Hi Alain. Looks like you haven’t uploaded to TH-cam in a year! I just purchased your online “expressive mark making” lessons. I love your style and look forward to more videos. I just can’t believe that you aren’t in the “k’s” for subscribers, and I think if you keep posting on TH-cam you will get there! Thank you for sharing!
I love to see how Alain embellishes the colors from a somewhat dull picture onto his fresh colorful painting. I watch w/o sound to learn more visually watching what colors he chooses to use. Thanks for the lesson!
Exactly what I’m looking for! Love the wonderful contrast of colors and how they came together together. Loved how you talked about the placement of pieces on the board. Loved how you talked and demonstrated the drawing and reasons you do the 30 minute cor study. Playing and experimenting with colors are things I really enjoy. Love how you talked about and demonstrated as you went. You talked about a neutralized color, warmer colors, cooler etc which is the same with acrylics. It doesn’t seem as easy to get the colors that I want with acrylics as with the pastels. I’m a beginner acrylic painter and it didn’t matter to me that you’re working with pastels. I loved working with pastels many years ago and plan to revisit those pastels. Glad I kept them!
so glad you enjoyed this lesson. Yes, these concepts will translate to acrylic no problem. If you have some pastels, you should give them another try, great fun even for small works!
Love this. Reminds me that i love pastels as a medium. Im digitally painting and focusing mainly on my color senses right now, but breaking out the pastels for my studies is sounding really nice after this
Hi Alain, you are such a joy. I just stumbled upon your videos tonight. I started by watching your very informative videos on the different pastels and papers, and then your autumn tree demonstration. And now here i am on this tutorial. I was relieved to discover i had haplessly chosen a great set of starter pastels, that just arrived! You are very inspiring and i could listen to your cheerful calming voice for hours. Starting to get a bit blurry eyed though. Lol. Have to quit soon. You are a great teacher, thank you for sharing, i feel so much better prepared to play with my new pastels, i was a bit intimidated and will do some of these studies while i hunt down, or make, some of your recommended sanded paper. I feel like i am in art school! Way too much fun. I see a pathway now. I am hooked. Will go back and watch all your videos now. So glad i found you. Love these real time start to finish paintings. Thank you Alain.
Alain Hi! This is amazing. Loves it! Inspired to try the technic this very moment. You brought the painting to life. Thank you for this wonderful video.
Thank you so much for this wonderfully informative and delightful video, and for all you do, and for your art that makes the world a much more beautiful place! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, and may you always have so very many things to be thankful for!
Realy nice work, I like your style, but what about reflection of oranges on the plate/bowl? I think it is neccessary to keep some realism, now it look like separated from scene for me...
Thank you for this, I learn so much from you! The colors you chose are amazing together. I find color theory somewhat overwhelming and confusing, and never fully understand how to plan a picture using it. Can you recommend a really good book on color theory? What I want to know is why the colors you chose work so well together, and how to plan my own paintings that way. Thank you.
Hi Alain, have only just found you and pastels - a good combination I think having binge watched several videos of yours this evening! One question please, what difference does it make to the background wash when you use pastel if you a) wash it with water or b) with alcohol or does it change how the pastel goes down afterwards? Thank you :)
Thank you Mahdieh. No they are not discontinued. They moved office/warehouse in the fall which likely set their production back in the short term, but in the long term they will be better than ever. You can order from www.dakotapastels.com/products/Terry-Ludwig or the terryludwig.com Website.
@@AlainPicard thank you very much! I became upset thinking of those beautiful pastels not being available anymore. From their own website most sets are sold out unless you get individual sticks, but that's not a problem at all.
I frame under TruVue AR glass or Museum Glass, and don't need to spray due to the sanded paper. Sometimes I use Lascaux Fixative for a final set spray and it works excellent, the only fixative I currently trust as a final set
@@AlainPicard, thank you! This is so helpful. I actually found your video on recommendations of pastels (about 2 minutes after I had asked). Hope your holidays are excellent, and thank you again.
It's amazing that good values and colors can make simple strokes appear as a vibrant image. Really amazing study!!!🎉
The strong blue shadow on the edge of the bowl makes this painting for me.

wow you really are just playing around. and it turned out so powerful. I don't know why art feels like some deadly serious test
I love the small color studies the best!

Great opportunity to see your small but very much effective colour study,, Thank you sir🙏🌷
my pleasure, keep up the great work!
Realy nice work, I like your style, but what about reflection of oranges on the plate/bowl? I think it is neccessary to keep some realism, now it look like separated from scene for me...
this is a quick color study to get the color concept anchored. I would save reflective nuances for the larger work. All my best!
@@AlainPicard I understand, thank you for your response. I'm waiting for next video :)
Thank you for this very helpful and informative tutorial, Alain. Your enthusiasm is inspiring!
I'm passionate about fresh color Patricia, all the best!

I don't think it changes it, just a drying time difference Susan, the alcohol just dries quickly. All my best in your work!

Wonderfull Alain
Great video!
I have a question...
Are Terry Ludwig soft pastels discontinued?
I'm in Canada and am having a hard time ordering them.
Thank you Mahdieh. No they are not discontinued. They moved office/warehouse in the fall which likely set their production back in the short term, but in the long term they will be better than ever. You can order from www.dakotapastels.com/products/Terry-Ludwig or the terryludwig.com Website.

@@mahdieht8919 You could call Dakota Pastels and find out what's available. They are playing catch up on their orders
@@AlainPicard good idea! Thanks for helping me 💚
Thanks!
No problem!
P.S. Do you spray your pastels with fixative when complete? And frame under glass? Any advice would be appreciated!
I frame under TruVue AR glass or Museum Glass, and don't need to spray due to the sanded paper. Sometimes I use Lascaux Fixative for a final set spray and it works excellent, the only fixative I currently trust as a final set
so beautiful. I am always surprised how you put your marks without any bleeding. Thank you
Expecially with a color study you can practice making bold marks Miche, have fun!
Thank you! This is an amazing study.
Do you have a tutorial addressing when to use soft pastels v hard pastels?
Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Thanks James, I use soft for painting and hard for more sketching or detail. Soft for big marks, hard for small touches. Hope that helps!
@@AlainPicard, thank you! This is so helpful. I actually found your video on recommendations of pastels (about 2 minutes after I had asked). Hope your holidays are excellent, and thank you again.
How did you get you value study?
That is another lesson for another day!
