Hannah Wicks tbh chosen one plotlines could work with some twists- like not telling the one until it gets inconvenient, but few writers are going to go through the effort of refreshing a trope. love triangles are trash.
I mean, she did kinda subvert the Chosen One trope. The prophecy did exist, but it was Voldemort's interpretation of it that lead to Harry being the chosen one. It could have been Neville, or any boy born at the end of July, but because Voldemort chose to go after the Potters, thus he made the prophecy happen.
@@alliebenson4653 Don't forget that the prophecy heavily depended on the Chosen One's mother sacrificing herself for her child, providing them with the protection to survive against Voldemort and ultimately help ensure he could never kill the Chosen One. It only worked in Harry's case because Snape requested Voldemort spare Lily out of love for her. If Voldemort went after Alice Longbottom, he would have just killed her on the spot, not even giving her a chance to sacrifice herself.
If you like BookTube, and Avatar, you might want to check out A Clockwork Reader. She's one of my favourite BookTubers, and she loves Avatar. I'm not sure if you've seen her videos,
when I read it I liked it a lot because it was so creative and like she could choose both in the end but looking back it was kinda problematic that she loved both of them and it's kinda weird
I actually really like it when an overused/overrated trope is done well, it shows off the creativity of the author. It makes me let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding when I'm reading it.
i so agree with the book covers thing! i’m finishing the third book in the rebel of the sands trilogy and the main character isn’t white - her race isn’t specified as it’s a made up world but she isn’t white, and the skin you can see on the cover versions with a model on it is clearly pale. like she’s mentioned as having darker skin, she lives in the goddamn desert, pretty sure she doesn’t even know the words “blonde” or “ginger” because she described blonde characters as having golden hair and the one ginger character as having a hair color she’s only ever seen on a fox. so like, girl ain’t white. so why does she look so white on the cover?
Honestly I think there just a huge stock library with weirdly dressed or half naked models, cropped so you can't fully see the face (or photoshopped so dark you can't make out many details) that's used solely for book covers without much thought
When I get books for Christmas, I have to specify that I want the non-movie cover (or no real people on the cover), I thought I was the only one! It's just not cute. I usually get books that I've already read, and I'd rather them have the same cover as the first copy I read
DISCLAIMER: THIS IS MY OPINION :D I also do not like "stockphoto" book covers, but sometimes you do not have an option. For instance, a publisher decided to publish my book (in my small country), I sent him ideas and asked, if I could have an illustration...He sent me stockphoto link "pick a photo", adding that "we tried to have an illustrated cover but it DID NOT SELL WELL!" yep. I know the whole world is doing it, but my country's readers probably really want to have a naked man on cover on their shelf! So I spent like four hours on that site, trying to find something not too commercial or with a naked man's body or something unique/original. I sent them around 5 photos and they insisted on those which they picked out! :D so.... yes...and when a woman is on a mother's leave trying to self-publish a book, and don't have extra money or graphic skills, you'd probably choose a stockphoto too...
bossaddict08 so she took the time to tell her story and her opinion, and you come here to troll? time to get a life instead of telling others they are lying about theirs
I asked an artist I like how much for a cover and it was a figure with 3 zeros behind it. A stock photo cover had a single zero behind it... and possibly sold better anyway.
@@taramaya4659 you asked an artist how much they charge and they replied. If they weren't going to get commission on a profit basis, it makes sense that they would charge more- what if the book sold really well? They would deserve far more money. They have bills to pay, and their work is valuable.
I strongly hated how they did relationships in legend of korra... there was no build up for anything... It was like the writers were smashing their barbies together and saying "Look how cute they are"
I completely agree especially the final relationship for Korra (you know who I mean) wasn't handled the best. They shouted "bisexual Avatar!" while walking out the door.
In the beginning of the first season I could almost see Bolin and Korra happening. It was starting a slow burn I actually liked but then the writers were like, "But Mako is the older hotter brother, she has to like him!" And it all went to hell after that.
Anyone who thinks Korra and Asami's relationship was properly developed is a liar. The fact that the writers had to clarify the pairing after the show ended shows just how vague and undeveloped it was.
dang, I was not expecting a mention of Basara in this video! sending me right back to my middle school shoujo phase! I haven't thought about that series in ages. I'd love to hear you talk about manga more often :o I think Harry Potter is actually a really good example of the chosen one trope done well (without major subversion), because it's made clear that Harry being the only one who can defeat Voldemort is because of special circumstances (Voldemort magically tied them together by going after him, not bc Harry is super special in other ways), and also it actually goes into how Harry feels about being "the chosen one" and how it's a lot of pressure on him. For me thats the big thing I need with tropes, is just whether the characters' responses to the situation feel realistic.
readwithcindy I know you probably get this a lot but I can’t believe you’ve never read Harry Potter! Totally ok though I understand not everyone has to read it. If you ever find yourself wanting to though I recommend the audiobooks read by Stephen fry, he does the voices pretty great

My best friend lent me one of his John Green books and was kinda disappointed when I said, the main character sounds just way too whiny and selfpitying to me (and that was before someone died in the book). But then again, I felt the same about the catcher in the rye and that is supposed to be a "classic". Maybe I just don't vibe with the teenage boy perspective?
@@tf7602 yea same I read catcher in the eye my junior year and I had ppl tell me it's such a classic and it deals with mental illness I think but I just didnt get it, he came off as just alittle whiney and angsty and edgy and the plot just bore me 💀 maybe I just dont get it but it is what it is
Yessss I agree. I read TFioS when I was like 14 and absolutely loved it, and then I picked up and Abundunce of Katherine's a few years later and couldn't get into it, and I thought maybe it was just that book, but I also tried Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns and realised that his characters are literally all the exact same - overly articulate and chasing after a manic pixie dream girl. i got real bored real fast after the first few chapters of those other books.
The only John Green book I ever read was Paper Towns and I'm still impressed with myself for having finished that miserable book 6 years later lol. Never even went to see the movie but him making high school characters so "mysterious" and "deep" was such a turn off for me and then the whole plot of the book was totally trashed at the end???? im still mad???
readwithcindy it’s like a bipartisan system but for romance. You can go with boy-next-door childhood friend with the personality of gravel who wants you to be nothing, or you can go with the bad boy anti-hero type who will kill a child or something equally horrific to take the choice away from you! Oh and I guess you could vote third party, aka the random second-book love interest who’s actually kind of interesting and has chemistry with you but the sexual tension will remain not talked about at all.
Blackbyrd okay but alina does NOT deserve nikolai. mal also should’ve stayed dead lmao, i feel like it would’ve been more impactful even though i hated him
I REMEMBER READING BASARA AS A KID AND I'VE BEEN TRYING TO REMEMBER THE TITLE AND I WASN'T ABLE TO UNTIL THIS VIDEO. THANK YOU SO MUCH, YOU'VE SAVED MY LIFE
"I think any trope can be done well, it's just a matter of how you approach it." - Cindy Love this way of thinking because I know I've tended to blame the trope(s) since too often I see them executed poorly (eg love triangle, bad boy is a softy all along, etc). It's not the tropes fault.
The thing about Renée Ahdieh is that her writing is way too detailed. She spends most of her writing just describing a scene and not actually furthering the plot or the world. I tried reading A Flame in the Mist twice and just got frustrated because all she was doing was describing things and not doing anything that actually had anything to do with the characters or the story. I get that detail is good but there’s a such a thing as too much and Renée seems to think that the more detailed she makes her story, the better it is. She can make the scene pretty but she can’t make the story good.
So many writers I've read had this issue. The scenes in Erin Morgenstern's Night Circus were beautifully detailed but they were unnecessarily overwrought and it ended up slowing the story down. Same with Angela Carter's 'The Bloody Chamber', because the language and sentence structure she used sometimes made her narratives difficult to follow.
I did love her writing but my god was it terrible with fight scenes. There was one in particular that I had to re read thrice before I gave up and moved on.
It was very frustrating reading The Wrath and The Dawn when entire subplots would be dropped but she could still take the time to tell us what color her pillow was.
The daughter of smoke and bone trilogy was like that for me. Idk about laini taylors other books but I don't need to know about how the mc felt about something as a child during a 'heated' brawl
I actually really loved acotar, the whole series was a fun read in my opinion. But that was mostly because I wanted to read something trashy, and acotar was was exactly that. Not to mention that novella xD
Reminder that if you have been easily swayed by an abuser before, it doesn't mean that you're not strong or smart or brave. It happens when we have unhealed trauma usually relating to childhood parental relationships. And also abusers can be very, very manipulative. You're great and you will get through this xx
Amy D. The thing that really makes it work imo is that Harry doesn’t like the attention nor does he even really care about what his fame gets him. Throughout the series it’s pretty consistently portrayed as more of a burden he never wanted than anything else, which I think is usually the better way to handle the trope if it is clearly a single person who fits the bill. When it’s applied to a single character and they get tons of benefits/buy into it and insist on their own importance bc of it they become unlikable REAL quick.
The moment you mentioned Shoujo Basara I shed a tear, hit the like button, and subscribed. That is, for me, the most underrated Shoujo manga and I want to thank you for mentioning it to your audience. Thank you😊
"Some random Becky you found on Photobucket" omg. I won't say the title of the movie, BUT I watched a movie recently centered around a man's daughter going missing and basically... the answer was right in his face the whole time because he was chatting with a "friend" of hers on the INTERNET and their PHOTO was a STOCK. MODEL. PHOTO. Like... I can't even. The movie was actually okay though, like a 6.5 out of 10, which is still a D... but it's a D+.
OOF one of the tropes i really dislike is the "It's a tragic misunderstanding that could have been easily avoided if they just finished their sentence/let the other explain!" type thing, especially the kind that gets dragged on and on for no good reason
THE THING YOU SAID ABOUT TROPES!!! there is only like or two tropes that i don’t like because i think they’re truly problematic/harmful, but that’s SO rare. all tropes can be done well it’s up to the author!!!
A trope that I see a lot now in a lot of YA fantasy books is making the villain the love interest, giving them way more chemistry with the protagonist then having them never end up together. In the grisha trilogy, I felt as though the main character and the darkling had so much more chemistry, badly written chemistry, but alas it was still there yet at the end of the book she ends up with her best friend who we’ve met like twice and has the personality of a piece of blank paper. Also if you’ve ever read the shatter me series, the protagonist has so much more chemistry and interaction with the ‘villain’ and yet again she ends up with the Male who she has no chemistry with and has a boring overhyped personality that’s based on how strong he is. This trope just really annoys me because I always end up rooting for the villain and I want a female character who isn’t automatically an ‘innocent good girl’ who’s drawn to boring good boys. Lmao just ignore my rant, I’m just butthurt that my ships never sail.
Darkling and Alina has chemistry but it was extremely toxic, manipulative and abusive. It's a good thing that they never ended up together. Having chemistry doesn't mean you should end up with a horrible person.
I finished the first three books of the Shatter Me series and I recommend you continuing to read the second book if you haven't because Juliette ends up falling for Warner-
In the book the infernal devices, there’s this love triangle but it ends up with them being in a polygamist relationship. I thought that was interesting.
And in another of cassandra clare's books, the dark artifices, there is a polygamist relationship in a way, 2 guys and a girl and everyone loves each other
idk whether this has already been done before, but i would like a hero that should be a villain. a hero that enjoys killing his enemies a little too much. a hero that is on the good side simply because they think they would be able to kill with no consequences. a hero who isn’t putting their life in danger simply because “oh you killed my family” or “i just think it’s the right thing to do” give me a hero who does all the right things for the wrong reasons
I've been bingewatching so many videos of yours for the past few days (all while writing exams for uni rip) and I just finally wanted to comment how much I love your channel already, the vibes are immaculate
Thank you for this! WE ARE OKAY is one of my top books of 2018. I read it and fell in love with it. I agree: that cover is stunning! I loved how important found family and biological family is in the book. Damn. I’m gonna go reread it now. You’re awesome, Cindy!
i’m not even much of a reader but We Are Okay is so near and dear to my heart. i can’t even explain why but the whole atmosphere i just fell in love with.
i interpreted her books as having feminist themes (or at least trying to be that way) because she often talks about how strong her main characters are and how strong it is to be a woman. IDK if she intended it to be interpreted as a feminist book or if maybe readers have hyped it up to be that way? regardless, im glad u enjoyed her books nonetheless!
readwithcindy it’s probably a bit of both! I’m sure she wanted to portray her characters as strong women, but I don’t think that was her main goal. I would definitely say the “feminist” aspect has been hyped up too much by readers.
I read We Are Okay at the beginning of the month and I adored it so much! As you said, I hardly see anyone talk about it so thank you for bringing it up! It's a wonderful read.
I hate when characters jump to conclusions about people in their life because of a rumor or misunderstood situation they see. Then, they don't let the person explain themselves. It's a romance trope and I would prefer there be a confrontation/argument/drop in their relationship that was done more creatively. Plus, it's almost always the woman in the relationship that acts irrational.
An amazing and incredibly underrated series with racial diversity is the Legend series by Marie Lu. The 2 main characters are Mongolian (Day) and Native American (June - even though lots of people also see her as Latina). The series has both of their characters pov’s on the same situations and it’s super interesting to see the juxtaposition. Besides, I love the subtle theme of feminism in the series because Day (the guy) is just as strong and intelligent as June (the girl). I love this because most series make their male characters seem like “less” when compared to the female character and call it “female empowerment”, but in Legend, both Day and June admit that each of them have their strengths and still admire and respect each other despite their differences and they both see the other as their equal. Anyways, sorry for the long comment but I just feel the need to make this incredibly underrated series known because it’s AMAZING and deserves more recognition :)

J.K. Rowling: You like Chosen Ones and Love Triangles!
@afootineachworld it could be argued that james/lily/snape had a love triangle but even i feel that is a bit of a stretch
afootineachworld Cedric/cho/Harry maybe.
I loooove that you're an Avatar The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra fan, I hardly ever hear anyone talk about it anymore, but it was. So. Good.

how are you NOT hearing anyone talk about it anymore? It was like one of the most pivotal series of the 2000s, everyone I know loves it
The only book with love triangle trope that I loved is "The Infernal Devices"
Wooohhh this one annoyed the shit out of me 😂😂😂
I didn't like Tessa so I didn't finish the clockwork princess. She annoyed me. It was annoying that she was engaged to jem but had a thing for will
when I read it I liked it a lot because it was so creative and like she could choose both in the end but looking back it was kinda problematic that she loved both of them and it's kinda weird
sameeeee
i mean .... they could’ve had a poly relationship!
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THOSE BOOKS!!! It’s was especially disappointing after the first one had an illustrated cover. :(
Tbh they prolly just called some underpayed intern to make some cover for some book
I’m so glad the only version available for me was the one with silhouettes on the cover
Love the jobless aesthetic of this video
LOL i actually skipped work the day that i filmed this video
How is “everything hurts and I’m dying” the anthem for like nearly all women
It's because everything hurts us and we're all dying.
I agree 10000% about the real people on book covers thing!! It looks so lame to me.
yea it's a big turn off!
When I get books for Christmas, I have to specify that I want the non-movie cover (or no real people on the cover), I thought I was the only one! It's just not cute. I usually get books that I've already read, and I'd rather them have the same cover as the first copy I read
I think The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue did it well...even though the cover has a real photo it doesn't come across as cheap or lazy
Book covers with people on the front look like shitty first time fan-fiction covers made on PowerPoint
DISCLAIMER: THIS IS MY OPINION :D
I also do not like "stockphoto" book covers, but sometimes you do not have an option.
You literally made up most of this post

I asked an artist I like how much for a cover and it was a figure with 3 zeros behind it. A stock photo cover had a single zero behind it... and possibly sold better anyway.
@@taramaya4659 you asked an artist how much they charge and they replied. If they weren't going to get commission on a profit basis, it makes sense that they would charge more- what if the book sold really well? They would deserve far more money. They have bills to pay, and their work is valuable.

I strongly hated how they did relationships in legend of korra... there was no build up for anything... It was like the writers were smashing their barbies together and saying "Look how cute they are"
facts
I completely agree especially the final relationship for Korra (you know who I mean) wasn't handled the best. They shouted "bisexual Avatar!" while walking out the door.
In the beginning of the first season I could almost see Bolin and Korra happening. It was starting a slow burn I actually liked but then the writers were like, "But Mako is the older hotter brother, she has to like him!" And it all went to hell after that.
@@Labinzel Wait..... That sounds familiar.....

I'd love to hear you talk about manga more often :o
I think Harry Potter is actually a really good example of the chosen one trope done well (without major subversion), because it's made clear that Harry being the only one who can defeat Voldemort is because of special circumstances (Voldemort magically tied them together by going after him, not bc Harry is super special in other ways), and also it actually goes into how Harry feels about being "the chosen one" and how it's a lot of pressure on him. For me thats the big thing I need with tropes, is just whether the characters' responses to the situation feel realistic.
i loved basara! sarasa was a great leading character and shuri was a hottie. i havent read harry potter but i think thats a great point!
readwithcindy I know you probably get this a lot but I can’t believe you’ve never read Harry Potter! Totally ok though I understand not everyone has to read it. If you ever find yourself wanting to though I recommend the audiobooks read by Stephen fry, he does the voices pretty great
It is my favorite Shoujo manga, and my third favorite manga of all time, after Berserk and FMA!!😍
I was reading a series where each book got taller until it literally didn’t fit, and I had to move it to the bottom shelf!!! Authors👏keep👏your👏books👏the👏same👏height!!!!!!!!
HAHAHA what series is that???
I feel like John green is overhyped, his books are really fake deep to me 🤷♀️
My best friend lent me one of his John Green books and was kinda disappointed when I said, the main character sounds just way too whiny and selfpitying to me (and that was before someone died in the book).
Never even went to see the movie but him making high school characters so "mysterious" and "deep" was such a turn off for me and then the whole plot of the book was totally trashed at the end???? im still mad???
they're deep when you're like 15 lol good for his audience!!

The moment you mentioned the love square trope I knew you'll say The Grisha Trilogy 😂
i never realized how much i hated love squares until i read the grisha trilogy
readwithcindy it’s like a bipartisan system but for romance.

"I think any trope can be done well, it's just a matter of how you approach it." - Cindy
Love this way of thinking because I know I've tended to blame the trope(s) since too often I see them executed poorly (eg love triangle, bad boy is a softy all along, etc). It's not the tropes fault.

@@withcindy me every single month.
Bionic Elk I have the same problem with Cassandra Clare 😅

Harry Potter is a chosen one trope and I say it was done well there
YEEEERSSSS
It was stereotypical but I liked how it could have applied to Neville too
@@katiebirdie7868 we love for the characters to suffer. But seriously, it's nice that it could have applied to Neville too
I see that as the og chosen one😹 and lotr

THE THING YOU SAID ABOUT TROPES!!! there is only like or two tropes that i don’t like because i think they’re truly problematic/harmful, but that’s SO rare. all tropes can be done well it’s up to the author!!!
That high pony.......👏 It's adorable.
ariana grande who???
Thank you!!!!! The Darkling has much more chemistry. Same thing in the Grim Lovelies duology.
Did you finish the shatter me trilogy? Bcs she actually ends up with the "villian".
ojou sama No I’m only on the second book and kinda assumed lmao
Darkling and Alina has chemistry but it was extremely toxic, manipulative and abusive. It's a good thing that they never ended up together. Having chemistry doesn't mean you should end up with a horrible person.
I finished the first three books of the Shatter Me series and I recommend you continuing to read the second book if you haven't because Juliette ends up falling for Warner-

I love Reneé Ahdieh, but I’ve never thought of her books as particularly feminist. 🤔
i interpreted her books as having feminist themes (or at least trying to be that way) because she often talks about how strong her main characters are and how strong it is to be a woman.

I hate when characters jump to conclusions about people in their life because of a rumor or misunderstood situation they see. Then, they don't let the person explain themselves. It's a romance trope and I would prefer there be a confrontation/argument/drop in their relationship that was done more creatively.
