Thanx dude! Super freaking helpful. I change my cotton from time to time but not as much as I should. It really makes sense that when it lasts 4-5 days when it lasted longer before. I recently bought a new zippo, a month ago lol and now I am changing its cotton as a new genuine zippo only lasts about 5 days. I only checked now what I should have checked the day I bought it that the cotton feels super old. Channing it now and making a point to change it more often as it does not take a lot of time and it doesn't cost much so I will be making a point of regularly changing the cotton. I use mine all the time as well.

I noticed new zippos tend to have the balls packed too tight. The felt pad sits recessed in the insert. The wick is also almost never in the S shape they recommend. Just rewick with the stuff that's already in there. Loosen the balls a little and snaking the wick properly greatly improved the capacity. The felt should be about level with the bottom of the insert. If it sits too low you packed it too much. If it sits too high just push it down till it's level.

This is what I was looking for. I got my "Vintage" Zippo from a smoke shop and the wick routing and packing was awful. More than 20% of the wick was not touching the rayon, pushed up against the casing. I'm going to follow your steps to fix it. I'm also going to switch to cotton because it's easier to get for me.

There’s a certain brand of Japanese cotton makeup pads you can use. I used them for wicks in vapes and they were damned good. Not as quick or full an absorbency of rayon (like zippo uses), but it was pretty decent.

a few sort of issues ive had are sometimes when i strike the lighter theres a sort of mini fire explosion as if there was gas around the wick that was ignited instead of lighting the wick which i presume is because of having abit too much fuel, sometimes for a period of time being impossible to ignite when there is definatly plenty of fuel in and then shortly after ignighting perfectlywhich i guess could be because of how its been sitting and possibly making it so that the fuel has gone away from the wick and only after some time of it being held the right way up the fuel manages to go back the wick.

I know that the hole in the pad is to store a spare flint. I tried that trick. Didn't work for me. Almost every time I pulled the insert to fill, the flint would fall out and be lost. So I always put a spare flint or two under the pad. Now I never lose a spare flint.

Result: it lights up perfectly. I don't know if the metal core will resist the heat, but for now it works very well, and the pipe cleaner remains white. I did this experiment with an old clone, because I don't experiment with my beloved, original zippos.

Because in the zippo factory, they don't put the wick in the S position. I don't think it takes a lot of economic effort to put a wick in the right position.
