    Riding the 2021 9.8xt. Had it about a month. Prior bike was a 2016 Ex 7. Compared to the old bike, this descends like a demon. The stability on rough steep stuff is eye popping. The whole thing is so stiff in a good way. The climbing "feels" a bit harder, but I just did a 3 mile, 1300 ft road climb faster than on my old bike, even with its upright geometry. The only issue I have is pedal strikes in the low setting, but I'll take that for all the other magic this bike brings to the table. Love it!

    I have been riding a 9.9 for the last few years. 130/130 travel, but is a really nice handling bike in most any situation I have encountered, from Moab to the Tetons. Everything just continues to work with no issues and the slightly upgraded components may help there. Nice review.

      Same here. I’ve got a 2018 9.9. Solid bike, but I did blow the rear shock beyond repair. I have a CaneCreek coil shock now, and it’s amazing. Made the bike, feel so much more capable. Just a little heavier

  • @zionite24
    @zionite24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Swap that DPS for a DPX2 and believe me that bike will transfer into a beast climbing and descending. I just did that swap and its night and day difference. Its not a cheap upgrade but one of the best you can do to a Fuel.

    • @Gee-1979
      @Gee-1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Me too. I put a Fox Factory DPS2 on my 2020 Fuel EX 8 a few months back. The performance and comfort descending is next level now. The original rear shock was a little harsh to be honest. The DPS2 is super plush yet supportive.

    I'm demoing one today in the Chicago area. Had to put a $500 refundable deposit just to have them build it up to demo and wait 4 days, you think with the national backlog of decent trail bikes they would have this prominently displayed in the showroom. Having yet ridden it I have my reservations with a couple of lower-end components such as the wheelset, fork, dropper, and brakes. I currently have a '15 Fuel that is heavily upgraded and dialed in, I know this is a completely different bike geo wise but not sure I want to get upgraditis again, coming from Fox Factory suspension could be a serious letdown. Is 2023 bringing a refresh with a threaded bottom bracket? I doubt the geo and components will change much. I rode the Ibis Ripley SLX this summer in Colorado and want one so badly, but as we all know they cannot be found and it's has 3 years on it since the last design. Update: I purchased the Fuel EX 9.7 and it's sweet but Trek releases the Top Fuel as a DC bike with threaded BB, can't win for losing! Although I think it will be a long wait for those to hit the streets.

    Can anyone compare the sensitivity or suppleness of the rear suspension to a Stumpjumper? I ride slow and I'm looking for something that is small bump compliant and smooths out the little stuff. A local shop actually has one of these in stock!

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went from a 2020 Fuel Ex to a 2021 Stumpjumper. The Stumpy is more plush/active than the Fuel EX. The Fuel EX has better reaction to pedaling inputs and thus feels a little more responsive. Hope that helps understand the two when talking small bump compliance

    • @philrc1

      @@Jamesthebikeguy Thanx for that info, that's just what I was looking for. I rented a Stumpjumper in Az for a week and I could tell it was WAY more supple then my Santa Cruz, and it made the ride much more enjoyable for me and the way that I ride. The problem is that I just can't find a Stumpy in the color and spec that I want, within 700 miles (LOL), so I have looking for alternatives. I guess I'll just be vigilant and keep watching for one to come in stock locally.

    Really like the bike but would probably skip this year (like you could even buy one, ha) and hopefully next year they'll have a new frame. New Top Fuel this year has frame storage in AL, Knock Block 2.0, threaded BB, 34.9mm seat post (170mm drop size L), and slightly better geo. I'd assume similar changes to the EX next year, maybe 140mm travel.

    • @chrisgravel7157
      @chrisgravel7157 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree 100% looking at what Trek did with the Top Fuel I am disappointed the Fuel EX didnt get updated as well touch slacker, Float X 10mm more travel, 34.9 post etc. I suspect that is next year. The Remedy if it stays also needs a refresh - storage, slacker, longer etc. Hope you enjoy the top fuel I'd love to have one for my more XC rides but in North Vancouver its just not enough bike for everyday, Fuel Ex is almost their Slash overkill for many.

      i had a 2021 ex8 and its actually the main pivot that creaks - other people i know with fuel ex also had main pivot creak. it really sucks because you cant effectively lube it because of how tight it is but its just loose enough to creak, was a deal breaker for me so i sold it because of how annoying the loud constant creaking was

    The rapid drive hub is awesome when its new, but every single person I know that's ran these wheels has stripped the hub shell threads for the ratchet ring, which means you need to replace the whole hub. Furthermore about 80% of people I know with these wheels has bashed them and dented them really easily compared to other wheels.

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an interesting sample group. I've seen well over a thousand of these hubs go home and a handful have issues. Personally I have these hubs on three of my bikes, one set of wheels has over a thousand mountain bike miles. I'm a pretty heavy set person too and not an issue yet.
