I was working for a well know rail subcontractor when the government gave the green light for this project to commence. Originally given a £50B price tag and 10 year program. All senior project members were rubbing their hands and making it common knowledge that both the cost and duration would be doubled. Common knowledge pre-construction.
That's because people who work for Contractors and Sub Contractors are the only ones who understand the technicalities of designing and constructing a construction project. Designing and delivering major building projects have the same problems. Designers lack commercial acumen and Cost Consultants don't possess enough technical knowledge to be able to assess an accurate cost budget.
Despite being a great railway fan, this particular project is 50 years too late. Saving a few minutes on existing journey time is ridiculous! As a retired businessman, I would always prefer to travel at the speed of light on the internet. Meetings would be a hell of a lot cheaper and loads of time would be saved. Improve the movement of goods and freight is the important priority, and the assertion that HS2 would help this is very dubious in my opinion. Let's not forget that interchange can be the major delay for passengers. Train to bus and bus to train can make a more direct but slower service more attractive.
Maggie refused to put taxpayers money into the Chunnel. I f there is a commercial case for a project Private equity will flood in, as in the case of the Chunnel. The motorway's built 70 years ago are falling apart. 66 Billion on motorway maintenance would benefit everyone in the country.
Tell me it wasn't worth it in 50 yrs time. Some of our present routes are 180yrs old and still providing a service. Talking about vison HS2 woldn't be needed if the Labour Minister of Transport Barbara Castle hadn't shut dowen the Great Central route
66 billion would have fixed a lot of broken stuff in Britain, like one of those aircraft carriers, stupid idea to have 2!, this is so embarrassing! Fix the food banks, the homeless, the aged etc etc etc What is wrong with this country for gods sake, Ive watched it crumble sine 1977! ...when it was better back then with blackouts!
But it's not only a track that's laid. There's all the tunnels, bridges, viaducts, cuttings, services diversions, highway alterations, planning requirements, design fees, and compulsory purchase orders.
The money spent on this ludicrous vanity project could have been spent turning many hobbled twin lines shared by 'fast' and slow trains throughout the country with the incumbent infrastructure into fast and slow pairs with widened tunnels/bridges etc or perish the thought creating a single two way station by-pass platform to enable suburban stopping services to be passed by faster inter-city express services.
Ironically the British government awarded Fujitsu billions in HS2 contracts, seems they are very much in bed with each other.
Another example of broken Britain - the £66bn could and should have been spent on the armed forces
How many tory doners run these construction companies and how many Politicians are shareholders
If the Contractors are ripping off the taxpayer by tens of billions what do you think the real true cost is?

666... Go figure!
Maybe ITV should make a drama about the HS2 scandal next
For how much longer are we going to tolerate gross incompetence from our government ?
666 it would be

I remember when they announced HS2 was announced. I said it would never reach Manchester. I was right. 😂😂😂😂

There are a lot of people getting very, very rich on the back of HS2🤔.......
So what do you believe the true cost is ?

Cheaper than Net Zero and a lot more useful
I work on HS2 .. pays well 😏
Assuming London to Birmingham is 125 miles, then that's over £100000 per foot of track laid 😳
