3 cups flour, baking powder, 70g ice cold butter (grated), mix with knife. Add Dried fruit (raisins), add cup buttermilk- mix with knife. Add another half cup buttermilk. Crank up oven 200 degrees. Add flour to working top- pet the dough softly. Get a tray and with sharp knife make cuts to dough and place on the tray. Don't worry if it's too wet. Don't measure too much. If you're nervous than add some flour.

I’m close to 80 and from Taiwan. Tonight after watching your way of making scones,
I couldn’t help but try my hands on it. I followed you closely especially your joyful spirit .
Believe it or not, the result was wonderfully successful. This is the first time I bake with
A relaxed and joyful mood. Thank you very much for your joyful spirit!

I just did 3 different recipes including yours. One recipe with added egg and another with lemonade minus butter. Annabelle's recipe turned out the best and the way I've always liked scones - tasty, light, fluffy, moist. I think the grated butter which doesn't incorporate too well is the secret. Thanks so much, Annabelle. This recipe is for keep.

I made these and they worked out perfectly! Hooray no more rock buns for scones! Thanks Annabelle. I used half buttermilk and half ordinary milk (2% fat) because I’m not crazy about the tart taste of buttermilk. But you need to use some buttermilk or you won’t get the wonderful rise. I also added 2 tablespoons of sugar along with the flour just to have a touch of sweet. I sprinkled a wee bit of sugar on top of each before baking. Used a 425 F oven. The were baked in 13 minutes. Otherwise I made them exactly as shown. Used a knife to mix and I froze the butter ahead of grating. That’s 1/3 cup of butter for us North Americans.

Just baked a batch of these with 1 cup of yoghurt as I don’t have buttermilk on hand, also 1/2 cup of milk with a good squeeze of lemon. They look awesome. Thanks Annabelle, you’ve saved my scone heartaches and now I love baking scones!

I love Annabelle's way of avoiding the classic mistake of over-handling the dough - by just chopping it up she doesn't end up with extra that she then has to mix together. I also like the no-sugar thing - I always thought scones didn't have it - and the fact that she doesn't fuss about brushing the tops with milk or egg or both but just lets them brown by themselves. My scones have always turned out flat, they never rise, but by golly I think they will when I make these. Annabelle, you're a treat! Thanks heaps.

I watched this during lockdown. I hate baking, because I have always failed at it, but I missed my scones and decided to give it a go! I can tell you this recipe is fail proof. Instead of adding dried fruit, I added fetta cheese, cheddar and olives and then I diversified with other fillings like mushroom , capsicum ..etc. So far, I have literally done no less than ten batches and I am loving it! Thank you very much Annabelle, for the happiness and laughs and smiles that I had from my children eating this. God bless!

This is the best recipe I have seen and there are loads of them around. I could never understand the fussing around with a round cutter and then being left with bits of dough that is discarded. What a waste! This is awesome and I like the idea of buttermilk. I make them similarly, just cut them into squares but buttermilk will add that extra touch. Apart from that, the cook is fun to watch!

Oh blimey, what a star. Now being a Pomme I feel duty bound to praise Mary Berry. I've followed her recipes for years. But wow, this cook is just a joy to watch. Plus, I've never seen scones made so easily and cleanly. It's how I remember my mother used to make them, with just a bowl, a cup and a knife. No food mixer or scone cutters, just her experienced eye. They were perfect every time.

My wifes scones flop and never seems to get it right. I work from home so I thought why not look for a scone recipe and I ended up here. Oven on, prepped ingredients (did not have any butter milk) so used ordinary full cream milk) placed in oven, took a few mins longer on 220fan. Watched till golden brown, cooled, jam out, cream whisked. Prepare scones (made 16 of them). Recipe 100% . Taste could be a little sweeter but no complaints on the ingredients (maybe the buttermilk makes the difference) I am now stuffed on just 4 of them ha ha ha. Top class Annabelle. And the only scone maker in the house Drat should have kept my mouth shut.

OMG!!!!! Hello from America. I can't make bread at all; I failed (past tense) miserably at my one attempt at scones, then I watched this video. OMG !!! This is my 3rd batch, and I changed it up a bit. I didn't use as much buttermilk, because for me it left that tangy flavor -- so, I mixed it half and half with regular whole milk. I also sifted the flour, which might not be necessary, but it's what I did. I also used a pastry blender instead of a knife. I tried the just glop it on the baking sheet for first two tries, but on this one, I gently patted it and formed a rectangle kind of, and used a metal bench scraper and cut them into triangles. The first batch were just plain, the second with fresh blueberries (I didn't have a lemon, but if I had, I would have put in some juice and zest) -- this batch I used cinnamon raisin -- I also used all purpose flour and a little self raising, and added two teaspoons of baking powder and one of baking soda. They are delicious. Oh, this time around I used a really hot oven -- 450 F fan, and when I turned them, I blotted the top with melted butter. So much for my NY's resolution to lose weight !!! Thank you so much for posting. They are divine -- Cheers -- Patricia

AMAZING!! I live in Thailand, where if you are lucky, you find the odd scone. Most are very average. Finding the buttermilk was also a challenge, but certainly worth the effort. I formed the dough into a circle and cut into wedges, atop of baking paper and leaving in a circle to keep moist. Mine took 20 mins to cook because of the inconsistent electric supply level. Absolutely delicious. Thank you Annabelle

If you don't have buttermilk just take 1cup milk and add 1TBSP vinegar or lemon juice and let it sit 5 mins while you get the flour and butter ready. PS this works with GF AP flour...add 3 tsp baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda if it is not self raising flour. Can add 1 c grated cheese instead of fruit for savoury flavour.

Donielle Stenson just because you don't appreciate some foods, it doesn't mean it's disgusting. I'm pretty sure there are things you enjoy eating, but I don't. I don't judge that you're eating disgusting food.

I love spinach and feta! My 14 yr old boy’s fave actually! Can you share your recipe to me please?;)

good grief - you pop along to any good cafe downtown Wellington and you'll likely find spinach and feta scones on the menu - they're delicious.

Tried this recipe on the weekend with a twist.. I added grated Parmesan cheese and oregano. Best scones recipe I've ever made.
If you like your scones, this recipe is the one for you.

These are great. Finally! Scones that aren’t hard and dry! I add currants and 1 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp baking soda. Never seen self rising flour where I live in Canada. Thanks Anabelle!

I love her, so exciting, my grandma used to put her scone mix on tray the same way, fantastic to see someone else do the same.
