  • In this theory-based episode, Derek explores the silicon diode! He covers some of the history of this component, from the thermionic diode to the modern diode we are familiar with today. He touches on the basics of PN junction semiconductor physics, and then he takes some actual measurements on a cheap curve tracer so we can better understand what's happening.

It's always real science happening when you melt stuff! Great job, thanks Derek!

I love this theory that the electron is the moving object in the vacuum tube. 🥰 then it gets messy when describing electrons and semiconductors. 🙈🙉🙊 thanks.

Derek this is superb. Many have never seen a curve tracer and those who are self motivated may easily build one as you've clearly shown. 73

Thanks! Yeah, they're super easy to make (at least allows basic measurements), and are an eye opener for peeking inside the DUT. -Derek

Yes, I also learn the same way: first a bit of theory, then the practical application. Probably that's why I enjoy the format of 2 videos per topic, so to speak - please don't change it in the future, it's ideal! Thanks Derek! 🥳And keep up the good work! ✊

Derek… still waiting for that analog delay pedal

Hey, funny you mention it. I was looking into this a while back. Not sure if I want to do analog tape, or bucket brigade.. but it’s on my list! -Derek

@@AmRadPodcast I’d prefer tape but anything will do. IMHO I don’t think it’s an easy challenge and even if you fail the journey would still be great. As my electronics projects have had a very low success rate…. Super-Heterodyne I’m calling you out!

Can’t believe you got Mark Ruffalo to narrate this video.😂

so sick of the videos with text banners at bottom and fly off to fast. so hit the II button.. and have the vol and all controls in front of text. do people not think ...............

Thanks for the input. Maybe we’ll try to split the text into multiple banners, and/or let them linger longer if that helps. This is the first instance of feedback, at least for me… I will take it into consideration! -Derek
