Both hindi and urdu descend from sanskrit which developed into suraseni prakrit, which then mixed with persian to form hindustani. Then Urdu and Hindi developed from hindustani with hindi leaning more towards the sanskrit aspect and Urdu more intensively leaning towards persian

What followed was the development of indo-islamic culture and the subsequent renaissance during the heydey of the Delhi Sultanate. It is in this time that we have the developement of Hindustani Classical Music and dance forms like Kathak.
