Why You Should Disable iCloud Photo Library (& What to Use Instead)

  • One of the new features in iOS called iCloud Photo Library is definitely not helping. This feature, while in theory, allows you to backup all of your photos and videos on any of your iOS or MacOS devices to the cloud, takes up precious iCloud storage and adds up really quickly. Most people I know have run out of storage just from iCloud backups (another issue I have with iOS, but I digress) so adding this is almost a sure-fire way to guarantee you run out of iCloud storage.
There is a better way though. I touched on this in a video a long time ago about backing up your photos and videos but think we need to revisit the concept. You should turn off iCloud Photo Library and instead use another free service like, say, Google Photos which automatically backs up all of your photos and videos in an unlimited quantity for free.
So here's how we do that.

Exactly the guy misses the whole point. First of all it’s not free. Google backs you into a corner and then you have to pay for it later. They will eventually charge for it if nothing else in advertently through tying into Google drive storage. Also he doesn’t mention the value in the apple ecosystem. iCloud photo library etc. can improve but between theThe two options I think it’s better

Personally, I think it’s worth paying a small amount of money for your privacy than giving it up to save a buck or two per month. Our personal information is going to be a commodity in the future if not now. We just saw how much data Facebook has on everyone.
Honestly, back up the phone every 3 months and delete photos of your dinner and the 4-15 selfies you shot before getting the right one and you’ll almost never run out of space.

"back up the phone every 3 months and delete photos" > This is exactly what I do. Apple positioned themselves perfectly to make an aircraft carrier of cash.

Great video, maybe you forgot to mention that google photos should be open so you can upload it “automatically” and that it’s too slow. I have the same issue with TH-cam red, Spotify. I switched to iCloud storage and Apple Music for convenience because only these services will sync in the background.

I’m so happy that you made this video, I’ve been having this problem that I cannot watch my videos when I don’t have internet access. And when I do, I usually have to wait for the video to be downloaded from iCloud. And ever since I noticed that thing happening, I wanted to stop it so badly. I couldn’t even import my videos I recorded into my video editors on my phone without WiFi, and I usually edit them outside. After watching this video, and turn that annoying crap off and can finally live a happy life.

Correction: There is a common misconception in this Video. All photos are compressed when uploading in high quality mode in Google photos, but photos of larger than 16 MP are both compressed and resized to 16 MP. This is why the Google Pixel 2 has 2 years of unlimited original quality uploads, despite the camera being less than or equal 16 MP.
If you want to test it out, try uploading using the high res option and compare the MD5 or the file sizes.
TL,DR: All photos uploaded via "high quality" to Google Photos are compressed, but photos larger than 16 MP are both compressed and resized to 16 MP. Use original quality to avoid compression and resizing.

Scott Griffin Totally True statement- however on the other hand, since my good friends over at Apple are such liberal thinkers (to say the least) -
They should be appalled 😯 that any company would charge their customers in a way for particular service when these said companies should offer it for free!!!!
Especially since they care so much about the 🌎 environment as well as Human Rights being protected however they choose to manufacture their products utilizing the cheapest - environmentally destructive ,
child loaded, cheapest labor forces in the world.... totally boggles my mind how Apple preaches their morals on so many of these topics and continue them yet their die hard clientele still worship them....

I have to agree I have so many photos I nearly took up all of my storage in my iPhone cuz if my pics and music i moved from my android. So I switch everything over to Google photos I recovered a lot of storage after deleting a lot of photos off the iPhone itself and I'm about to stop paying a monthly rate to Apple for storage because I have unlimited storage with my Google photos app. By the way I'm not new to Google photos I've always had Android phones, and I've never lost photos in Google photos or docs or music in Google Drive whenever I switch devices and I still have my information after switching over to Apple. I am a first time iPhone user so I was stoked to learn that I could download Google photos and Google Drive and bring my pictures, music and docs from my old Android to my iPhone and not have to worry about wasting any storage and pay money to Apple:)

If we have learned anything in recent years regarding Google it is that anything they give for free comes at a cost. And most of us can't possibly even fathom the real cost. You give them your personal information, likes/dislikes, photos, location, shopping habits... all of which they sell and share with God knows who. And in exchange, you receive a "free" service. I would never use them to store my personal photo library. With face recognition being as advanced as it is, you are essentially compromising the privacy of any friend or family member that is also in your photos. I don't mean to sound like a conspiracy nut. All of these uses and abuses by Google are well documented.

Kim Luc Schlesser I think that Apple has stated that they can’t access those pictures though. They’re encrypted server side as well. Google on the other hand accesses their pictures to build their algorithm for processing pictures when taking pics from their Pixel phones. They’re phones rely heavily on their software processing. If anyone knows differently please chime in.

Yup this is where apple is different from google. Apple is concern to not selling your data to anyone. It's main business is selling hardware + software. Google, on the other hand, rely its business on advertising. Company pays Google for their great user data collection. Google know what to recommend to you almost perfectly because it has your data.
That's why I choose apple over google.

First off, this isn't even remotely new, iCloud library has existed for over 2 years so I'm already questioning your knowledge of apple products. Secondly, if you're integrated into the Apple ecosystem and have more than just an iPhone the $1 / mth makes much more sense, especially with apple's new compression file format for photos and videos. It's much easier to be able to use third party apps to edit the photos and have the edits be instantly available on other devices rather than having the Google app convert the photos to JPEG then have you download them individually onto your phone / computer to edit them then reupload them to the app.
It kills the fluidity of the ecosystem, takes a step back and also gives Google access to all your photos and you could accidentally make your entire library public at the flip of a switch. To that you may say well hey didn't a bunch of people get their icloud photos hacked, yes they did but what they failed to make clear in the news of that was that it was done through phishing emails, fake emails sent to people asking for their password which they put in because they're dumb. Anyways you get my drift, if you have an iPhone you can afford the $1 a month to fuel the system and your life will be made much easier with your photos easily available to you all the time and all the time uploading rather than you having to download a photo to use it and then remember to check if the app is backing up your photos.

I know nothing about this stuff, but my photos take up so much storage on my phone. I do like the ability to not have to go to my computer to find old photos. What is the difference? Do you have a recommendation. So confused? I want more storage on my phone but don't want to delete them all is there a middle ground?

I think the best way to really store your photos is to use external SSD and have 2 SSD's in case one fails. I do that every time mi phone gets full, and I always erase bad taken photos on the spot so I don't clutter my SSD. Of course I have google as back up in case my phone dies.

Hi David I have a question. Once I have backup all photos on google photos if I go to my photos library on my iPhone X and delete them I am not able to see them anymore on my google photos either. There is a way of keeping them on google photos so I can delete them from my library on my phone to free up some space but without loosing them forever? Am I missing something? Is there any bottom that I should click to keep these photos secured on the google photos?

iCloud storage for backups and photos is a blessing, not a "problem". You don't know how many times people have come to me over the years, after losing their precious photos, or wrecking their phones and losing all their contacts. And no, they never have a backup, or at least a current one. Oh yes, they backed up their photos THREE YEARS ago, one time, but nothing current or automatic. That's the genius of iCloud backups - they're automatic! So no, I'm not going to use a kludge with Google Photos, I'm using iCloud. In fact, I'm on the family plan, so all my devices, my wifes, my Mom's and my sisters ARE BACKED UP! Whew! Problem solved ;-) All that for just $3 a month for 200GB of storage for the family. A huge bargain!

    • @Miracollix

    • @canaksut311
      @canaksut311 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Them losing their precious data is because of THEIR fault of not backing up. When i have a working external drive and back up my files on that and really just dont need the icloud then it becomes a "problem" and you have to disable it so the notes app on your mac stops giving me buy icloud pop ups and really do what it suposed to do. Taking real notes!

Ftoun Almutairi i have the answer
If you re running low on iphone storage, they will make the photos that has already been on the icloud photo storage “suckier” so you can redownload it on your phone later
Now if you were to dissable it, all the photos you have in your icloud AND the “suckified” version on your phone
I’ve made the mistake of neglecting this feature and have 70% of my photo “suckified” so if i were to dissable it, i will lose like 10-15 GB worth of photos and videos so i hope you dont make the mistake i did

It’s not that big of a deal because it’s cheap for more storage. Also I love iCloud Photo Library because I can access them anywhere and on every device and it helps since it is part of the ecosystem. Way easier since it is built in so it’s easy to access. I don’t have to use a 3rd
Party system like google photos where it’s harder to use and I have to download an app

The problem with the Google photos app is that the app won’t back up any photos or videos unless the app is open and running. The moment you minimize or close the app, the backup stops. Very annoying. Dropbox can sync in the background. Why doesn’t Google have this fixed?

The problem with Google Photos is that it's not actually free: you are paying for it with your private data. They use it for marketing, research, face recognition, "3rd party services," and essentially are making a huge profit off of your data which you agree to in their terms of service. Additionally, Apple's default photo format is PNG which has higher quality in colors than JPEG (a lossy format, meaning you lose quality for editing). This is why a 4mb photo in PNG turns into a 1.5mb JPEG in Google's "high quality" format, perhaps even less once they compress it.
Apple is HEAVILY committed to protecting privacy. So much so that the FBI complains about it. One might ask, "why should I be concerned about privacy?" Watch the documentary about Snowden and the NSA. If you still don't care, more power to ya.

What you call a downside, for many, including me, is a great feature. I get that it will eat up storage. But just as you chose to have an unlimited data cellular plan (me too, gotta have it), I choose to have enough storage to allow for my photo library to be automatically and seamlessly managed. I make a change on my iPhone, then it shows up with those changes on my iPad and MacBook Pro. No uploading/downloading/nuking duplicates, etc. So again, just as you could save $10/20/30 bucks a month with a more limited cell data plan, anyone could save $10 a month and explore third party options for cheaper storage. But just as you see value in unlimited data, I see value in paying $9.99/mo. for 1TB of storage and seamless management of what has become the most important feature in a smartphone: the camera and resulting photos. My two cents.
