  • Writer-Director Makoto Shinkai makes beautiful films, obviously. But after watching his body of work, I noticed how his animation serves the theme of waiting or being present. This video essay focuses on his feature films: Your Name, The Garden of Words, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and The Place Promised In Our Early Days.

    "life doesn't glimmer like this"
I used to think that anime skies were just anime skies until I was in Tokyo in the spring this year and walked 6km across town as the sun was setting. The sky was something else, perfect blue with gorgeous shifting pastel clouds. I'd never seen anything like it before. There is something different about the light here.
But yes, noticing details is one of the keys to happiness in life. Did you notice that little bird flitting about in the bushes by the bus stop? Or see the misspelled sign outside the cafe by the train station? Find little details every day that make you smile.

This was a really nice and insightful video essay. I wouldn't have noticed all of those particular aspects of Shinkai's animation style had you not pointed them out and it provided me with more clarity on 5 cms per second which I always feel like people should see before Your Name to understand how painful 5 cms is and thus how satisfying Your Name becomes. I remember thinking Shinkai is able to convey the painstakingly slow process through the things like the trains and the weather, without explicitly describing the feeling necessarily. I think it would be cool in general if you did just commentary videos on things like this, like what your thought about certain anime/ shows. etc.

This video is really something I needed right now, thank you for making it.
I've been trapped in NEETdom for the last 5 months and will be for the next whole year, because I have to recover from mental illnesses that have caused me to be dropped from my former major in university.
I don't really want to wait *that* long, but I do want to start a new major, which is only possible once a year, in October.
Next October would be too little time to recover, so next year's October it has to be.
And due to this ridiculous amount of time I have on my hands now, a lot of the topics you talk about are things that I'm confronted with currently.
I've never thought about what I'm doing as waiting, because I am trying to actively make this year significant towards reaching my destination (the new major).
But I always struggled with the powerlessness of the times where I can't work towards my goals.
Now I realise in those times I'm just like a person waiting for a train, and that it's an entirely normal part of life, just in a different, more abstract, context.

@Matthew Morante NEET means "Not in Education, Employment or Training" and the "-dom" is basically the same as in "fand-dom".
It just describes being NEET and all that this state/situation encompasses.

@@MacMan2152 Well, of course I do need to pass exams while doing my degree, and I recently started preparing for the syllabus.
      But
      1. as mentioned, I am recovering from mental illness and therefore I need to go at this in a way that won't burn me out, and
      2. even people actively studying at university usually spend time taking breaks to relax.
So, no, I don't think it would be better to prepare than watching cartoons (or relaxing otherwise).
Both are valid and important uses of my time.

*due to chronic illness I didn't pass some exams in time, I tried to advocate my medical disadvantage, but they didn't accept that and kicked me out

When you started the video off by showing scenes from 5 cm per second, I was already thinking to myself "don't cry, don't cry..." and then you got me with the "even if we had written 1.000 text messages back and forth our hearts probably wouldn't have moved even 1 Centimeter closer". It's honestly one of the best lines of an inner monologue I ever had the pleasure to hear.
Anyway, I think you did a great job with this video and I have actually noticed that I started to get more infatuated with my surroundings after having watched Shinkai's work.

He likes waiting because his creation are waiting itself, tedious, boring, empty, like me waiting for his movies to end. I'm delighted that I found Hoshi Ou Kodomo to be his most exciting work, when animation is, animation. This opinion is in stark contrast to the video, who dumped on it. I think my problem was I watched his Hoshi no Koe first and witnessed his progression, or waiting of it to be precised. My problem with Shinkai is he puts a lot of effort into pointless details, giving this surreal feeling that some people can related to while someone like me, a fan of animation, absolutely detest. I don't hate his work, I just hate how he recycles his themes over and over again with shallow plot, shallow characters and shallow animation. If you want to see Japan in all its glory, just visit it but don't go to tourist spot. Pick a nice place, settle down, take long walk and BAM, you just got Shinkai-ed. I can relate with Shinkai, but not with his characters. I love the things he put onto his show: the sky, the train, the beautiful mundane scenery and objects, but I won't watch a montage of them over and over again, work after work. Unfortunately, I watched all of his works after Hoshi no Koe. If you think I am the type who love Shounen with constant action, I don't. The entire point of animation is movements and spectacles. Just look at what Satoshi and Miyazaki made against whatever Shinkai is making. He might as well make live action movie because what he made are merely animated live action. If you can relate to Shinkai magic realism or whatever else he's making. Good on you. My concern really is he's wasting big budget that he's getting on works that is full of passion but no direction. It's depressing. This is what people hailed as the next Miyazaki?

    This video is wonderful!!
I found out Makoto Shinkai's work around 2009-2010 from his She and Her Cat video and I went sharing the video with my Facebook friend on his Facebook group/page. Until the last time we talked (we lost contact 2 years ago) he said he really appreciated Shinkai's video that I shared and that'd always be what he'll remember of me. I fell in love *_hard_* with Shinkai's work that in my English verbal examination (in 2010 when I was 15 years old) in front of several English teachers, where we could choose our own topic, I told the examiners "My topic will be about the greatest animator I have ever seen and admire, Makoto Shinkai". So yes. I also talked about his 5 centimeter movie and included other mangaka's mangas- basically why I love anime and manga. Years later, seeing Shinkai's work getting more and more recognized worldwide, I cried so much. Thank you for making this wonderful video 🌻

5 centimeters per second is the most Shinkai film imo, he expressed his style of love, loneliness, sorrow and uncertainties the best in this movie
