    Thanks for your very informative explanation of the DOD issue. I have a VF ute series 1 6.0L L77 engine that had the DOD disabled but still inside the engine. Had an exhaust lifter failure with the indicitave tick tick sound. Investigated and found one of the DOD lifters had failed and collapsed. Luckily no other damage but with a W407 upgrade with new cam, all should be ok. Car was already fitted with a w375 package but still cost me 7.5k to fix the issue with new valley plate, headers shimmed etc. Wow a big cost for a small lifter issue that should have been addressed by Holden at the time. Plus is I now have a 750HP new package. Love you channel, thanks again for the insight.

    so yeah even if you aren’t sure, do the lifters. otherwise you’ll be forced (like me) to get a new cam, pistons, rings, bearings, heads … and lifters :D

      Amazing how Holden just continued making dumb mistakes through their life. Almost like they did it on purpose to create work for mechanics. Faulty V6's with plastic LIM's on earlier ones and stretched timing chains on later models. Not sure why Holden is not paying to repair all this.

    Awesome video,ive got a 2011 ve ss with afm,got it new i change oil every 7k now and i drive it normal i dont flog it,its done 225000kms should I be worried or considering the frequent oil changes and the way i drive it i can get another 50-100k out of my lifters,they don't make any noise no rattling

    Also seen US Holden Caprice police cars running the AFM system for over 200,000 miles due to correct oil changes and regular oil flush systems and most of the time the cars are sitting doing 100's of hours just sitting at 700 revs and not doing hi speeds, or hi rev's/ oil pressures are the issue and not the lifters, sometimes they do but mostly at ideal and no problems if you want to make HP different thing then, but again must do it right and with people that know what they are doing when it comes to DOD deleting systems and products used and other aspects of L77/L98 GM engines?

  • @michaeljeffery9898
    @michaeljeffery9898 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Lucky the L98 didn't have any pf that AFM crap installed . although the standard lifters always go in them

    • @ClunieGarage
      @ClunieGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too right Michael! We dodged a bullet with the build date on the VE as it came with the L98. Lifters are still a weak point in them but they are the standard roller items and not the design debacle we showed on the video as per the L77!

    I have two of those signs… I thought the engine mounts were done. 220,000. Lifters hav always ticked when cold, they were replaced under warranty when new

    hey clunie im pretty confident of getting the lifters, DOD plate, cam and valve springs replaced but. Who can de-activate the afm and adjust the tune. Previously having afm the oil pump is already high volume from factory why would you need to change it?

    • @aaronnoyb
      @aaronnoyb ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you're building a loose tolerance LS for high rpm race work, you don't want a high volume oil pump.
      There's a pressure relief valve in the sump, that just sprays the oil all over the crank, to keep the pressure in check. Three problems with that, your fuel is providing the energy to pump that oil for no benefit, when you're pushing the motor, some of that oil will get past the oil rings, especially on compression braking and finally the increased oil mist in the crankcase, makes your PCV system work harder, potentially fouling up your intake.

    • @ClunieGarage
      @ClunieGarage  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello mate, any reputable tune shop should be able to de-activate the AFM software and adjust the tune. Our tuner uses HP tuners. Let me know if you get stuck.

    I am from America, so we have the G8 version, but same car. So I bought a g8 a bit ago, and the guy said it’s supposed to have the DOD delete, and an LS9 cam. May seem like a dumb question but it possible to know if it actually has the cam and dod delete without busting the motor open? Mine doesn’t do any of the things you described, (it’s NA) but I don’t really know if the guy did what he said, and I’ve never driven a stock one before. It’s an L76 6.0L and I have plans to boost it in the future, and am being my research. Any advice would be appreciated, and great video nevertheless!

    Hey guys, I'm a little late to this video but just hoping for some advice.
    I have a VE SS with AFM and just like you mentioned towards end of video, it rattles at low rpm when it's in 4 cyl mode and the occasional tick at idle. How far gone is it and am I in trouble? Or do I go do an AFM delete asap?
    Much appreciated

      Tune out your AFM and put a little of the thick oil additive in for one oil change. I still have the shitty dod lifters and was having that problem so i tuned it out and put in the thicker additive and it helped for now. It still ticks on startup sometimes but goes away after it idles for a minute

    • @naysay5812
      @naysay5812 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bless-edisYeshuaHamashiach I had to get rid of it because it was starting to become drama after drama on top of the lifter issue. I did put a thicker oil in it but didn't delete afm, not sure how much better that made it because it would still tick for a couple minutes on cold start. I think safe bets that majority afm models would have the same dramas. I think that's my first and last afm. Thanks for your reply though

  • @CurtisLSA

    • @ClunieGarage
      @ClunieGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @amounifnd
      @amounifnd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GM and particularly Holden always found non creative ways to meeting emission controls etc. Like those PCV valve systems many models ran to gunk the intake in oil.

    • @ClunieGarage

      G'day James, well worth doing as the AFM software may be disabled but its the hardware of the lifters that is the key issue. Lots of performance shops will be able to fix for you. Get a cam at the same time and do a job of it!

    Hey guys - I friggin hope you are still there. I am 65 and about to embark on my dream - to make a replica 70's Sandman Panel Van. Problem is the van I have chosen is a 2010 VE (one old owner) with 134,000k's L77. The one and only mechanic to ever work on this car made this comment -
    "Previous notes carried forward.
    -Crankshaft making noise (squeak noise) known problem
    Lifters or possibly camshaft
    -Serv light not on."
    Is this valid?
    Should I be expecting big bucks in the future if lifters etc are screwed. Please help. Appreciate it.
