  • Hello all, we have some exciting news! Pekka needs your help to create new ideas for future testing. If you have some great ideas for us please leave a comment to this video (to get Jamie excited as well). Pekka will draw three lucky winners from the comment section and they will receive a pressed hollow section piece of modern art and Jamie's autograph. Watch the video and be creative!
And for all of our new viewers: Stalatube X Pekka feat. Jamie Hyneman is video series where Stalatube's engineer Pekka tests stainless steel hollow sections with a world-known Professor Mr. Jamie Hyneman. The series comprises three parts in which Pekka and Jamie subject various steel grades to practical studies: pressure testing, roll-over testing, and tensile testing.

Well, requirement number one - both Pekka and Jamie must be involved. Otherwise the tests are invalid. They are the masters of testing Stalatube, and we trust only them :-)

Do explosive tests with Pommijakkatat guys! Put 100g explosive in hollow tubes welded shut and compare the deformation after they are exploded.
Please bring me back to Finland for this test, I have to see it in person!

Also do a heavy corrosion test. Dip samples into a hot fuming nitric acid bath and see how the duplex SS does vs. others. Raise the stakes- put the acid in the samples so they must contain it. Then put the Stala samples over Pekka's boss' car, but the others over teddy bears or something, the acid will eat through the others (eventually)

@@stalatube_official I researched corrosion of duplex SS when I worked at a metallurgy lab during university. It is very cool to see it used in structural applications!

testing how bolt holes effect the strength would be interesting, showing an attached eyelet vs through hole mid way across a span?

Yes... Build a bridge for a car, or bus, or train to drive over it.
I am looking forward to season 2 of HSSHSWP.

Make identical towers of the tubing at different heights and see the strength and stability of the vertical un-reinforced pipes. Keep adding weight until collapse. 2nd variation on this is repeat test and apply propane torches in a uniform way to all and repeat tests under heat strain. 3rd variation on this is to chill the structures significantly and show strength in extreme cold conditions. 4th would be to apply all weight on 1 side of the structure only to show strain and compression strength. All tests could be done with same construction for consistancy.

A torsional test where you replace the driveshaft of a vehicle with various grades of steel and see which tubes can survive the torsion would be cool. This may require having a heavy trailer attached to the vehicle to increase the torsional load through the driveshaft. Also, welding up a cantilevered beam structure in bending to failure would be exciting to watch. To safely create the bending force you could have a large tub of water on the cantilevered section and fill it until the beam breaks and spills all the water.

If it is more resistant to heat than regular stainless steel sections, you could put a load on it and heat it up to see when it fails

Welding Test: Weld multiple tubes together end-to-end, securing them at only one point, how long you can make the row before it becomes unstable!
Balance Test: Test the uniformity of various tubes by balancing them, cut the balancing point then gauge if both sides are identical in all ways.
Thermal Stress Test: Repeatedly apply hot and cold temperatures to the tubes while under stress to test them over time.

There's a few things that come to mind:
Concussive tests with interesting explosives because Jamie likes big boom
Impact tests from very tall heights at the Kone free fall lab
Erosion tests with sand blasters and waterjets
Corrosion tests with various concentrations of nitric acid and other steel-destroying liquids
Thermal testing where the tube is put in liquid nitrogen and then subjected to crush/impact/tensile tests

here is a random dumb idea, how about similar test at certain temperatures or bringing the beams close to a "common" high load near a failure point (the weakest of the batch?) and heating them up or cooling them down to see when they lose their strength? (maybe also tolerances, throw in some invar as the control and see how other steels manages compared to yours...)

Passive safety in buses: To perform a comparative frontal crash test under Regulation UN R29 applied to a bus front structure. Safety of the bus driver in the event of frontal impact is becoming an important topic of discussions in bus market . Manufacturers are starting to pay attention and to offer the client this added value in safety . I think it's worthy to see how STALATUBE steel properties could contribute in safety.

Can you use a length of Stalatube in a tug-of-war between two tanks? Use extra strong chains.
If not tanks, maybe winch a car up the side of a cliff or something.
Can a Stalatube fence stop a speeding car or truck?
Can you forge a knife from Stalatube?

I'd like to see how they deal with fire. Like, say I've got a warehouse that's got drums of petroleum products in it. The roof is covered in snow and a fire breaks out. Fire suppression fails. How much longer does your product give my guys to get out and the firefighters to do their thing before the roof collapses compared to your competitors?
