Vexillology Volume II:
Most people agree that having text on a flag is a bad thing, since it completely defeats the purpose of having a flag in the first place. However, this rule has a fex exceptions. It's a phenomenon that I call the "Colorado Effect". Let's look at a few of those!

I do like the plot also

As someone from Colorado, I love my flag. It has such a good color scheme and rather than using the C as a letter, it's a symbol. Truly the best US flag.
As someone from Not the USA,
Sorry but New Mexico's better
@lbgamer6166 I love all of the Mesa Verde brothers flags, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and even now Utah got a cool new design.

In studying flag design I've come up with my own personal criteria for text on flags: Text on flags is good so long as it doesn't need to be read to be understood. Colorado's flag having text on it feels like a technicality because you don't need to know it has a C for Colorado in order to appreciate it. Brazil's flag is good despite having text because that text is so small and the Brazilian flag so iconic that it has no real impact.
My go-to example of how to use text on flags will always be Iran and Saudi Arabia. Iran's flag has highly stylized text along its bands that give it a very unique feel and helps to "overlap" those bands, which is very unique. The tulip symbol in the middle is also technically text, but it feels more like an additional layer of symbolism for those who *can* read it. The Saudi Arabian flag's text, on the other hand, is completely meaningless to those who can't read it.
I've never really thought about the emblem on Iran's flag being text before, that's incredibly well hidden!
@@ExtraInExile wow I never knew you were able to heart and reply to comments while being incinerated to the shadow rea- I mean Brazil
@@ExtraInExile as a Brazilian, I don’t think the text really matters to understand our flag, and the diamond with circle sky is so iconic by itself. I have a question though, from vexillophile to vexillophile. Does the flag of Rio Grande do Sul pass the NAVA test?
@@yourlocalfloridaman6251 I don't think so, coat of arms are a no-go!
@@AntiAzovIndividual brazil is NOT ðe world of light
For the Japanese Prefectural flags, there are a few things I'd like to say:
Nagasaki's flag doesn't normally have it's name on it, it's merely a variant. Apparently Oita does this variant too. It's also not the only one to use latin letters, both Okinawa and Osaka have the letter "O" on their flag. This makes sense, as it's supposed to be what they call "Roma-ji", which they use to transliterate their language to make it more understandable to foreigners.
There are a few that don't rely on this effect: Aomori has a map of the Prefecture itself, Ibaraki's symbol is apparently a rosebud, Yamagata's is three mountains and Ehime's flag doesn't even have the mono background with a symbol style, instead going for a more western-style appearance.
On the other hand, the flag of Niigata prefecture actually mixes and matches writing systems, the "Nii" is in Kanji, while the "Gata" is in Katakana, making an interesting effect.
As a Coloradan,
I’m very happy with this video!
Please keep up the amazing Content🎉!
This is going to be the next big countryball channel in a year or so, I can feel it.

*Colorado has C & O on it's flag, not only C!*
Representating the abbreviations of the name of the state - CO
Which means that in 5:44 you wrote "Coolorado" - that's a cooler Colorado.
EVEN BETTER

Exactly!
That intro flashback was relatable.
I hope you mean the coffee and not the "getting flung across the room and passing out" thing
Oh wow Monsieur Z is here! The creator of his amazing (and definitely apolitical unbiased) TH-cam channel about geopolitics!
@@ExtraInExile Coffee thing? Oh, right! That's exactly what I meant.
Perhaps it depends on the writing script. I feel like the Arabic, Mandarin and Japanese Scripts look nice on flags unlike the latin script
3/10 episode, not enough drug usage.
Good idea! Can't wait to get high
@@ExtraInExileYEAH!
As a Colorado native, I too agree that Colorado’s flag is amazing 🙏
Hello! So I was born in Colorado, and I have explanation for the yellow circle and more on it!
Blue lines: Sky
C: Colorado
Yellow Circle: Sun, Gold, might stand for the o in colorado idk
Finally! Someone who agrees that Colorado’s flag is awesome! Keep up the great videos!

Your art style is really good, you need more subs
Happy Birthday my guy and please continue making great content
Good vid. I hope more flags with Colorado Effect comes out in the future
Just one more reason Colorado is the best state in the union,we got a flag phenomenon named after us
💪😤💯
Bruh how have I not realised that is a C on Colorado's flag
Also happy birthday!
Oh hey, happy birthday too.
Didn't expect you here
Happy Birthday your content is awsome
Happy birthday!
I’m already subbed so I guess it was an early present XD
3:18 words cannot not describe the befuddlement i have towards what you just said. also i, despite knowing arabic which according to the exception you made puts said rule out of the equation i still think the iraq flag is good for one reason, it’s stylized arabic which is important, because arab culture and specifically arab art emphasizes caligraphy and so a toned down stylization of arabic on the flag of an arabic country is actually justified
I do not see how it is a "different" language if it commonly understood by the people of the country it represents.
🎉🎉🎉happy birthday!🎉🎉🎉(I already subbed)

There’s a flag you missed that also has the Colorado effect: Ohio, there’s an O (and a C if you look hard enough) the O also represents the state tree, the Buckeye Tree
Couldn't give you a sub for you Birthday because I already did that, but at least I could ring the bell so happy birthday ^^

So glad I’m in Colorado🥰🥰🥰🥰
Maybe you could mention maps on flags. Aomori’s flag is a map of Aomori, and Brasil’s also has a weird map thing n
6:47 these look more like logos. The last one in particular looks like the Ubuntu logo.
There we have it: Linux distro balls.
I thought that the old Rwanda flag was a joke when I saw it
Another vid!!

Would Saudi Arabia be another example of Colorado effect?
Are the Japanese flags good? These flags could sell me insurance.
I think one thing you should have touched on more is caligraphy. A lot of Arabic flags have text not just on them but like the Saudi flag as a main feature, but to me at least they are still good because it's written in an artistic style
The text on Iraq's flag is written in a stylized script (Kufic), so I just used that one as an example for all non-Latin ones. Saudi Arabia's flag is definitely a good one as well!
@@ExtraInExile Ngl didn't realize the Iraqi flag is supposed to be calligraphic lol, to me the letters just look too blocky for that.
Also another place where you see such flags is the Byzantine Empire, specifically with the Paleologoi dynasty with the 4 B flag with the Bs representing King of kings rules over kingdoms and the Paleologian eagle using a monogram of the family's name in its center
7:30 "Extra and EBM commit a war crime" lol
I didn't know my state had a effect
When is he going to heal ?
I love the Colorado flag
i think the bottom of nagasaki’s flag doesnt have the japanese word tho?
I would say our province flags aren’t half bad. Newfoundland, Nunavut, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Saskatchewan are easily the best. New Brunswick’s flag just needs to be made simpler to be perfect. As for the rest they either need a do over “cough Ontario cough” or trip out some complicated stuff to make it appealing.

Text on flags is acceptable if that text is calligraphy
6:22 which 4chan post?
Another way of making an ok flag with writing, at least to people who cant read your script, is to use calligraphic techniques. Like the flags of Saudi Arabia, the Taliban and Iran all contain arabic/farsi calligraphy and dont look all that bad, not a huge fan of Iraq though not gonna lie. Likewise Chinese dynastic flags, not that they necessarily ever existed as shown in the likes of EU4, tend to be portrayed as a single character on a banner, which also seems to work quite well.
NAGA FRICKING SAKI!!!
Me: isnt there supposed to be a nuke on top of the flag?
Ohio has a huge “O” on it as well.
Someone make the Colorado effect Wikipedia page. *_I need it_*
Yes please
the reason nobody talks a bout is because it's not a goddamn thing. its just text on flags you happen to not hate.
Real
serbia has 4 cyrillic ss on its flag (they r written like the latin c). it stands for samo sloga srbina spasava (only unity saves serbs) and they are very nicely disguised as fire steels.
happy birthday btw, i hope u get out of exile one day!
Ooh I had no idea, I always associated those with being a leftover of the Byzantines. Thank you!

They used the text as a graphic element, not just used it as plain text.
The Colorado flag is Coolarado.

Do Arabs feels as weird as we see the letters on their flags???
They got some colours and then "God is Great" "God is the only God and Mahoma his profet"
It depends on the type of art
script art is the way for writing letters
there's many type of artistic scripted on of famous is the on used in KSA flag it cool and its take the lowest area as possible
Why are so many US state flags bad?
A seal on a blank bedsheet is simple. Colorado had one for a day but it disappeared. Then a company who had designed most u.s state flags came to Colorado with the same pattern of three stripes with white in the middle but instead of blue it was red. And instead of the classic C it was the state seal. Luckily found that flag was never adopted as literally no one liked it. Eventually someone took inspiration and fix that flag makeing it the beautiful blue white and golden Red C
