You " Pioneered " that road from a wilderness. NICE JOB. 30 years working on a D-8/D10 Cat and a National crane and I must say you were pretty smooth with the controls. As long as there is spoil coming off the blade you are in good shape. Courtney is pretty smooth on that Excavator also. I always got the most satisfaction from my work all those years when i was finished and I stopped the Equipment and climbed down and walked through the area . Very satisfying. Congrats to you both. !!!

The part on the push arm is called a trunion ball & a trunion cap with the bolts thru it, it also has shims when ball is new your's is pretty worn ,you can shave some off the cap with a torch to tighten cap on trunion ball
I couldn't help but think that a large machine mercilessly uprooting nature seems quite symbolic of the world. Once I was over that, it's quite amazing what you are doing!
Awesome road work there!!! For future reference, to kill a yellow jacket nest.... 1) identify the actual nest location and opening they are using to enter/exit. 2) wait until almost dark or after dark as all the yellow jackets will have gone back into the nest (they can't fly in the dark). 3) hose the nest via the opening they are using to come in and out. 4) if any make it out from a 2nd entrance you did not know about and you are using a flashlight or headlamp, turn it off. As soon as they have no light, the yellow jackets will go straight to the ground - they will not fly in the dark. Oh, and unlike honey bees, yellow jackets can sting you over and over and over (little bastards!). Short story, decades ago my grandfather was bush-hogging a field and hit an old rotted stump that apparently held a yellow jacket nest. They mobbed the tractor and all we say was granddaddy un-assing the tractor and running straight for the lake. Tractor was still in gear and putted off across the field into the woods. He was OK, as was the tractor, but they got him good. After dark, the warfare commenced on the nest!!!
Riley, As you do your road work, you might want to consider creating some defensible space. Rather that pushing trees onto the ground and creating ladder fuel, pull the trees to a clearing where you can burn them in the winter, like the loggers do. btw, Ladder fuel is fuel that connects a fire on the ground to the canopy above. You already have a pile of ladder fuel around your home. You could spend an entire season creating defensible space around your home.

I’m sure they will. There only 2 of them and doing all the dozer projects so they can turn around and sell it must be a priority. They have $ locked up in that equipment.

You two are doing an amazing job there's a few things i would suggest
1. as you make your way in with the dozer remove the trees with the saw falling parallel and away cinch each one with a wire sling and use your big winch on the dozer to pull them out in big bunches to a landing and invest in a mobile mill if you can your wasting so much wood.
2. remove the excess wood waste on outer edges cause as the years go by that will be extremely flammable
you have the machine and the ingenuity to make all that happen
Hay mate, just a suggestion. You might want to take some time to build up the pinion where the bolt fell out of as she is getting a bit sloppy. You can carefully build up both the pin and the cups with weld and then carefully grind it back to be perfectly smooth and so they both fit into each other. Just be careful not to put too much heat into the part and let cool down a bit after a couple of runs so you don't affect the structure of the metal. You might need to get a small Milwaukee die grinder 2" to grind/smooth the weld out of the cups. Takes a bit of time but will save you thousands down the track. Do both sides at the same time so you get all the slop out of both sides and it will take lots of stress out of many other areas of the blades connection points. If the weather is cold you may have to preheat the parts to be welded to 140 degrees Celsius before welding.
You are so lucky to have that type of soil to work with.. Nice and rocky with just enough dirt for a binder..... Your road should last a long time
Too much fun ! You should find some bolts either have holes in them for safety wire or maybe king nuts so you can run a cater pin through.
blue loctite may help as well. and get an oxy acetylene torch set if you don't have one.
it woud be great to see the roadway project in a plan to fully appreciate it.

the Dog run will be so nice!! Added one myself a month ago for my 8 month old Dutch Shepherd! So nice not having to worry if they "need to go out at night" I added a motion light outside as well!

@@donalddodson7365 I think they put up a fence 🤣 we had to put pavers unter the fence line to keep dogs in and pests out, but mostly keeps our diggers away from the fence and the chipmunks and voles have a highway with some small escape routes since it is a wood fence.

All I can say is WOW!! The dozer was absolute money.. With the new road, solar array, soon to have a cement floor in the garage you are turning this homestead into quite a property.. Perhaps you can barter your dozer skills for a water well. Then you're set for life..
if the drone is working you should add some aerial footage of the new and old road for a more dramatic impression of what you've accomplished
Congratulations on pushing your road through the way you wanted it to go. The dog run looks like an excellent idea, both for them and your peace of mind. Though the dozer caused some major headaches, you overcame them. It finally repaid your time, effort and spilled blood by achieving your objective. It is certainly a great servant if you are going to get involved in major earthworks, but being old it will repay being given regular instalments of inspection and maintenance. Check those bolts with their obvious wander lust.
You guys have become one of my favorite youtube channels. The variety of stuff you accomplish is fun to watch.

Nice job, pretty cool that there is so much rock for a good road base and now have years of firewood and lumber.
Check out the blade on the dozer. Lots of hours welding were done on that piece.
Those welds are made on purpose to make the metal stronger.

Good work. I bought my 1955 Allis Chalmers Shoveldozer 34 years ago. I put about 1000 hours on it while building my house. I put about 1000 hours into repairs and maintenance. I agree with your assessment of an hour working on it for every hour using it. Watch out for cramps from sitting in the machine too long. I used my metal detector many times to find parts. Have fun. I am sure you have noticed all the ribing, on the blade and the blade rails, and suports. That is all done by hand, with hard facing,welding rod. Quite expensive, and labor intensive. The person who did all that is the best I have ever seen.

Their is something of beauty in watching the relentless nature of a powerful machine! The ease at which it does what it does yet at the same time the incredible stress it no doubt is under! Hence things coming loose or breaking. Taking a wrench to it before use is most likely a good thing! You guys are awesome great work.
The metal detector was brilliant comedy. It had the whole family laughing this morning. On a side note, Sunday mornings are now dedicated to coffee, breakfast, and Ambition Strikes before the day begins.

You guys are awesome with the work you are doing!! I am really impressed as well with the way you have progressed with operating the D8 especially with side cutting that road in and this is coming from someone who has had in excess of 40,000 hrs operating bulldozers.
I think the special delivery for next week's episode is concrete. Will be interesting. Hope that you get no rain and get the new road compacted well before trying concrete again.

Yes I’m almost old enough to be their grandad & I also grew up on a farm. It’s kinda fun to watch them figure out how things work.
Making great progress guys. I’m sure it’s been mentioned somewhere, but if you’ll leave trees up it makes it much easier to push up root ball with dozer . More leverage etc. Then use mini ex to cut them up and move them etc. Assuming you are using trees for fire wood and damaging it with dozer blade isn’t a factor. Great work either way.
> Where did the yellow jackets go? The blast of hot air coming out of the radiator takes down wasps, bees, and hornets in a few seconds. If you can get the radiator blast when engine is up to temp within a few feet of the target before disturbing you can watch them drop like flies. Also don't forget to blow out the radiator core's exterior with an air compressor after working in dusty locations, always watch the water temp. Old cats need to run cool.

Think about making a 'FIRE STOP' with that dozer. 'FIRE STOPS' are also extremely helpful for Firefighter access, 'IF' there ever were a Forest-fire.

That DID go FAST!! Even with going and getting the metal detector and going and getting the wrong size bolt, THEN and having to find the original bolt, and do the road. Riley, you should make it a habit to go over the CAT periodically (every few operating hours) and check for things like tightness, wear, and general condition. My experience is that the older the machine, the more unpredictable the reliability of even the simple stuff gets. Otherwise, hope your friends get through on the new road. Awesome!!
Yep... I have faith in you two! You've come this far and have managed to get some awesome things done to your home and shop so I have no problem believing you'll get the road done and concrete poured in the shop before the winter stops you in your tracks. 💪

What’s so cool about y’all’s channel is this. Both of you had ZERO experience building roads in the mountains, operating and fixing heavy equipment, building livable barndominiums and building/ retrofitting a giant army dump truck. Honestly that’s a great idea. City folk will pay a lot of money for a get away in the woods. Same goes for country folk and everyone in between. The comment below on securing your dog door reminded me since you guys are becoming more popular and you're finishing up your road... A motion sensor towards the entry to your driveway to let you know when someone is coming up might be a good idea. LoRaWAN sensors are longer range and can be solar/battery operated (may reach close to the start of your driveway without a repeater). They can connect to a smart hub so you can change a smart bulb to different colors in the shop and/or announce over some smart speaker someone's presence. Good addition to your game cameras.

The more a watch the more impressed I am with how good Riley is running that dozer. I didn't expect him to get ahold on how to run it as fast as he has. Boy was I wrong. So exciting to see you two getting the rough grading done. I suspect you have a considerable amount of finish grading to do. Are you serious about concrete roadway? And how about the lower sections of your road, is there still much work to be done downhill with grading and such to help with erosion control? And how about erosion control surrounding (both sides) your new roadway? I suspect you have plans for proper drainage to keep your new road intact.

Another awesome project! A quick hint.....When pushing trees over with the dozer, aim where you want the tree to fall, tilt the blade all the way over toward the tree, and dive the blade into the ground just before the major root ball. As you start pushing the tree, lift the blade and tilt the blade up at the same time. This eliminates most possibilities of the root ball ending up under the blade or bulldozer. The same concept applies with bigger rocks.
Very Cool - You Guys are Great!!!! Doing stuff for the critters, Yeah!!!! Another wonderful video, I didn't see it live but, am happy all the folks chipped in on the bolt issue. Not only have you both built your home, you've created a community that loves you. When you have a chance take a look at an IPB (illustrated parts breakdown) of the area where the bolt loosens (falls out). Aside from using some Caterpillar grade Loctite, there may be a race or something missing from that area (allowing slop, that cannot be detected with - wiggling it = man vs tons).

Loved seeing you file the saw chain,yourself. Many novice have no clue the chain is even dulled. Great dozer work. You’re a natural, greater efficiently will come with time, operating. Lost bolts, are a clue that preventive maintenance is most important. I lost plenty bolts and parts in fifty years, you two make me grin. While pioneering a new road bed, I’d walk the center line of the new road and tie ribbons, rags, whatever would be visible. Never cover downed brush, small trees and such, strive for a solid roadbed, if not you risk real future cave in and roadbed failure. Remember to nurture mother earth.

Great video and as inspiring as usual. So fun to see you figuring out the challenges.
2 suggestions.....learn to ground balance your metal detector (then buy a better one, lol) and always follow your grading. No clue what's been dropped or left from the past, may find some coolness.
Also, your new doogo door is now a great access point into your home when you are gone. Build a more secure and lockable cage to keep ugly people out. Yes, I know you are long way out but that makes a tempting target too.
