    This video from Sears PartsDirect shows how to troubleshoot problems with your refrigerator’s compressor. The compressor circulates refrigerant throughout the cooling system. If your refrigerator’s not cooling, the compressor could be to blame.
    Visit us at: www.searsparts...
    1. Check for power.
    Make sure the refrigerator light is on.
    2. Check the condenser fan.
    Remove the machine compartment cover.
    • If the condenser fan runs, you know the compressor also is getting power be getting power, because the compressor shares a circuit with the condenser fan motor on most refrigerators.
    • If it doesn’t run, skip to step 4.
    3. Check the PTC start relay.
    For safety, unplug the refrigerator.
    Unhook the retainer clip and pull the PTC start relay out of the refrigerator. Shake the start relay:
    • If the start relay rattles, replace the start relay.
    • If the start relay doesn't rattle, check for continuity by putting one multi-meter lead into terminal 5 and the other lead into terminal 6.
    o If you detect an open circuit between those terminals, the meter will read 1 in the far left digit. You’ll need to replace the PTC relay.
    o If the start relay's okay, you may have a defective compressor.
    4. Enter diagnostic test mode.
    If the condenser fan wasn’t running in Step 2, the refrigerator may have a defective electronic control board or a bad temperature sensor.
    Many refrigerators have a diagnostic test mode to check refrigerator operations.
    To enter diagnostic test mode on this Kenmore model, quickly press the light switch 3 times, then press and hold it a 4th time until you hear a long beep. The refrigerator is now in test mode. (If this method doesn’t work on your model, check the tech sheet for instructions. It’s either behind the bottom front grill or taped to the back of the refrigerator.)
    In test mode, press the door switch twice to start the compressor. The control beeps twice, and you should hear the compressor start. If the compressor runs in the diagnostic test mode, go to the next step.
    5. Check the thermistor.
    A bad thermistor prevents the compressor from running in normal operating mode. The diagnostic test mode forces the compressor to run whether the thermistor is broken or not. If the compressor doesn't start in the diagnostic test mode, go to the next step.
    6. Check continuity from the electronic control board through the compressor circuit.
    With the refrigerator unplugged, remove the screw that holds the control box.
    Pull the control box down and remove the electronic control board.
    Unplug the connector from the compressor circuit. Put one multimeter lead on the red wire and the other on the blue wire.
    • A reading of about 5 ohms indicates continuity in the compressor circuit which means you probably have to replace the electronic control board, because the board isn’t sending voltage through the circuit to the compressor.
    • If the meter displays a 1 in the far left digit on the meter, look for pinched or broken wires in the control board harness and on the wires leading up to the compressor. Repair or replace any broken wires that you find.
    7. Check continuity on the control board harness.
    Even if the wires look ok, check continuity in the control board harness. Unplug the wire harness and check continuity between the ceiling plug and the control board plug on the blue wire and the red wire.
    If the control board harness is ok, plug the harness back in and check continuity between the red wire at the control board plug and the red wire on the compressor plug.
    If the red wire is good, check the blue wire.
    If both wires have continuity, and the start relay wasn't the problem, have the compressor replaced.
    Or call 1-800-437-1673 to speak with a parts specialist.
    The video includes these parts. Look up your model to make sure you get the right parts for your refrigerator.

    Your comment about checking the start relay for a rattle at 0:50 was all I needed to get my refrigerator working again. The tech also mentioned making sure that the condenser fan was working properly AND to make sure the coils were properly cleaned or the start relay would be fried again in a month or two. As it turns out my coils had a lot of dust. He said that blowing them out is best since cleaning them out with a vacuum is not possible. There was no way I was going to blow that dust all over my house even wrapping the fridge with damp towels as suggested. I used an adapter on my shop-vac and a 20" section of heavy duty garden hose to vacuum out the coils. I lost a lot of food but it could have been much worse. Many thanks for helping me save about $1,200 to replace a perfectly good refrigerator that simply had a bad relay and needed a thorough cleaning!

    Greetings.
    I wanted to listen to this video to learn more about compressors. My fridge isn't like this one, it's the French door fridge with the pull out freezer. I have been told that I have a bad compressor.
    Is there a chance that it's the relay switch and or just out of freon?
    The compressor does make a clicking sound but the fan at the bottom of the fridge in the back does turn on.
    Gratitude for your time.

    interesting, I don't necessarily agree that rattling relay ALWAYS means you have bad relay. I took that starter relay apart and basically what rattles inside is a the contact assembly and a magnet/spring assembly. When the relay coil is energized with 120VAC it attracts the internal magnet to make the contact assembly mate with the relay's terminals, thereby completing the circuit to the compressor. HOWEVER , the main reason some of these relays rattle is because they need to be installed a certain way, my relay for instance has an UP indication which when placed in this orientation on the compressor has the internal contact assembly being separated from the relay terminals and does not complete the circuit to the compressor. Only after the relay coil is energized does the contact assembly close and therefore energizing the compressor. In my case, the contacts had ALOT of corrosion on them and so when the power was provided to the relay coil, the contacts would mate, but no continuity was there to tell the compressor to turn on. Only after cleaning the relay contacts did this solve my problem. At the end of the day the relay is not expensive, maybe $15 at most with shipping, but I was able to re-use my old relay with a simple cleaning as I was curious as how the internals of the elecromechanical starter relay worked. just my two cents.

    Hello. I have a Kenmore chest freezer. I bought it new and used it about 2 yrs and put it away in storage for about 8 yrs. this week, my wife and I decided to use the freezer. It was never damaged. After 2 hrs plugged in, I noticed no cooler. I checked for problems and could not locate any problems. I noticed buzz noises from the compressor and don't know if compressor bad or need recharge. What is wrong?

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the compressor buzzes for a moment and then clicks, the start relay could be defective. Unplug the refrigerator and remove the start relay as shown at :45 in the video. Replace the start relay if it rattles. If the compressor buzzes constantly, then the compressor may be defective or the refrigerant may have leaked out of the sealed system. A service technician will need to check the freezer to determine the problem because refrigerant charging and recovery is federally regulated for safety.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unplug the refrigerator and clean the condenser coils if they're dirty. Check to see if the condenser fan is running (if your model uses a condenser fan). If the condenser fan isn't running, unplug the refrigerator and check the wiring connections between the condenser fan and the control. If the wiring connections are okay, then you'll likely need to replace the condenser fan. If the compressor is getting extremely hot with the condenser fan running and the condenser coils are clean, then you may need to replace the compressor. A service technician needs to replace the compressor if it's bad because a licensed service technician should recover and recharge the refrigerant. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know (and provide the model number of your Avanti refrigerator).

    My Kenmore 4.4 mini fridge from Sears has been giving the electrical in my room issues. The power in the room its plugged into fluctuates every time the compressor turns back on. Also our power bill has skyrocketed by $60 since this issue started. Any idea what could be causing this? I have a feeling it could be the cord or the overload protector going bad.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The compressor could be drawing high current because of a damaged power cord or compressor internal mechanical problems. Unplug the refrigerator and carefully check the power cord for damage such as pinched spots or torn insulation. Replace the power cord if damaged. The overload protector isn't likely causing the problem. A bad compressor start relay could cause the symptoms that you're describing depending on your model. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know the model number of your refrigerator and additional details such as whether the refrigerator is still cooling properly.

      The measurements you give seem to be good, provided the terminal readings relate to the following pattern:
      The 11.1 reading is between the Start terminal and the Run terminal of the compressor.
      The 4.6 reading is between the Run terminal and the Common terminal.
      The 8.0 reading is between the Start terminal and the Common terminal.
      Typically, the Common terminal is on the top of the three terminals, the Run terminal is on the right side and the Start terminal is on the left side.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the compressor is locked up or damaged and won’t work, it typically needs to be replaced. If your refrigerator is less than 5 years old, check the owner’s manual for warranty coverage on the compressor. Here’s a link for a web page where you may be able to find an online copy of your owner’s manual if needed: www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals. Some refrigerators have a 5-year warranty on the compressor and sealed system. If the compressor is still under warranty, call the manufacturer for warranty repair. If the compressor isn’t covered by a warranty, then you’ll need to have a service technician replace the compressor because the repair requires the recovery and recharge of the refrigerant. That task should only be completed by a service technician licensed to handle refrigerant.

      I'm troubleshooting my fridge. Apparently I have a sealed system leak which causes the fridge to run more. I have ice build up above the evaporator coils in the back of the freezer. So I know i have a leak somewhere. For you could be a circuit board issue or a small freon leak from your copper pipe lines. Freon leak sensor or spray copper pipes with soap and water to see if there are any bubbles coming from your pipes.

      The prices of compressors used in Kenmore refrigerators varies by model. You can look up the price of the compressor for your model by keying the model number into the search bar on this page and finding the compressor on the parts diagram: www.searspartsdirect.com/ . Compressors typically need to be replaced by a service technician who is licensed to recover and recharge the refrigerant in the sealed system of the refrigerator. A compressor usually costs about $200 and a service call to have the compressor installed typically cost around another $200. Service costs vary depending on your area. You can schedule service here if needed: www.searshomeservices.com/repair . We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know.

      You'll likely need to have a service technician diagnose and repair the refrigerator. The compressor motor is likely drawing high amperage when is causing the overload on the compressor to shut off power going to the compressor motor. A service technician will likely be required for the repair because replacing the compressor involves the recovery and recharge of the refrigerant in the sealed system. Only a service technician is allowed to handle that refrigerant.

    What does PTC stand for?

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      PTC stands for positive temperature coefficient. Those initials are typically used to describe a compressor start relay in a refrigerator. A PTC start relay sends current to start windings or a capacitor during compressor startup. A positive temperature coefficient resistor inside the PTC relay shuts off current to the start windings or capacitor when the compressor starts running and the thermistor inside the start relay heats up. We hope this answers your question. If you need more assistance, let us know.

      Good afternoon got it figured out seem like not enough flushing agent was used so I repeat the process, I've combine lacquer thinner and 141b this time gave it a good shot and nitrogen it for 150psi on both ends got all the brownish element out, recharge the system and works fine since last night, thanks for the quick reply..

      It's quite rare to have to do a flush. Generally only when a dramatic event like a burn-out occurs. Keep in mind, home-made flushes can destroy the insulation on the compressor's windings- BE CAREFUL. Always change the filter a couple times after doing a flush as the refrigerant will continue to rinse the remaining sediment and contaminants into the filter. The problem you originally described was either water or solvent that you didn't properly remove by purging with nitrogen or by use of an extensive Vacuuming process. and was freezing up at the end of the cap tube.

    • @midwestheating4289
      @midwestheating4289 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I shouldn't vacuum for long period?, my understanding was the longer you vacuum the more sediment remove Yes I'm planning to replace filter again, thanks.

      And I forgot to mention locked rotor compressor was replaced because of my impatience charging using only gauge no scale, it vapor lock overnight had my buddy cut open the old comp and winding was in good shape, ref was bought used and had prior repairs in the condensing coil part that submerged in water was rusted out and replaced with copper, so I figure must have sucked water and unit died on me.

    • @dreamingrightnow1174

      It's the liquid that is in the copper pipes. It holds cold better than water and creates cold air in the fridge. That's my simplistic answer, lol. It's terrible stuff for the environment and requires special handling I think.

      Your symptoms point to a failed compressor because the compressor housing is getting extremely hot. We recommend that you contact the place where you bought the refrigerator to see if the seller can help you get the compressor repaired. Compressors on some refrigerators have a 5-year warranty. Refer to the refrigerator’s use & care guide for warranty provisions on your model.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should hear the compressor buzzing when it's running and you'll typically feel the compressor vibrating slightly. If the compressor is completely still, silent and hot, it may be locked up and/or the overload may have shut the compressor off. If the compressor is running and working, the freezer should be cooling if the sealed system has refrigerant. We hope this additional information helps. If you need further assistance, send us additional details about the refrigerator problems you're seeing and let us know the model number of your refrigerator.

      Sears PartsDirect my model number is WRT318FZDM02. I am not home currently but I can tell you there is no way it’s those temps in there. The refrigerator has been freezing food/drinks in the refrigerator portion. This is what led me to begin troubleshooting. The current settings are both set to recommended as per the manual.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lukerhoads248 To enter the diagnostics mode, set the refrigerator to the minimum temperature setting (first LED on the control panel on). Press and hold the Settings switch and the door switch for 5 seconds then release both buttons when all LED's on the control panel light up. Wait 10 seconds and the LED's will turn off. Press the Settings switch 8 times to cycle through all component tests in the diagnostic mode. If errors are detected, LED's will flash on the control panel. If no errors are detected the control panel and refrigerator will return to normal operation. If the first LED flashes, the electronic control board failed. If the second LED flashes, the refrigerator temperature sensor failed. If the 3rd LED flashes, the defrost sensor failed. If multiple LED's flash, more than one failure occurred. Unplug the refrigerator to exit diagnostic mode if error codes displayed. An error code can point you in the direction of a failure. Be sure that you unplug the refrigerator before accessing internal components. If the control displays no error codes, you'll likely need to replace the electronic control board because the control board isn't cycling the compressor on and off properly. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know.

    LG linear inverter refrigerator compressor keeps tripping every 5 minutes, what could be the problem and possible solution

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unplug the refrigerator (if it isn't already unplugged). You'll need to leave it unplugged because the compressor isn't running for more than 5 minutes. Check the wire harness connections between the inverter control board and the compressor. Reconnect any loose wires and repair any broken wires. This could fix the problem that you're describing. If you find that wiring intact, check the wiring between the main electronic control board and the inverter control board. Reconnect any loose wires and repair any broken wires. If that wiring is intact, then a bad compressor, failed inverter control board or faulty main electronic control board could be causing this failure. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, give us additional details about the problem and post the model number of your LG refrigerator.

      Unplug the refrigerator for 1 minute to reset the control boards and then plug the refrigerator back in. If the compressor doesn’t start after resetting the control boards, then the main control board (www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/WR55X10171/0046/363.html) or user interface board (www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/WR55X10390/0046/363.html) may be bad. Unplug the refrigerator and check for burn marks on the main control board. Replace the main control board if you see burnt spots. If find no burn marks on the main control board, we recommend that you have a service technician diagnose and repair the refrigerator because we didn't find any DIY diagnostics that might help you determine which control board may be causing the failure. Check the house circuit breaker for the refrigerator’s electrical outlet. Reset the circuit breaker if it’s tripped. That may restore power to the refrigerator.
      If the house circuit breaker is okay, plug a small appliance into the refrigerator’s outlet to make sure the electrical outlet works. Have an electrician repair the electrical outlet if it’s broken.
      The plug of the power cord may be preventing the refrigerator from getting power. Unplug the power cord and check the wiring connections on the power cord plug. Reconnect any loose wires. Replace the power cord if it’s damaged.

      It is unusual for the compressor on that Kenmore refrigerator to be loud. Unplug the refrigerator and tighten any loose compressor mounting bolts. If that doesn’t help, the compressor might have internal mechanical problems. It could be a few weeks or months before the compressor gives out and the refrigerator stops cooling. When it does, a service technician has to replace the compressor, because the replacement involves involves the recovery and recharge of refrigerant. • @searspartsdirect

      If the evaporator fan inside the freezer is noisy, the evaporator fan blades may be hitting frost or ice buildup. You may be able to quell that type of noise by unplugging the refrigerator for 8 hours to allow frost build-up around the evaporator fan to melt. If that fixes the problem but the noise returns after several days, then you’ll need to troubleshoot the defrost system as shown in this article/video: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/troubleshooting-defrost-system-problems-in-refrigerators.html If the compressor is making a loud noise, it will likely need to be replaced. Unfortunately, you’ll need to get a service technician’s help to replace a compressor, because that repair involves recovering Freon. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know more details about the refrigerator problems and give us the model number of your refrigerator.
