Hey man! I got my dream job at a ski resort here in Utah. Yesterday at work I showed my bosses your vids and now we have all built our own presses! You have inspired us to build our own boards and skis!
Bro I'm so stoked to see this stick pressed, I've been working on pouring sidewalls without bubbles for like 2 months, building a snowboard has definitely been my hardest project to date . So stoked for you man!!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌
@@GoodRoads not yet, just ordered some edge and Inserts from ski lab .... but when I'm done I'll definitely show you my progress.. thanks again for your informative videos 🙌
Hearing you talk about snowboardmaterials.com gave me a flashback, they are still in business? Awesome. Board looks great, looking forward to seeing the finished piece or even more.. seeing it on the mountain!
@@GoodRoads Fantastic. Very jealous - no snow in my bit of the UK and local indoor slope all in lockdown. Not been on a board since last Feb. Stoked for your adventure though! I've followed the whole thing. Keeping me going until I can get on snow - even artificial snow.
Well done and congratulations Chris, you nailed it. ‘Also noticed you poured the mixed resin into a shallow tray, which helps manage the thermal acceleration. The stressful part is done - now onto finishing and riding. 😎
I am loving this series, also cant wait for your bass build, im starting a bass soon so would be good to see what you do different. Keep up the great content.
Oh wow, I didn't realize people were looking forward to that. I think it's going to be a little while before I tackle it but I can at least start cooking up ideas. Thanks and good luck with your build!
Good work! I am in the middle of making a board too. You give me inspiration. I am going to try aligning my base and core by super parts of the edge to the aluminum sheet and cutting notches in the sides of my core to align to small blocks also super glued to the aluminum ahead of time.
In terms of your unheated shop situation, in the business shop I use we've got installed these infrared tube heaters, which have been the absolute best thing ever. Complete overkill for the size of your shop, but perhaps something that could be very similar but appropriately sized might be getting a couple of strip food warmers to hang above you from the celling. Aside from just heating the shop, there's also some pretty good utility uses which is the main reason I have experience with them. I use mine somewhat frequently for a drying/curing lamp. I pull it out sometimes for keeping paint warm enough to dry in the winter, but I'll use it frequently when working with polyester resin, and occasionally when working with epoxy resins. The infrared heat is nice for being able to keep your project nice and warm without having to heat up all of the air and surfaces in the whole shop. Also, I wanted to bring up Signal Snowboards Every Third Thursday youtube series. I expect you're probably familiar, but I did want to bring it up just in case. Lots of experimental snowboard builds, sometimes just for lulz, but often times trying things that are a real challenge and you get to see some of the trial and error and other problem solving in action from people that have quite a lot of experience. The Snowboard Build is looking really good. Probably had exercise some discipline to put the board down and finish this weeks video instead of just finishing this board and riding it.
Yeah, the every third thursday series is rad. It used to be longer format on a different platform, but I think it got caught up in some licensing stuff when they tried moving it to youtube. That's just speculation. I've got a plan to build out, insulate, and heat a shop space I'm just waiting on funds, time, and the ability to get materials up my icy dirt road. And you're 100% right about putting the board down to edit the video. It's done now though! Just needs an edge grind and a wax
No reason in particular. Walnut is a really porous wood and that top layer of glass was soaking wet with resin so I figured the epoxy would get into it fine. It would probably be safer to wet out both sides
I'm so happy the lay up worked. I love the walnut top sheet. Nice save with the base sheet as well. I'm curious how that happened. just a brain fart? math error when making the sidewall channels?
I didn't leave myself much room for error with the channels and forgot about the small amount of width that the edges would add. No big deal, I managed to work around it, next time I can just route a wider channel with a different bit
Stoked for you! That cure time is always super stressful wondering if you did everything right. You don't realize how bad it is till you make your first board either hahaha.
100%. I've done layups before but nothing this stressful. I think its the requirement that everything line up correctly, even if you did the whole layup right things can still get misaligned and ruin the outcome
@@GoodRoads Definitely! I always worried something would be a few mm off. The more boards you do they easier it gets but even after over 10 boards I still feared it hahaha.
Thank you so much for your videos! 👍👍 Now I plan to make my own board and with the help from you it should be easy 😎 But I have a question too: did the sidewall come loose in the layup?
Good eye! They did at the very nose and tail of the board. It's kind of a long story, I actually had to pour the sidewalls twice because they didn't cure correctly the first time around. I did my best to clean out the channels but it was difficult at the nose and tail which is why I think they separated there. However, I'm not worried about it. There is so much resin in and around the sidewalls where they separated, and there's more glass than core at that point in the board. I'm sure it will be fine at least for a while. You should be able to pour your urethane the same way I did and if the cure goes well I don't think you'll run into the same problem.
Sweet! I’m so happy for you! So there is no Vinyl top sheet over the walnut. Will you finish the walnut with Polyurethane or oil or some sort of wood finish?
Good job man! Maybe you already experienced how tricky is to detach the tape from the ptex base material... I did the same in my build, using some pieces of double sided tape and I went crazy to remove it. Bye
Hey Chris I bet you sure were glad that you got the resin from snowboard materials or at least your wife was! It doesn't stink half as bad as the other one you were using right?!
Longboarding? Yeah, I did a bit of that a while back. I had a nasty fall and have been scared to go after any real speed since, but I do like it. There's nothing really like being in a tuck
@@GoodRoads Really? Yeah it’s pretty dangerous this summer I bumped at 20 km/h against an olive tree in Tuscany with my parents who watched me shredding from the car (gave my mom and heart attack aha) , I too make my own boards even tough they’re not as great as yours. With covid and stuff I wanted to snowboard so badly your videos inspired me a lot, love from Italy (Milan)
Hi Chris I pressed my snowboard and I was ready to wax it but there was super glue still on the base material since I glued the metal edges. Did you encounter the same problem? I tried wiping it down with acetone but it didn’t do anything.
Congrats, just to let you know with this videos now I want to build once again snowboards, I just degigned the files and I will send it to a friend of mine that have a wakeboard company to cnc milled the core, there is a better and safer way to fix the base and the core in the mould, you simply need to cut the base and the core with a notch something like this _____/\______ and fix on the mould with screws a negative notch (you can do it with base material or whatever else you have on site), in this way you will be totally sure that core and base will be centered in the mould. You can think about vacuum to avoid bubbles on the topsheet...
Oh yeah, there's still tons I can do to improve for next time. Alignment is a big once I'm concerned about so the idea with the notches is cool, thanks for the tip!
The top at that point would be fiberglass and resin, which you could do but it would have a short lifespan. Epoxy resin is UV sensitive and degrades in sunlight over time and a big part of what the topsheet does is protect the resin from the sun
The deck is flat between the feet with a slight rocker in the nose before the end turns up. I've got a video in the series on how I made the mold, but I basically eyeballed my curves

Oh yes! Me too!

You did it Chris🎉
Very nice! You had me worried there with your concerns that it was another failed attempt. Glad there wasn't more money and tears shed 😁
You and me both!
Hey Chris, you did it!! So happy to see the great result!! Can’t wait to see it finished and running!
Thanks bud, me too!
I’m so glad you jumped right back in. Can’t wait to see the finished board and for you to get a day on the hill on it!
Very cool!! Loved watching you unwrap it. Like a present 🎁
It was such a relief
Congrats! Can't wait to see the finishing touches!

You totally did it! This just keeps getting better. Can't wait for the maiden voyage video. 🍻
Yeeeeah!!! Congratulations, very inspiring video!
Super stoked for you! I could have really used that thing out here yesterday.
I hear you dude, we are getting dumped on and my park style board is just not equipped for it. Gotta get this guy finished and get floating!
Found your powsurfer build yesterday and now I’m binging all your vids lol
Thanks dude! Enjoy!

Congrats Chris!
Excellent - finished and on to the snow ===》
Got it out on the snow today! It rides GOOD!

The pinstripe was a perfect solution to a frustrating problem. Is there a reason not to wet out the bottom side of the topsheat?

I'm using a spar urethane, which I think is like a polyurethane but supposed to be more weather resistant, and flexible

YES!!!!!
