  • You won't believe where it was found! The 1931 Frankenstein makeup reference head and prop hands, some of the only surviving pieces of 1931 Frankenstein history from the studio of Jack Pierce, James Whale & Universal Studios' go to monster maker, who created the Iconic look of Boris Karloff's Frankenstein's Monster, as seen in the ORIGINAL film, using this head as reference! Seen in old photos but presumed lost to time forever, it was rediscovered by one crazy Punk Rocker in an unusual way... let's just say it was a good thing Grandma's favorite movie was Frankenstein! Come meet Tattoo Rob from Funeral Classics in Fountain Valley, CA where if you're lucky, you might just see a piece of EXTREMELY RARE forgotten Horror Movie history, the grandaddy of all Movie Monsters, FRANKENSTEIN's prop/reference head!

This video's location, Funeral Collections, in Huntington Beach, CA, is SUPERB, as is it's owner, Tattoo Rob!!! What a fabulous story of his childhood, his family influences, resulting in his ever so inundated fascination n subsequent career n business that he created and, at 55 yrs old, it is sooo cool to see someone who STILL looks as punk rock crazy cool as he did throughout his earlier life!!! From the top of his exquisitely spiked blonde head, the lean black clad silhouette, the bejeweled hands and neck, and fabulous platform shoes, he is exactly like all the people I had grown up with from the Glam days of the 1970's through the exciting heavy metal/punk rock scenes of the 1980's n 1990's, he remains an icon of cool that we purveyed at all times in public, when we were all considered weirdos by society!!! It's great to see in this day and age of the sloppy, mismatched preppy style that has managed to become the norm of today's society!! I myself am 66 yrs old n I was a ln entertainer in all facets, singing, dancing, performing, burlesque, theatre n heavy metal/ punk rock front person n to this day, I have kept my style n persona in that style n era, because it IS ME totally, so contrary to peoples opinion that as I aged I should grow up n change to the now!!! It is great to see others like me!! Of course, my favourite blogger, Justin Scarred, would be the one to hip me to this wonderful existence of such a REALLY cool place and the awesome looking and sounding Tattoo Rob!!! Thanks ever so, Justin Scarred!!! Hey to Allie, too.

it's so shocking that something so old can still be held and felt by people today! props to the people who kept it so pristine for all this time.

So the head was originally created by American Sculptress Katherine Stubergh (later Stubergh-Keller) as a reference for Jack Pierce's original make-up design for the FRANKENSTEIN. Now, on the issue of Miss. Stubergh (who's mother's name was also "Katherine Stubergh") the family came out to California to be Mannequin and store display manufactures. They never were associated with Madame Tussaud's of London, but in the 1950s and 1960s made wax figures for business associated with Madame Tussaud's Great-Great Grandson LOUIS TUSSAUD. The Stubergh's went on to build the (very short lived) Hollywood Motion Picture Hall of Fame, made figures for the Vincent Price classic HOUSE OF WAX, built wax museums in Canada, South Dakota, Hawaii, California, Washington, Texas, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Indiana, Denmark and France and you can still find copies of her famous recreation of Da Vinci's THE LAST SUPPER recreated in wax at a few places around the world. As for this Frankenhead, there is another copy of this head that belonged to Katherine Stubergh herself that ended up in the collection of Katherine's prodigy HENRY ALVAREZ and was auctioned off with dozens of other rare movie pieces (my favorite was the Charlie Chaplin bust she made for THE GREAT DICTATOR) not long after Henry passed away a few years back and is now SOMEWHERE in a private collection (google "STUBERGH FRANKENSTEIN" to see the Heritage Auction from 2014). I am thrilled to see that another one is in such a loving home being shared with people. I got to hold the known head when I was a kid and visited Henry Alvarez's studio and it's so cool to see you experience your own memorable moment holding this one!!

i saw him the other day at the castle haunted house in huntington beach!
i'd be surprised if you haven't, but if you haven't been there, you might get a kick out of it, it would be cool to see a video from there as well.
sadly the original owner passed away just this year so its hard to say if it will continue after this year, his sisters kept it going for the time being.

Actually, that's Exactly what I was thinking while I was watching this, was that I'd bet the Smithsonian in D.C., or if there's an official movie history museum anywhere here in the U.S., or a museum specific to Universal movie history & memorabilia, They might be Very Interested in obtaining those items back, because clearly he has the authentifications to back the pieces up with.
