    I thought the days were long gone that I would get to talk about culture shock. But once again I find myself setting up a new life in another country and once again I've been hit with a whole new cultural wave. It's all different again and I am enjoying it immensely. All the usual subjects, cost of living, food, entertainment, each has its own spin in Thailand.

    Fun to see these observations! What you're describing in Thailand mirrors what many people experience over here in neighboring Vietnam. Keep the vids coming, I'm a long-time follower (of the podcast as well) and happy to see you active again!

      Thanks Henry. It's so different here. Officially see how people could get addicted to being in new places. The world is just that good.

    If you added B roll to everything you're saying your views would increase a lot as it would be more enjoyable to watch. I recommend recording these experiences as you live them. It's cool to hear about it, but it's even cooler to see it. I've been watching your channel since the beginning. Looking for to the next chapter and adventures!
    Btw you were one of the few who gave me the confidence and reassurance to move abroad. I really appreciate that.

    Thank you for your video. I really like these kinds of videos. You probably don't remember me from previous comments, but I finally made it to Japan. I paused the video at the part about the cabs to mention for anyone wanting a 1:1 comparison. I have to ride a cab to one of my work locations, and it's about $40 for a 15 minute taxi ride in Japan. My company pays for it, but wow, that's a huge difference. $6 for a 30 minute cab ride would change my whole experience in Japan.
    Sounds like you're doing okay. How's the language barrier? Thai seems like a difficult language for a native English speaker.

    First time in Thailand I loved it and had a great time and stayed for 3 months. I went again a year later and had an OK time, but on that 2nd trip the shine had worn off and I can of think of it as being a bit like a kid when he finds out Father Christmas isn't actually real... but hey Christmas is still OK but not quite as magical, and I might not be "handsome man" but hey, it's OK, it's a pantomime. I went again about 4 years later and It was pretty good. The first time I was bowled over by the new experience, the temples, the women ;) Buddhism, great Thai massages and the exchange rate on the Canadian dollar, I thought Santa was real and it made for a great time. On my 2nd trip I knew that a lot of the Thai boxing was just show boxing, many of the the 'women' actually had dicks, and even if they didn't many were out to scam. Also 2nd time I really noticed the poverty and the plastic stuff thrown around everywhere. I went to Cambodia and it was worse, so I went back to Thailand. When I got back to Canada 2nd time around I appreciated what I had much more than after I returned the 1st time... 1st time back Canada seemed so stiff and full of rules. 2nd time it seemed pretty good... Mostly I'm still a but surprised how different my experiences were having been to the same country and only a year apart and how it's a bit of role of the dice going all that way.

      Smh.. Canada is such a great place to live if you're rich.... ;p I joke, it's great if you can make a living. Finding that living is tough.

    What visa are you on for a canadian? Is there any visa process that allows you to stay for awhile and look for a job?

      @matthewsheeran 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He's on some kind of entrepreneurial start up visa: it's a new one since COVID and a good one!

    • @DaveTrippin
      @DaveTrippin  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The series of work visas are called the 'Smart Visas" and there are several different classes each with a letter designating the branch of business you are intending to do. In our case we went with the 'S' class visa. Feels like it could be a natural video topic. Maybe people would find that interesting. It is genuinely a solid way to get into the country.

    Nah Dave: no cultural shocks in Thailand only cultural pleasantries! Enjoy the cheap food including seafood and takeout! And you'll get excellent Japanese in BKK and cheap if you look. I had a full set cheap more than once in manilla Philippines. The only thing i miss about PH is the pipi pizzas: my god to die for! And you cant get fresh pipi pizza here and even if you did it would cost you an arm and a leg!

    • @DaveTrippin
      @DaveTrippin  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      haha cool. I have never heard of this pizza before. I need more pizza styles in my life. The Japanese population and influence of their stores and so on was something I wasn't expecting. Actually that could be another culture shock. The diversity of ethnic demographics here is interesting. There are so many Japanese people. Seeing the different pieces of the world fit together, good times.

    These videos are awesome! But dont you think the things and ubrr companies are cheap because the average thai earns less too.

    • @DaveTrippin
      @DaveTrippin  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's no doubt of that. Which actually leads to another potential video topic. Thai people do not expect you to tip, but unlike Japan where it could be almost taken as offensive, in Thailand people are happy to get a tip. It seems like the perfect balance. No expectation of a tip, but huge appreciation if they get one.

    With my personal experience; i found Thailand to be a problem for me. The abject filth, the mind numbing stench and most foodstuffs were making me ill all the time. I was not coping. I found the food in Vietnam was so much fresher it caused no gut problems. Japan is definitely cleaner and priced comparatively to Australia.

    • @DaveTrippin
      @DaveTrippin  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's rough, if I had stomach problems in a place I'd probably develop a healthy distrust of that place as well. I'm diligent eating vegetarian when I can to limit food problems. Haha, the smell is definitely a challenge. It is not always, but occasionally, you get blasted with a wall of shit air and that's less than pleasent. I consider it a part of the charm though, goes along with how this place is developing. Humans are getting better at balancing out the good and bad in these situations but we've got further to go before solving anything. I've also been very lucky getting a home in a place with a green ring around it so that helps as well to purify the air. Lucky for that.

      @@DaveTrippin very lucky! I do like having lots of plants and trees around me and i know i am lucky that in Australia there are many places where it occurs naturally or they encourage you to
      "plant tha fuk out of it".

      Abject filth? I don't think it's that bad. People don't litter. Just that they put garbage bags out along the streets for garbage collectors to come pick up instead of in big bins. Food-wise, I've never had problems with hot noodle soups or cook-to-order dishes in proper restaurants that aren't street carts.

    • @goyam2981
      @goyam2981 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Best time to visit would be October through February as there's no rain and the weather is not too hot. Crime depends on the area and what time of day and how much of valuable stuff you carry. Food again if your stomach is sensitive just choose proper restaurants in commercial buildings and not street stalls. Bugs, of course where there are plenty of plants, there are mosquitoes. Cockroaches on streets with wet markets and street stalls naturally. Just avoid places that smell bad.
