very informative description of how to reverse a trailer, well done 👍 👏
Dave from Smart Trucking mentioned a nice little trick: Grab the wheel from the 6 o'clock position, and wherever you turn THAT point, that's where the back of your trailer will go. Helped me quite a bit. 👍👍👍👍

I would think her lessons must have been quite interesting, even for non scientific brains like mine. But teaching's loss is our gain. Keep it up Hayley. 👍
I’m shitting myself
That was excellent. My dad taught me, his favourite expression is “Stop waving the unit around like a flag” and “ Don’t turn the steering wheel”.
Basically as you have said get the trailer going in the right direction at the start, and take the lock off as you go backwards. One other tip if you have oversteered, pull forward a little bit, dont pull the trailer all the way out, and have another bite at it.
The way you express your driving knowledge is amazing. Thank you!
Watched a few of your videos recently to help with my class c&e test, which I passed today 👍🏼very helpful thank you for the time you take to help others out 😁
This lady is a absolute legend, she is destined to be successful in life, keep up the great work you legend 🙂
Having done a 2 week course to pass my class one and 2 start of this year I can honestly say I've learned more watching your videos than I did on the actual driving course.
I think you would make a great instruction at a driving school .
hayley very nice i am almost familiar with the truck without driving just watching your videos.
Therefore 40% even more should be around reversing
I ended up doing a weekend reverse course after passing and what a difference it made
Been driving coaches for years, started on hgv last week, this is the best blog on ytube by far, well done!
Excellent Hayley, clear and concise I am sure that a lot of people will benefit from watching this video💚
*Unlike how I learned in an old yard driving a clapped out Seddon (no power steering} a short trailer and no guidance other than laughter from the mechanics.😫
Thank you
I wish I watched this video 2 years ago. Thanks for the great tips Hayley 😃
You are by far the best best Artic teacher I had!
Luckily I figured this out on day 2 of my training, so have never needed to learn the rules you mentioned, although my instructor tried to teach them to me, but since then I have never had to think about which way to turn the wheel, it was just natural. which made the whole process a lot easier.
as a new pass I've been struggling with reversing into bays and getting the truck set up correctly. your demonstration using this toy has be been brilliant. thankyou.
Very kind of you to do this for new guys!.. Stay safe!
Again, a brilliant video from you Hayley. The best on YT !
This is the sort of stuff that should be standard in driver training. Thanks so much.
Ive not even started my lessons yet and already Hayley has really settled some nerves excellent tutorial
will def be watching more of our "H" invaluable x
Out of all the training vids I’ve watched this one has been the most helpful
Pleased to hear it. All the best to you 😊
Hayley this is such a fantastic resource thank you so much!
Yet another brilliant video Hayley. Keep them coming! Stay safe.
One thing I’ld like to mention.... when manouvring:
Open the windows.
Switch of the radio.
No distractions like cellphone or talking passengers.
To me these are also applicable when driving in busy traffic with pedestrians and cyclists (they are the truckers’ biggest worries!!!)
I wish you and everyone else safe and joyous journeys....
Driving HGV to me is one of the nicest ways of making a living!!!!
Kind Regards,Henk,Dedemsvaart,the Netherlands.
It all experience ,timing, positioning and knowing your trailer reversing behaviour good luck haley your a wee gem .. 💎
Useful information as always. I listened to this after my shift & the accent made me fall asleep 😪
Got my test in 3 hours time. Perfect timing and a great video to wake up to! Thanks again Hayley.
Did you pass?
You don't need that coz reversing been cancelled on test lol....hope u been pass
@@marekjablonski5443 after the 15th Nov, it is a separate test, hasn't been cancelled
I failed dammit. But not gonna give up! Reversing was fine though!
Sorry you didn't pass. Good luck for your retest - you can do it! :)
This is great. Thanks Hayley. New HC driver 🇦🇺👍
I’ve been dreading the reversing as it looks insane on some of the bays we go to but this video has really
Helped me calm my nerves a bit thank you. Also without sounding misogynistic I find that a woman’s perspective much more informative that a males - I’ve watched a few videos with males and it’s a ‘bing bang bong there it goes easy’ type where as yours you are willing to admit you’re not the best driver and show helpful tips rather than expecting people to know everything so thank you
Thanks for the comment. I hope your class 1 reversing goes well 😁
Very good information about reverse 👍 I start my first driving semi trailer on my own this weekend, this video help me get more confident. Thank Hayley!
Ain't a trucker but I can see you got very good tips for someone new with no much experience under they belt. Loved it
Excellent video, very well explained,I’m not a truck driver but I’m comfortable reversing tractor trailers, van trailers etc,but couldn’t explain how to it like this, very helpful video👍
this video deserves to go viral, super helpful. Thank you so much
Nicely explained :) definitely will help when I’m driving
This video is great for new drivers. I sat there nodding my head in agreement with everything you said. I remember making all the same mistakes when I started my HGV career and I wish this video had been about back then. Reversing is the most under taught subject in HGV training. Well done and keep it going.
Been looking forward to this tutorial from the day you passed class 1
👌🏽 Brilliant at as always. Thank you so much for all the tips 🚛❤
Thanks a lot Hatley. I'm a new driver and struggling with the reversing.i have watched many videos and by far your one is the best. You have saved a Amazon building having a HGV going through its walls 😂
Excellent…Application,explanation and demonstration…
I was making the mistake of transferring the steering wheel movement from my car to an artic with disastrous results....... and the cat just vanished at 07:24 !!! magic cat
Well done Hayley another first class video
Ut as I said I was lucky... lots of practice before I was 21
I am so happy to have found your video as the worst for me is to reverse, thank you for your help
Happy belated birthday too 🎂👌
clear explanation of what people find the hardest part of artic driving , surprisingly something like ETS2 can be quite a good learning tool as regards the way artic's move & reverse
yes I agree, and play the SCS games since 2006. they are a great learning tool, hense why a driving instructor said if you have never learned to reverse an artic before, then I am really shocked that you learned that from a computer game.
just finished the whole video. one of the best tutorials I've seen. Great camera angles and explanations. this is sure to help me.
Thank you. I hope it does help. Best wishes 😊
Wow. You are just amazing. Starting my C+E today and all the time I am worried about my reversing and your video has helped me a lot.
Excellent, clear and concise, you should do lots more of these, lots of new drivers will benefit from this.
Best easy tip I ever got, which takes almost no thinking about when reversing a trailer of any size, place any hand at 6 o'clock on the wheel, if you want the trailer to go left turn the wheel left, right turn wheel to the right.
As a new driver this is the most useful video I've seen so far, Thankyou👍
Dave from Smart Trucking mentioned a nice little trick:
Grab the wheel from the 6 o'clock position, and wherever you turn THAT point, that's where the back of your trailer will go.
Helped me quite a bit. 👍👍👍👍
Had I seen this video before going for my assessment. I would have passed. Great video haley.
Thank you 😊
Thanks alot,I've learnt alot from this tutorial..keep it up..am a new HGV lad but far away in Africa.
just started my hgv career and i cant thank you enough for this video, good job
You know what ? You deserve tons of respect and compliments. Despite being a young woman to a very male profession you quickly established yourself, gained respect and followers and you always try to promote this proffesion. What can I say. You have my total respect. Pete "the hammer", athens, greece (ex brownhills walsall and proud of my midlands connection)
Thank you Pete, all the best to you 😊
Same to you!! You deserve tonnes of respect! And your good nature, your accent and your location makes me remember my happy days in the midlands!! Trained by westgate training of walsall, ex samy jones! Loved the area!!
What an awsome video!! On my 3rd assesment and failing the reversing this has helped so much !!
Brilliant video. You make it so clear and it's perfect for new drivers. Thanks!
Thankyou
Thankyou
Thankyou
Amazing

Your video's will be here to help thousands of drivers now and in the future.
Thankyou so much.
Thank you sweet yes really helpful I’m starting my new class 1 job Monday and a little anxious about the reversing so ye awesome thank you👍
I hope everything went well? :)
@@TruckDriverHayley ye good thank you but like you when you first passed finding it a little difficult putting it on a bay lol
