- Guilty Gear Strive is about to release and the characters are walking the red carpet for the premiere. This is my review of each character's outfit! Who has managed to deliver and who has fallen flat?

He is Guilty Gear equivalent of Disco Dan in our era. In Sol's case, he is Woodstock.

To clarify, Leo always had the fur coat, it seems that she's suffering from the illusory Jotaro effect where the clothes and the hair fuse together.

She’s definitely trippin. Leo looks way better in strive then he did in rev. The spandex leggings and ky boots he had in rev was funny looking.
Since you like Ram’s hat so much, here’s a fun bit of info: if Faust lands the give-you-a-huge-afro ball on her, she’ll say either “it’s...cute!” or “my hat! :(“.
I remember showing Faust's new design to one of my friends, and the first thing he said upon noting his new shoes was, "make sure you know how to anti-air because Faust is kinda fly."

In the story, Sol actually does ask Ky about his new outfit, who then replies that he is in fact technically on vacation.
I get how stereotypical the Millia costume is but I also just freaking love that redesign. I always thought Millia's old designs had a budget cosplay feel to them, largely because they were texturally flat. Like, in Xrd, Millia's entire outfit is the same glossy linen with the same flat yellow or black, and it makes her look kind of paint-by-numbers. The Strive design definitely leans into the Russian stereotype, but it also has linen, suede, and fur materials with a lot more variety in shades within the dominant brown (and the yellow accent of the scarf and hair). It feels like a believable but badass outfit. It also matches better with Millia's aloof personality - I really could not buy someone like her (an ex-assassin no less) wearing the garish yellow coat from Xrd.
these are good points and Millia's costume actually grows on me more and more to the point where I don't completely agree with my video anymore regarding her haha! I do agree it fits her personality well!
I actually still like Millia's X2 design. I know at first glance it won't make sense. A white shirt and- wait where the fuck are her pants. But the white shirt with the blue accents with her gloves made her look so modern to me.
I don't like how she's supposed to be wearing a thick coat but it somehow completely traces her body to the point that you can see her fricking belly button as though she's wearing vacuum-sealed spandex or something.
I think characters like Faust and Zato were purposely left simple so that their complex animations would be discernible in-game

I love I-no's new design. The longer skirt also makes her look more like a witch. It fits so well

I think she has a really powerful look. Like boom here's a hard rock witch.
The bigger hat, glasses, and downright insane smile all make her look like the witchiest witch in the whole west

I love how they made the art style of characters like may and ram softer and cuter with the round plump hats. In Ram's case it makes a lot of sense thematically since in the story she has gone from the villain to becoming friends with the gang because of Sin, and shes grown to be a much more emotionally sensitive person rather than a tool of mother.
One thing I also want to point out regarding Millia is that her entire aesthetic in Strive is less a Russian stereotype and more an homage to the character Maetel from Galaxy Express 999.
I like to think that the lack of dramatic change of Zato’s design connects to the fact that he already died and suffered an incomplete reincarnation, whereas now he doesn’t feel pleasure, desire or anything and doesn’t have much recollection of what he used to be besides remembering some of his feelings of love for Millia. (Not considering how iconic he is)
When you started talking about Sol I couldn’t help but chuckle, the best part of his re design for me was that he doesn’t wear belts on his arms anymore. Tho I guess he’s still a belt party lol, can’t help but fall in love with how crazy he looks tho.
I really disliked Ky design at the start and still getting used to it but I like to think using less clothes helps to emphasize he’s on his own path now and has more thoughts of his own, having a more free lifestyle now different of the his younger self that used very tight clothes. (I find it interesting as he is using less clothes and Sol is using more clothes this time around, coincidence?)

Yeah I really love the holy order uniform so I was a bit sad about Ky's redesign as well at first!

My favourite design so far is Nagoriyuki's. It's just so well done, it looks like Daisuke spent most of the time creating this character and way less with certain others.
My 2nd favourite is also Chip. xD
I can't wait to see how the other characters are going to look.

I miss Holy Order Sol so much it's unreal. I keep looking at the extra end cut scene in Rev 2 just to see the 3d model of him
Order Sol might be one of, if not the best, Guilty Gear design in the history of the series. It’s such a good one

3:34 that portion in his theme made me read into his lore. Someone correct me of I'm wrong, but basically he feels so guilty about that girl that he couldn't save back then, and his body and mind (more so his body) are regressing into that of a Gear.
That's what happened previously, when he became Baldhead.
Faust used to be a serial killer, using the name Dr.Baldhead, after he snapped and went insane from killing a girl.
During later games, he becomes sane again and realises his mistakes, donning the Paper Bag to hide his identity and wandering the world to help people. During a later game (I think it was Xrd? I dunno) he discovers Zato-1 was payed to cause the malpractice for the conclave. Insert his entire plot of Xrd, and he begins wandering the world.
During this time before the game, he seems to break down under the mental stress of fighting his two sides - he both loves harming and saving people, which leads to him almost going insane.
Tl;dr, Faust went insane, Became sane again, Went Insane again, Became almost-sane-but-still-probably-would-murder-you
In general, they went for a lore grounded look for most characters that got more drastic redesigns. I think Ky looks sharp; I kind of thought the Holy Order uniform was just generic paladin man in a series with such wacky character designs.
but his current outfit is even more generic, now he looks like generic paladin man crossed with man in a formal suit
@@slkjvlkfsvnlsdfhgdght5447 I mean, it communicates a lot more about his character since Ky has loosened up as a person drastically. He’s no longer a cold blooded war machine; more of a family man, and his more relaxed look attests to that.

“Plaid” is such a bastard of a word that my 11th grade English teacher once stopped in the middle of a lesson to go on a 6 minute rant about how much she hated it

@@starbreaker6441 being Hispanic really makes it easy dude. We have the exact same vowel sounds as Japanese does. English speakers are kinda dealt the worst hand possible as far as speaking other languages goes.
I'd bet decent money she didn't pronounce "Nagoriyuki" correctly. But the flow of Japanese is intuitive generally.

So as a fellow Faust main I feel like Faust new design is very much a call back to his original persona Dr. Bald head. In his origin he went insane after an unfortunate operation on a young girl failed. He went on a murderous rampage until he learned that he did not kill the patient. It was Eddie who was in control of Zato=1 And leading the Assassin's Guild. And thus became Faust in GGX. So as to why he has reverted back to his Bald Head outfit While keeping the Faust Bag. I'm both excited and scared to see where this character goes.

I was learning axyl in Xrd in preparation for strive and once I realized he was wearing booty shorts I didn’t want to anymore because I couldn’t stop staring at the leg. Thank you Daisuke for fixing this

Really awesome video idea, everyone is doing tier lists on how the characters play or even the music but I haven’t seen anyone talk about the designs, props to you
Chipp is easily my favorite but I love Ram with her more floppy hat, but also Nagoryu. I love how Nago's katana scabbard has a latch on it so when he sheaths his sword it clicks and locks into place. It's so satisfying to watch

He is canonically a boomer. He's something like 200 years old as of strive.

That's actually a good idea, especially since character designs are very much focused on in fighting games, especially ones like this, King of Fighters, Tekken, Street Fighter, and a few others. More should do these kinds of reviews. This was fun to watch through. Thank you for doing this.

I think Giovanna's color pallette is utilized very well. The hint of turquoise on her shoes the inside of sleeve help a lot. I also love the aesthetic inspired by like 60s detectives without feeling too campy. Gotta love those suspenders ya know?

Really fun video! I agree for the most part. Personally I love Faust's new design the most. You're right that his clothes are pretty bland, but for the newer horror aesthetic they gave him I think it works perfectly. Kinda reminds me of Michael Myers' jumpsuit - it's unsettling normal compared to how creepy he is.

Gio's outfit is nuts. It's this mash of different aesthetics and it's quite dope.
Personally I think Faust's simple design is a nice contrast of how wacky cartoonish his kit is. I think it also helps his horror vibe too. He kinda makes me think of Soul Eater character.
Also your denim jacket makes me wanna go buy a new denim jacket. Been a while since I had one and I forgot how much I like denim jackets.

Leo keeps the lion mane motif by , instead of having too much hair , he uses the vest's hair/fur
I know absolutely zero about Guilty Gear but sat down for this entire breakdown.
Nagoriyuki is a samurai vampire baseball player when blood gauge is filled and Yeetus deletus ppl cross screen.

Also, I used to hate how complex and weird everyone looked in GG, and now I'm loving the "simpler" redesigns. Also I'm going to main Axl, so I'm probably very boring
nah, he's a cool character so that's a good choice!
Finally, someone else who loves May's redesign. She reminds me a lot of a The World Ends With You character. Definitely tied with I-No as my favourite redesigns.
It’s fascinating having someone come at these characters from a fashion perspective (what would people think if you dressed like this irl) rather than a character design perspective (what does this design tell me about the character)
Thank you so much for this video, I love seeing different kinds of content coming from the FGC! Fighting games have so much more creative space to explore than tier lists and grinding ranked (which is cool, if you like it), and I really do hope you continue this project or something in the same spirit.

Right.. decent question because noticed a pattern, if Nagoryuki was skinny and not very muscularly open chested, and Chipp Was skinny and not with a slevless shirt, but they had the exact same desighns, would you still rank them the same ? Because fashion is not about just being buff and showing muscle makes you instantly look good. Fashion is about how well the desighn feels like it fits the personality of the character, while also being eye catching and looking good. Sol and Leo both aren't showing bare muscle chest, and even I no & Giovanna both are.. me thinks I see a pattern in what you think is better "fashion" but hey, could be wrong just point out a series of odd coincidences. Btw, Leo is a German king who resembles an an actual lion, kings often have long furred robes, and there is absaloutley no way Sol looks better in his order outfit, he literally looks like a priest, with the black changed to red, your entitled to your opinion but that is one of the least guilty gear aesthetic looks, it's very strange how you say you hate glam rock, the main style of guilty gear, yet you also say when it is beneficial to you that characters didn't look fun enough .. ya know, having more glam rock classic guilty gear desighn, I'm no expert but when you reveiw something, it's generally a good idea to not contridict yourself. I took the time to watch the whole thing and genuinley respond, if you don't care that's fine, but I do.
for leo, he has always had the shorter hair, his jacket fur was just the same color as his hair so people thought he had long hair. I really like his redesign.

The sheath. The thing that holds Ky's sword is a sheath
The only thing I'd really criticize about the chipp redesign is that they made him so buff. Like they made him just as buff or even buffer than nago or sol even though he is supposed to be the quick, high speed ninja character.
You know you need muscles to move quickly, right?
@@MayHugger Of course you need muscle to move quickly but they went too far on it with Chipp in my opinion. Chipp was never the type of character to deal heavy dmg or to be able to take alot of it, so I feel like a slimer body would fit his gameplay alot more but as I said, that's just my opinion.
@@MayHugger Chipp's XX design is still ripped but the physique still conveys his speed which is his defining trait. I like a lot about his Strive clothes but he just doesn't look like a fast stealthy ninja at all
But... but Sol looks so cool though! He's so unashamedly 90's anime. He'd fit right in with like, Gene Starwind or Vash the Stampede
But yeah I'm not really feeling that Axl look. I'm kind of surprised he doesn't have much red in his outfit -- I always figured red was Axl's signature color

My problem with Sol is: Belts.
I like Simple designs so of course May and Nagoriyuki are my favorite. (Nagoriyuki isn't that simple, but it conveys a lot about him perfectly)

I agree with you that Axl's outfit is a bit miss matched, but its 1000% better than the jorts.

That's actually exactly why Ky looks that way.
His bosses punished him with a forced vacation when he told them that he intended to make his relationship with Dizzy public knowledge.
Axel is using plad because of his 1980’s Guns and Roses look.
Just check out Axel Rose (he wears a bandana and is blonde with long hair. Dont look for how he looks nowadays tho).
The "vampire thing" with Nagoriyuki's design, I noticed, was that his mask had fangs on it.
Small note: Leo didn't get a haircut for Strive, his hair looked like that in Xrd as well.
The mane was part of his coat even back in Xrd but it was hard to tell apart from his hair which I assume was intentional.

I don't like they removed HOPE from Ky, he has a big ass quote on his glove and sword but the simple "HOPE" is a lot more poignant imo.
This is a bold video to make, considering that the demographic of fighting game players and the demographic of people who care about how they look seems to have very little crossover
They call them "uggs" because thats the sound you make when you see them
If we add particles and animations in to the mix Ramlethal is my favorite. Her animations just give her so much more personality imo. Anji’s particles are also top tier with all the butterfly motif.
I think Leo's lack of detailing waist down was a deliberate design choice. His moveset is pretty much entirely revolves around those gorilla sword and arms, and as such is what your eyes should be paying attention to, not those non-kicking legs. I think they were going for an aviator style jacket, I personally like it but the fur could've been done better to not blend with his hair that much

I could be wrong but I think ram's hat from Xrd was not supposed to be bunny ears, but a regal design (like the pope's hat) and 'V' shaped, for Valentine. Same with Elphelt, another Valentine.

I think it’s unfair for Axl because he’s literally from 20th century Britain and he just randomly got warped here
I think Leo and Axl suffered a little in the redesign because the whole ethos of it seems to be a more streamlined visual: Leo had all that lion king vibe going on (not to be confused with a Lion King vibe, mind), but he has to appear a little more grounded, anime trappings nonetheless.
Gotta say: Nagoyuki looks dope as heck; I-no looks better than Giovanna, because Gio is rocking a great look, but I-no is a Rock Witch, which makes way cooler than anyone else. Also, Ramlethal is great and I'd make my list top 4 just to include her :)
Zato did change tho. He became buff as hell, like everyone in Strive lol
Ky Kiske will always be my favourite no matter what, I do miss his old haircut but I like his current outfit.
Edit: I love Sol design, he has the perfect GG classic design that will probably never change.

I agree on the top 3 sans Chipp. The rope looks silly.
Some of Sol's alt colors really improve the outfit.
