I've found a stack of the felt pads, if you can get them that is Zippo does not sell them, is a really nice replacement for the "balls". I can't be certain but it does, at least, seem to last longer.
Can't help wondering how much the density of the absorbent material means. How tightly or loosely packed it is. I would think you would want that goldilocks density of just enough to keep fluid from leaking when completely saturated. After all cotton bacon or rayon it is taking up space that fluid could occupy.
That's the double edged sword of using a material with better wicking properties. It'll transfer fluid to the wick much better, but that will cause you to have to refill the lighter more often.
I just run the wick straight down and cut it. The only time they wear is when you light an empty zippo. If you keep it fueled the wick lasts a ridiculous amount of time. If it does I’ll just use the other half I trimmed off. 😎
Thinking...2 parts...1 isn't cotton more absorbent than rayon ? 2 how about standard cotton balls from a pill bottle instead of some gimmicky product ?
Checking into this thanks to seeing your other video. Since I quit smoking thanks to the useless clove ban, daily carry of a Zippo seemed wasteful. But for EDC and camping I adopted the EXOTAC TitanLight. Solves the evaporate in 4 days problem. A more absorbent medium helps, and Zippo fluid is $80 a gallon now .My grandfather carried a Zippo all my life and I have a...few.😂 ...a new Zippo holds 90 drops straight from the can, compared to the TitanLight, that holds about 3 ml.
Hello , i would like to ask about somthing , i changed my cotton in my lighter lately , when i smoke a cigaret it taste like the fuel ! And it also make me feel like my lungs is burning and make me always cough ! Before i changed the cotton. the old and dry one i couldn't experience non of that , but the fuel evaporates fast like in three days or something and the wick was like dry too , after i changed the cotton , The fuel lasts longer but like i said burning my lungs and cough , so what could be the problem cause i already stoped using it till i find a solution , what could it be ?
I use rayon, works great. For longer run times i use zippo feul canister, works great. Sometimes the guys behind the engineering of a product know what their doing 😊
Less talk and fumbling, more editing. The subject is: Packing a Zippo lighter with absorbent material. Now, evidently rayon fiber is recommended. Is just regular cotton balls deadly?
@@HorsepowerHeaven Try switching from lighter fluid to 99% Isopropanol. I did that years ago, and you get a great flame with no taste or smell. Another good thing is that, if your skin is sensitive to naphtha burns, you won't have to worry about burns or rashes when using Isopropanol. The only downside, and I must warn you, is that sadly Isopropanol seems to evaporate much quicker than standard lighter fluid meaning you may have to refill it more frequently than when using regular lighter fluid. However, I find all of the upsides of using Isopropanol to far outweigh the downside of having to refill more often.
You read that the Cotton Bacon claims to absorbs 30 some % faster not more. Then throughout your video, you mention that you desire to see if absorbs more fluid???
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors dude. you literally said at the end of your video that you didn't come up with it and a subscriber gave you the idea. Let's all just appreciate sharing knowledge and zippos.
Zippos are all flash, no function, maintenance required, (unnecessary headache). If you want functionality, no maintenance & are not concerned with flash, Bic lighter wins 10 times out of 10.
Used to think the same thing, but turns out Butane lighter don't work when it's too cold, cant keep the flame open or use it like a candle, and creates a more consitant flame without burning your fingertips if using it for too long. Nothing wrong a bit of flash aswell though.
Simpler is more robust. Zippos can use a wide range of liquid fuels. Even a refillable butane lighter can only use 1 kind of fuel. You have to understand how it works.
I agree, but if you still want the touch of a liquid fueled lighter try IMCO brand. I have the 6700 model. Except they are made beautiful, the fuel vapor is practically close to zero.

Been following your instructions and my 58 year old zippo is working great! Thanks for your help 😊
I just wrap a little plumber's thread seal tape around the insert after filling. Takes a few seconds and keeps the Zippo full significantly longer
I do the same thing. Works a treat!
Great Video!!!
Japanese organic cotton pads also work well on zippos .
cool i was wondering that to myself thanks lots
You had me at BACON!
its just expensive cotton that comes in strips not balls. way better than cotton balls from the local grocery store.
im allergic to cotton from grocery stores.

I did this a while back and the fuel started evaporating within a day or 2 no matter how I packed it and made sure the wick wasn’t kinked

It’s $5 at my local vape shop for a bag of cotton bacon
any update on this or other cottons?

Long staple cotton is a different animal than short. Look in to it. Yep, learn you good about the money maker in the industry.
@@greggc.touftree5936 I do believe that is incorrectl all cotton comes from the same type of animal. Long or short just depends on the season.

What's happening is that the new cotton is holding much more fuel than your old cotton. Thus, more fuel is being transferred through the wick.

I’d be curious to see how regular cotton balls perform vs cotton bacon. I suspect that the difference is negligible.
I'd say it depends on the quality and how tightly you pack it
