I beg to differ on one point with Bruce Riedel, USA didnot stand with India in Kargil War, it was Israel, in fact when India requested for help with satellite imagery of the border posts, USA scoffed at Indians, result of which India developed later its own positioning system

The United States pushed Pakistan to withdraw as soon as possible. President Clinton was firm in his discussion with Sharif: get out because this is your fault. This was the first time the United States took India's side in a conflict with Pakistan.

You have a lot to learn and need to understand that restraint has always been India's virtue but it is limited.Pakistan is not keeping anything at bay, although I'm glad that the pak leadership thinks so.The lack of any action or retaliation is because of past Indian leadership failures and not in the capability of your third rate military. The day India decides to retaliate you can be rest assured the pipe dreams of your pak army will be exposed and nothing on earth will be able to stop that retaliation. If you live in pakistan Its in your best interest that this doesn't happen.

This interview is stunning in its superficiality! Especially with regard to the pre and post colonial causes of Pakistani obsession with India. Brookings should have put him in a debate with Christene Fair, who is miles ahead of him on the issue. Pakistan still sticks with terrorism simply because it has worked for in 1947, when it was able to take over half of Kashmir with similar tactics; that are a mixture of deceit, perfidy and outright lies. It's even succeeded in defeating a UN resolution by perverting it to its advantage. It's professed insecurity about being swallowed by anti Muslim, hindu India is also belied by India's peaceful Coexistence with Bangladesh (erstwhile east Pakistan & with more Muslims than in Pakistan), even though it has no army, airforce or navy worth the name & is surrounded by India on 3 sides.

Now that the US has held back the support there is a chance that things will come on track with or without the war. But it seems that the end of the conflict is nearing. The complete issue being ignored. There is no point of this book or this discussion if the original content n the documents are not refered to and I think the solution is only and only if ICJ gets all facts and resolve it once n for. Important for Pakistan today is to recognise pak army will not any of your dreams to come true. Thanks US to keep them very well fed n funded. If the world wants to save itself from this peril, US should take lead to find an alternative to petrol, divide Pakistan into tolerant and intolerant regions (countries) and work with countries of the region. India hasn't won a war on its own. Check who supported them during these wars Pakistan fought on there own. Look Muslim don't believe in wining and losing wars. The reason you fear Muslims is because Muslim fear no one or any super power. Muslim if they wanted to can take over the world in 1 year. Which proves Islam is not what you and your friends would say it is but what you say it is will one day come because of what you say islam is.

  • @nathansekhar2840

Bruce is a brilliant analyst. At this stage it reached Status quo. For both India & Pakistan time was ripe with the Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is from Pakistan & Gen Musharaff the President of Pakistan was from India despite this advantage the Status quo continued because both hated each other & defied the law of International Relations that there are no permanent friends or enemies but Permanant Interest. Kashmir was a bone of Contention. With Modi Team taking over & winning a Majority the Matters changed. He said No talks unless's cross border Terrorism was contained in Pakistan. His next rational was WHO governs Pakistan the civilian Govt at Islamabad or the Pakistan Army establishment at Rawalpindi. Kargil illegal war in 1999 made it clear. The US changed Partners & its role in South Asia gradually declined with the withdrawal at Iraq and gradually in Afghanistan. India engaged the Muslim kingdoms of the Middle East as these were within the range of the Indian Missile System that the earlier financing of Terrorism & the Pakistan War Economy would not be tolerated. This Team of Politicians & beaucrats had done away from Pasificsm & Restrain & Would not show the other cheek but would give a resounding slap. The Policy of Offensive Defence was initiated. The 1999 Kargil invasion by Pakistan Army resulted in the India Isreal Milatary cooperation. Pakistan having lost its Milk cow the U S fell to the debt trap of PRC like SriLanka China weaved the Strong of Pearls around India with Navel docking rights at Gawadhar, Hamantota & rail link to Nepal from Chineese Tibet. India realised that China gradually started owning these bases & the real enemy was China. The Naval Alliance with the US + Japan + Australia was formulated to keep China to aggresion to be Contained especially in The South China Seas & Indian Ocean to protect the ASEAN grouping Taiwan + Vietnam + Philippines, The Middle East Muslim kingdoms looked towards the Indian Navy role to protect their Outer perimeter as the Pakistan Ex Army men under Raheel Shareef. Failed to prevent the Iran drone attack of Aramco Operations & lost 2 bases to huti rebels in Yemen. Pakistan today depends on the PLA in Pakistan not only to protect the Chineese Workers but Pakistan itself, Nathan Sekhar Sydney, Australia.

I heard long ago, as a child that the noble kings of ancient Indian (Bharath) didn't invade neighbouring countries, burn, loot, rape and kill, subjugate and exploit like the marauders of the recent times. Our civilization had several centuries to learn from mustakes and evolve a peaceful way of life. Our poorer neighbours are supposed to have either asked to (or agreed to) enter an agreement to become part of the whole empire. The rulers of neighbouring, smaller kingdoms got to continue to rule their land and people and continue with their way of life, i.e. food, clothing, religion, etc.
Thats how our emperors are supposed to have expanded their empires to far off lands... There was cultural exchange and exchange of science and technology both ways..
