John Peel Show Dec 30 1980

  • John Peel was one of the most important figures bringing numerous unheard of, sometimes obscure, bands to "the masses". Also he was a really nice guy, never seemed to have a bad day, always had positive things to say about the session!
    This is most of the show, cuts off a few of the "festive fifty" towards the end.
    Features sessions by.... well John will tell you right at the beginning!
    Any revenue will go to the respective owners of rights - that's the way youtube works - may not be available in Canada and other territories. I have no idea why!
    I have more Peel shows to upload depending on how "liked" this is - it's pretty time consuming - let me know

    Growing up in a Jamaican family, born in the UK I absolutely loved listening to John Peel at night while in bed with my transistor radio hidden under my blankets so my parents could not hear. I was not always successful; they would come in and tell me to "Turn that radio off". Thank you, John Peel, for all the memories and the introduction to Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Thank you to the uploader. I really miss living in the UK in the 70's. It was not so bad.

    Wish I could come home one weary night , switch on the radio and hear that voice just once more.

    The dilemma of home taping a two-hour show - a C90 cassette would usually give you better quality sound than a C120 one but you'd lose the last half hour; a C120 tape was much more likely to be fragile and temperamental; two C60 cassettes per show would soon get expensive. And that's without the wildly differing quality of tapes available from various manufacturers. Trial and error eventaully convinced me that TDK tapes were the only ones worth buying; they would probably still play today. As for the rest - crumbling to dust by now, or losing/lost their magnetic coating. Nothing lasts for ever ...

    One thing I notice is how little work Peel does during the show. The occasional comment, but mostly just this band, this song and then he plays ALL the song without talking over it. A lot of modern DJs could do with learning from him…

    • @chriscanty2804
      @chriscanty2804 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Exactly! One of the reasons I liked Peel apart from the music, was just that, most DJ's back then all liked the sound of their own voice, & seemed to want to be stars! BBCradio6 purports to the the sons & daughters of Peel, but most presenters are the modern equivalent of Dave Lee Travis, ie like the sound of their own voice and seem fake, RIP John & thanks for the music & thanks for uploading this

    I would like to ask where do these recordings come from? At the time they would have been broadcast on AM radio but the sound here is better than FM-quality so it can't be a recording a listener made in 1980. Do the BBC really have high quality recordings of everything ever broadcast and if so how did you get access to these tapes?

    • @bassaxist

      @@caphep radio 1 broadcast some of their shows on vhf/fm right from their birth in 1967. However they shared the fm/vhf band with radio 2, so the peel show was broadcast on radio 2’s wave band as well as radio 1’s mw station. What you’re referring to in 1988 is when radio 1 got its own fm frequency, and listeners no longer had to tune to radio 2 to hear the peel show.

      John's affliction wasn't pedophilia, which has a specific definition and relates to prepubescent children. I understand that people repulsed by his honesty want to claim otherwise and use the word "kids" in relation to him, but that doesn't make it accurate or change any of the history. In this very show he laments Clare Grogan not showing up for a lunch and I remember his discomfiting obsession with her. Grogan was 18 and Peel was 41. He wasn't totally lacking self-awareness about it and joked at his own expense (but seemingly couldn't help himself either). Not saying any of this in approval of his behavior or excusing it - it just wasn't pedophilia.
