It is a pity that Ray had to wait till the very end to receive a Lifetime Achievement award when he was in hospital counting his last days. Had he been a Director born in the West, I am sure many of his movies today would have won the Academy Awards for Best films. Only recently Hollywood film-makers like Martin Scorsese have started openly acknowledging the immense contribution of Ray on world cinema. But it is too late. Utpal Datta is widely appreciated in the Hindi-speaking world as a talented comedian and villian for his many loveable performances starting from Bhuvan Shome to Golmal. But,the "much nahin to kuch nahin"spouting cussed senior citizen, was little known, perhaps, beyond Bengal as a pioneering stage artist, who learnt his craft from Geoffrey Kendal, was a pioneering Director, writer, actor of stage plays, founder of a famous play group and a respected afficiniado and critic of Western and Indian classical and folk music before he acted in movies both Bangla and Hindi. In fact, before all of this and for the better part of his life he was a committed Communist who used to regularly sent most of his earnings from Mumbai to his Party and Theatre Group in Bengal.
Utpal Datta is "versatile" and not a "Renaissance Man", as he himself in this Seminar, dedicated to Satyajit Ray in 1992, expounds and critically examines.
Utpal Datta hectors, quite literally, the bureaucratic cognoscenti for their philistinism and hypocricy in their celebration of Ray.And in this tirade you shall get to see what Ray is but paradoxically, invisibilised despite the almost cult-like following and heaps of writings on him.Importantly, one gets to see what is it that makes Utpal Datta,a Maverick and the crusading intellectual.

I have got some doubts, if you all can help me to clear them....
This seems to me like a communist giving is opinion, keeping Ray in front as 'sikhandi' ...
I will like to highlight certain points, below:
    1. It was Shyam Benegal, who in one of his interview called Ray as a Renaissance man, probably because of his multi-talent... It was not the India government...
    2. India Government conferred Padma Shree, way back in 1958.. so it is not that Government run to give Bharat Ratna because Ray had own Oscar.
    3. In 1971, University of Delhi gave him the honorary doctor and Oxford University gave it to him in 1976. So it is not Oxford whom others followed.
    4. In Tapan Sinha's autobiography, Tapan babu had mentioned, that all films of Ray was released in USA, in the same time as they were released in India. Exception was last 3 movies, - Gono Debota, Sakha Proshakha, Aguntuk
    5. 'Hirok Rajar Deshay' movie was released after fall of USSR. But it was told to depict Indira Gandhi's emergency... Why?
    6. Most of the classic movies are made in capitalist countries... Why?
    7. There was a communist government in West Bengal from 1977 to 2011, how many times , the movie 'Debi' was displayed to fight against superstition or 'Sadgati' for caste system?

Hirak Rajar Deshe was released in 1980. USSR fell in 89. It is a well accepted fact that HRD was a satire against Indira's emergency. Back at that time the leftists of India derided the Congress party as agents/middlemen of capitalists. 30 years since this recording, the left parties in India are completely irrelevant and have to tie up with the same Congress party to stay alive.

Whar a superbly articulated speech decorated with well carefully chosen words & phrases of a versatile genius on an iconic figure of Indias cultural , social, economic&cultural Renaissance of India who was not given his rightful honour in his lifetime.

A lucid and sharp account. Many points resonate yet I cannot help but be saddened to witness one's intellect closing doors for any other possibility. Certain stones or energy centers or alternative forms of medicine have shown to be more effective than modern medicine in some cases but then again it is subjective. It would be prudent to investigate for oneself before dismissing it as superstition. Talking from personal experience.

Indian Renaissance is too advanced for historical awareness. Talk about Bengal Renaissance itself, most of us aren't aware and it is a bit sad.
