  • Here’s the definitive step by step guide to learning those all important knots you’re going to need to be able to tie when you come sailing.
    1. Round turn and two half hitches.
    2. Reef knot.
    3. Figure of 8 knot.

I'd like to learn to sail with this guy :) I'd was thrown into sailing about 30 years ago with my neighbour who had a racing yacht. At the time, I thought me and my wife had been invited out for a day on his yacht. We drove up to Ambleside in Cumbria, instead of my wife coming, he just wanted me to go with him on my own.
So off to Unwaters we set. We rowed out to his boat. At that point he raised the mainsail, and asked me to hold on the boom, which I did, as he raised the anchor. What he didn't say was to let go of it, as the boat steered off, but in the direction of another boat. When he realised what was happening he turned to me with a grim look and told me to let go, which I promptly did, the the boom knocked him on his arse.
Well, I felt, really bad about it, not seeing what was going on, but knew I'd done something quite wrong. So off we sailed, no real harm done, down the lake, which was fairly relaxed. We had full sail, and headed down Ulswater, often needing to lean over to keep the boat upright, which seemed fun, and never a problem.
Well the worst was next to come. He turned the boat to head back up wind, and put me in charge of untying and tightening the Gib. It was a brief explanation, about 30 secs. So the plan was we were going to tack back up the lake, well as you experts will know, Ulswater isn't really that wide, off we set, so as we are underway he said, when I shout "standby to come about" I was to untie the Gib, release and swap from port to starboard, at 90 miles an hour !! There was another Yacht, he was trying to catch on the lake.
After the fist turn went reasonably OK, it didn't seem like 5 mins and we were coming about again. So he's also now shouting faster, so I'm doing really well at this, thinking though, this was supposed to be a nice day out on his sail boat, all of us. Instead I had Captain fecking Bligh at the back of me shouting orders. "Faster" "Stand by to come about "
All was going well, me hating this by now, and then disaster struck, the line got caught around my foot, he'll yelling as we are heading toward shore, and I'm trying to get this freaking line off my ankle. Anyways, I solved it, but after that, I never said another words, all the way back, all I could think about was Mutiny, and I'd not been sailing half a day.
We got back to his berth OK, he seems miffed we'd lost to the other fast yacht, but still managed to ask me if I'd enjoyed it. Well I lied and said yes, saying to myself, never again !! And I never did.
On returning to Ambleside, we all met up and had tea, me and the wife headed off home. So she asked me how was it. I said never again, I said " Stand turned into Captain Bligh, reincarnated. She laughed, I was used to taking orders in the Fire Service, but this was like my 12 week training, followed by 2 years probation and 5 years to become a qualified Firefighter, all over again, but in one day.
Stan will be gone now. RIP old friend.
