I told my potheads that once they passed the initial MEPS drug test, I didn't care how much weed they smoked before they shipped. In Hindsight, that was a dumb thing to say. Still listen to his advice today, and when I’m feeling particularly down or angry at the injustice of how life is I can sit down and listen to his words from all those years ago, and know that I’m not alone. Glad you’re here to tell the tale, that Iraq is war, man that was a travesty. So many guys coming back with ptsd and their limbs blown off, what is it George said. “War is rich men sending the poor and middle class men to fight and die so the rich guys can keep their land?” Something to that effect.
Hey brother, I was a Marine Infantryman for 11 years, was with the first group of Marines to go into Afghanistan in October of 2001, then went to the Invasion of Iraq in 2003, then back into Fallujah November of 2004, Ramadi in 2006, and a couple other deployments. You didn't miss a thing. I lost friends came home a different man, was wounded and after years, of being home, I am still making peace with things. But would rather it be me dealing with these things then someone that couldn't handle the memories. We ended up where we were supposed to be. That is awesome you made it to where you did

on 911 I was in my Army housing on Fort Knox KY and my husband was at work as a Drill Sargent for Basic training training new recruits, when the planes hit the towers he was faced with telling these new soldiers that their Army career will start off at war and the mental and emotional turmoil was tremendous for these young people plus my husband knowing he had to get them ready to do what they were about have to do. Those men have reached out to him to thank him for everything he instilled in him, and they still stay in contact with him to this day. He retired from the Army after 20 years but still works for them as a civilian.

I’m glad the Lord had other plans for you ❤ The reason every person shares where they were and what they thought or felt at 9-11, isn’t because everyone wants to make it about themselves. It’s the opposite. Recollecting that moment when we ALL had our lives changed forever, is important for everyone. It’s a universal commonality.
Dusty thank you , my husband and I laugh so hard watching you one night we couldn't go to sleep one of us would start laughing again and they it all started against got 4 hours sleep. So tired the next day but we had so much fun .

I have had a good honest life. 12 years in the army. I thank God that cop did that for me. I'm afraid to imagine my life if he would have charged me. Thank you sir! And yes I went to Iraq, twice. It wasn't that fun, but I'm still glad I did it.

I am following you Dusty! I was in the Marines back in 74” and I was clean going in, coming out of it I wouldn’t want any testing to be done. Bales wash up on the S Carolina beaches every day and if you get one you also get a Shute load of buddies. I am very happy to see young people going into comedy and being good at it. Also, I had similar recruiter/physical experience, also got stopped by cop on interstate weekend before I came in, was f*cked up, I told him I was starting boot camp the next week, and he gave me grace. I think it’s true that sometimes something really small and stupid can be on one’s record for life! However, maybe the moral of the story is that sometimes that makes one more creative to do what one loves for a living! And your now a comedian making so many of us laugh! What a gift that is for us all!
The local police dept in my Alabama hometown tried to do the same to me 1989. Was waiting to go into marine corps when they got the itch to take me down with 5 different minor in consumption charges in a 5 week period. (I was old enough to die for my country but not drink, which is an amazing thought in itself) Only difference is i just got waivers, but yes sometimes I understand the hate for cops. They ruin many kids lives forever, like all my friends i grew up with. I was able to go in for 6 yrs and change my life for the better. Good story Dusty.

There's no situation a cop won't make worse. They don't, nor are they obligated to protect and serve. They are narcissistic, road pirates, and tyrants. That cop didn't ruin your life, but he messed up your life for a few years and hurt you financially. He didn't give a flying fxck. That cop probably never told you why he pulled you over. He did nothing but violate your rights, and I'm sure he enjoyed it because their ego's feed on it. I'm glad everything worked out in the long run for you brother. You are a great comedian. My nephew, Sgt. Micheal Charles Taylor was in boot camp in the Army when 911 happened. It wasn't until 2 years later he was sent to Iraq. He was promoted to Sargent during his tour. Unfortunately, he was killed in action about 2 weeks before he was to come home. R.I.P. my hero. 💪

You got lucky! I was in the Corps at the time your speaking of and I was trying to get kicked out. I hated it, told them I lied to get in which was true my lying recruiters told me to lie. Well they just typed up some waivers and kept me in. I threatened other Marines with ass whoopins' until they had to get restraining orders on me, got caught drinking underage, went awol for over 32 hours whilst MP's were looking for me after jumping out of a 2nd story barracks room that was being guarded by two Marines inside. I landed and ran towards the bushes that lined the building, I ran inside the shadows till I got to a friend's barracks about a mile away and we went out in Japan and partied! Still didn't get kicked out. Some guys have all the luck. Ended up serving my whole term of four years.
This was awesome. I was also arrested for minor consumption. I had 4 months til my 21st and I blew a .02. After working for 36 hours in 2 days. Took me to jail towed my car etc. my name is also dusty. Also bought a trailer for $1500 lived in it for 2 years and sold it for $4000.
That is wild and extremely similar to mine I graduated in the summer of 2001, immediately signed for the corp, trained all summer got pulled over high AF, cool ass cop though, grilled me and my buddy for what seemed like a couple hours, followed me home and called it a night, 2 days later 911 broke out and I was still able to with draw. Pretty summed up story.
I almost signed to the air force. Aced the meps/asvab testing and they said I could study to be basically anything I want while in there. Fortunately, a weed possession ticket from high school got me canceled from that future. I eventually got my life together and now making six figure income working in cyber security as an architect. Dodged a bullet there. lol.
I was an Army Recruiter during this time. This was a very interesting story from an applicant's perspective. I knew exactly what you described about every detail about the process at the Recruiting Station and MEPS. BTW, Doc was looking to see if you had hemorrhoids 🙂 Also, the cop was an A-Hole and your Lawyer screwed you. You would've gotten the same thing, (if not a better deal) with a public defender or no lawyer. And your recruiter sucked too. I would've talked to the prosecutor myself, even though we weren't supposed to and I could've gotten in trouble. But you would've shipped on time with all of your promised benefits. And if you waned to be a cook, you could've said you smoked weed before. Most recruiters don't know that. You just wouldn't have been able to get a medical job or a job requiring a Security Clearance. Things are much different now tho. It may not even matter at all now. Great Story. I've helped several people enlist with very similar stories. We lost a few folks after 9/11 and it sucked at the time, but for everyone we lost, we probably gained 10 more who wanted go. As a matter of fact, in just a couple of weeks time, there were no Infantry Slots left and the waiting period to ship to Basic Tng was 10-12 months, depending on the job. And the bonuses went away for awhile because we didn't need them. BTW, if you got a bonus and was able to chose your duty assignment, you did pretty good on that ASVAB test.

I was very good at my job 🙂Other than knowing the "Why's", your description of the process was very accurate. For example, that questionnaire you filled out prior to talking to the Station Commander is called the "Hot Seat". It's designed to make sure you don't say anything stupid at MEPS. 1 slip of the tongue could permanently disqualify you from all branches. When that happens, it becomes a big waste of time for everyone involved in the process. I have many stories of dumb people saying dumb stuff at MEPS. Most of which was unintentional but they got nervous and wouldn't shut up. And yes, your recruiter was either new or not very good. BTW, You're a very funny guy. I love Comedy, which brought me here in the 1st place. So I agree, everything worked out the way it was supposed to. If you ever do a show in Indianapolis, I'm gonna try and go. Take Care.

The local recruiters were pushing , “The Buddy System”, so my best friend and I decided to go for it. I won’t bore you and your fans with the story, but it was pretty bad and scary as 19 year old young women. Man, I’m glad it didn’t happen. We’re havin a good time!! Great story Dusty. Man, they really threw the book at you. I think the lesson to be learned is how hard someone will screw a kids life up to look like a big shot, honestly. Like yeah maybe you decided you didn’t want to go to the army after all, but that cop took that choice away from you. So a lot of that drinking and self destructive path you got on happened over something silly. Makes me wonder what would’ve happened to a kid that didn’t have the money to borrow to avoid a 6 month sentence and what would’ve happened to their life then. The trauma of going to jail, and what that does to somebody, trying to rebuild a life with limited job prospects because of a criminal record. That one night can and does ruin some peoples lives for good. That cop could’ve taken you home and given you a warning but he was more interested in bullying then he was a kids future. Anyways, you make me a lot of people laugh and I’m glad you’re around. Maybe everything really does happen for a reason.

In reality joining the military hardly ever sets changes someone putting them on the right path. Some people are making good choices but born into a situation and military service gives them an out but people looking for opportunities to smoke or drink and drive still look for them in the military and then really jack up their life with an administrative separation. Your Army tests and recruiter sound very familiar, lol. I did a hitch in the Yankee army in the 80s. Learned to work in the operating room and it was a cool job and a great experience and how I met my wife. When you grow up in a trailer in Alabama there aren't many choices.
My grandson was born on 9/11. My daughter went into labor as we were supposed to be going to my father’s funeral a few years ago. That’s my 9/11 2.0, not to take away from the travesty of Patriots day. But true beauty came from truly horrible circumstances and I can only be thankful. Btw, my father was a cook in the army…
I had a similar experience being a 2000 graduate... I wanted to be an aircraft mechanic and join the AirForce reserves. I got a job with an airline in 2000 and a year later everything changed. I didn't go to the airforce, but stayed with the airline for 8 years.
My older brother went through a very similar thing around the same time. Joined the marines but couldn't stop partying, got arrested and didn't end up joining. Then 9/11... I think he was set to be one of the people who would have been tasked with disarming IEDs, though I don't think he knew that when he signed up.
You know, I hear that the army is STILL looking for qualified Pickle Gazers. The trick is, you don't want them getting overly attached in the course of their duties.

I have to say though, I'm glad you didn't have to fight in the Middle East because that might have changed a lot of things for you, possibly not in a good way. God does work in mysterious ways. 26:22... I had a physical reaction to the phrase "just in time to see the second plane crash into the building". My stomach dropped and I nearly cried. It is amazing how 21 years later it is still traumatic just to remember and I don't even have a personal link...

Similar story with delayed entry. This is 1981 and I'm leaving for boot camp in a day or 2 or 3, don't remember. I get pulled over on my motorcycle with gf. I'm hammered, speeding and no baffles in exhaust. I accidentally give the officer my military ID instead of DL because I'm hammered. Something was said about leaving for boot camp. He hands me back my military ID and said " good luck with that," laughs and takes off! What a difference for you 20 years later.
To any young person thinking of joining the military: deny everything and never waver in the denials. Deny drug use, ANY medical problems, and anything that didn’t result in a written report.
Once you're in. Report every medical issue and get a copy of everything the medics/corpsman write down. Don't let them bully you into not going to sick call.

Also, I had similar recruiter/physical experience, also got stopped by cop on interstate weekend before I came in, was f*cked up, I told him I was starting boot camp the next week, and he gave me grace. I think it’s true that sometimes something really small and stupid can be on one’s record for life! However, maybe the moral of the story is that sometimes that makes one more creative to do what one loves for a living! And your now a comedian making so many of us laugh! The local police dept in my Alabama hometown tried to do the same to me 1989. Was waiting to go into marine corps when they got the itch to take me down with 5 different minor in consumption charges in a 5 week period. (I was old enough to die for my country but not drink, which is an amazing thought in itself) Only difference is i just got waivers, but yes sometimes I understand the hate for cops. They ruin many kids lives forever, like all my friends i grew up with. I was able to go in for 6 yrs and change my life for the better. Good story Dusty.

There's no situation a cop won't make worse. They don't, nor are they obligated to protect and serve. They are narcissistic, road pirates, and tyrants. That cop didn't ruin your life, but he messed up your life for a few years and hurt you financially. He didn't give a flying fxck. That cop probably never told you why he pulled you over. He did nothing but violate your rights, and I'm sure he enjoyed it because their ego's feed on it.

My nephew, Sgt. Micheal Charles Taylor was in boot camp in the Army when 911 happened. It wasn't until 2 years later he was sent to Iraq. He was promoted to Sargent during his tour. Unfortunately, he was killed in action about 2 weeks before he was to come home.

You got lucky! I was in the Corps at the time your speaking of and I was trying to get kicked out. I hated it, told them I lied to get in which was true my lying recruiters told me to lie. Well they just typed up some waivers and kept me in. I threatened other Marines with ass whoopins' until they had to get restraining orders on me, got caught drinking underage, went awol for over 32 hours whilst MP's were looking for me after jumping out of a 2nd story barracks room that was being guarded by two Marines inside. I landed and ran towards the bushes that lined the building, I ran inside the shadows till I got to a friend's barracks about a mile away and we went out in Japan and partied! Still didn't get kicked out. Some guys have all the luck. Ended up serving my whole term of four years.
If you have the right stuff, they overlook some of the minor bs lol!
This was awesome. I was also arrested for minor consumption. I had 4 months til my 21st and I blew a .02. After working for 36 hours in 2 days. Took me to jail towed my car etc. my name is also dusty. Also bought a trailer for $1500 lived in it for 2 years and sold it for $4000.

That is wild and extremely similar to mine I graduated in the summer of 2001, immediately signed for the corp, trained all summer got pulled over high AF, cool ass cop though, grilled me and my buddy for what seemed like a couple hours, followed me home and called it a night, 2 days later 911 broke out and I was still able to with draw. Pretty summed up story.
I almost signed to the air force. Aced the meps/asvab testing and they said I could study to be basically anything I want while in there. Fortunately, a weed possession ticket from high school got me canceled from that future. I eventually got my life together and now making six figure income working in cyber security as an architect. Dodged a bullet there. lol.

I was an Army Recruiter during this time. This was a very interesting story from an applicant's perspective. I knew exactly what you described about every detail about the process at the Recruiting Station and MEPS. BTW, Doc was looking to see if you had hemorrhoids 🙂 Also, the cop was an A-Hole and your Lawyer screwed you. You would've gotten the same thing, (if not a better deal) with a public defender or no lawyer. And your recruiter sucked too. I would've talked to the prosecutor myself, even though we weren't supposed to and I could've gotten in trouble. But you would've shipped on time with all of your promised benefits. And if you waned to be a cook, you could've said you smoked weed before. Most recruiters don't know that. You just wouldn't have been able to get a medical job or a job requiring a Security Clearance. Things are much different now tho. It may not even matter at all now. Great Story. I've helped several people enlist with very similar stories. We lost a few folks after 9/11 and it sucked at the time, but for everyone we lost, we probably gained 10 more who wanted go. As a matter of fact, in just a couple of weeks time, there were no Infantry Slots left and the waiting period to ship to Basic Tng was 10-12 months, depending on the job. And the bonuses went away for awhile because we didn't need them. BTW, if you got a bonus and was able to chose your duty assignment, you did pretty good on that ASVAB test.

I was very good at my job 🙂Other than knowing the "Why's", your description of the process was very accurate. For example, that questionnaire you filled out prior to talking to the Station Commander is called the "Hot Seat". It's designed to make sure you don't say anything stupid at MEPS. 1 slip of the tongue could permanently disqualify you from all branches. When that happens, it becomes a big waste of time for everyone involved in the process. I have many stories of dumb people saying dumb stuff at MEPS. Most of which was unintentional but they got nervous and wouldn't shut up. And yes, your recruiter was either new or not very good. BTW, You're a very funny guy. I love Comedy, which brought me here in the 1st place. So I agree, everything worked out the way it was supposed to. If you ever do a show in Indianapolis, I'm gonna try and go. Take Care.

Enjoyed hearing your “almost Army” story, Dusty! I have an almost Army story, too. This was back in the early 1990’s. The local recruiters were pushing , “The Buddy System”, so my best friend and I decided to go for it. I won’t bore you and your fans with the story, but it was pretty bad and scary as 19 year old young women. Man, I’m glad it didn’t happen.

Great story Dusty. Man, they really threw the book at you. I think the lesson to be learned is how hard someone will screw a kids life up to look like a big shot, honestly. Like yeah maybe you decided you didn’t want to go to the army after all, but that cop took that choice away from you. So a lot of that drinking and self destructive path you got on happened over something silly. Makes me wonder what would’ve happened to a kid that didn’t have the money to borrow to avoid a 6 month sentence and what would’ve happened to their life then. The trauma of going to jail, and what that does to somebody, trying to rebuild a life with limited job prospects because of a criminal record. That one night can and does ruin some peoples lives for good. That cop could’ve taken you home and given you a warning but he was more interested in bullying then he was a kids future. Anyways, you make me a lot of people laugh and I’m glad you’re around. Maybe everything really does happen for a reason.

In reality joining the military hardly ever sets changes someone putting them on the right path. Some people are making good choices but born into a situation and military service gives them an out but people looking for opportunities to smoke or drink and drive still look for them in the military and then really jack up their life with an administrative separation. Your Army tests and recruiter sound very familiar, lol. I did a hitch in the Yankee army in the 80s. Learned to work in the operating room and it was a cool job and a great experience and how I met my wife. When you grow up in a trailer in Alabama there aren't many choices.

My grandson was born on 9/11. My daughter went into labor as we were supposed to be going to my father’s funeral a few years ago. That’s my 9/11 2.0, not to take away from the travesty of Patriots day. But true beauty came from truly horrible circumstances and I can only be thankful.

I had a similar experience being a 2000 graduate... I wanted to be an aircraft mechanic and join the AirForce reserves. I got a job with an airline in 2000 and a year later everything changed. I didn't go to the airforce, but stayed with the airline for 8 years.
My older brother went through a very similar thing around the same time. Joined the marines but couldn't stop partying, got arrested and didn't end up joining. Then 9/11... I think he was set to be one of the people who would have been tasked with disarming IEDs, though I don't think he knew that when he signed up.

I have to say though, I'm glad you didn't have to fight in the Middle East because that might have changed a lot of things for you, possibly not in a good way. God does work in mysterious ways. 26:22... I had a physical reaction to the phrase "just in time to see the second plane crash into the building". My stomach dropped and I nearly cried. It is amazing how 21 years later it is still traumatic just to remember and I don't even have a personal link...

Similar story with delayed entry. This is 1981 and I'm leaving for boot camp in a day or 2 or 3, don't remember. I get pulled over on my motorcycle with gf. I'm hammered, speeding and no baffles in exhaust. I accidentally give the officer my military ID instead of DL because I'm hammered. Something was said about leaving for boot camp. He hands me back my military ID and said " good luck with that," laughs and takes off! What a difference for you 20 years later.
I joined right after the Berlin wall came down. While in basic training, Desert Shield kicked off. We were having a good time.
